Chapter 1688: A Feral Savior (5)
Chapter 1688: A Feral Savior (5)
“Five…”
Rex rushed to the next target like a beast that managed to escape its cage.
Below, more black pillars blasted with force.
He made a front flip to dodge the coiling tendrils of goo, successfully avoiding the tendrils of goo or being impaled once again. As he did that, danger came from above as he quickly twisted his body mid-air, dodging five black pillars descending from above.
In the rush of the moment, he was smiling.
Not because this situation was any good for them, but because he knew he could save these nobles.
Rex sprinted on all four along the length of the thicker black pillar, watching the situation down below as he noticed the groups that April and Ethan were leading. Both of them were heading to two nobles, so that means there are five left who need saving.
Pivoting hard, Rex slammed a foot down to halt his momentum before snapping into a sharp turn.
He shot straight at the noble on the opposite side and cut the Immortal Slugs’ main body.
Ignoring the noble’s gaze, he shoved the nasty flesh into his mouth.

“Sensational! Absolutely sensational!” Rex laughed, black substance oozing out of his mouth.
Splash!
Multiple black pillars tackled him from the side and drilled holes into his body.
Rex was pushed back a couple of steps, coughing blood from his mouth, but he stopped the momentum with another stomp. Grinning savagely like an animal, he cut the black pillars and gulped down every single severed black pillar.
In an instant, his fresh wounds were healed like they were never there.
Pain spread across his entire body as veins bulged, amplified by the Gradual Penalty, but that only made his muscles swell in size and his aura climb higher. His anger rises hand-in-hand with the pain, and this battle of attrition shows no end to the battle.
“Every time you hit me, I get stronger. And every time I get stronger, you also get stronger,” Rex looked up at where the fissure was, eyes widening maniacally. He scratched his own chest with his claws, and blood seeped out from the cut, a habit he picked up unconsciously. “As expected of someone who wanted to harm us! You should at least be this strong to fight against me!”
Boom!
Rex blasted again.
But this time, the smile on his face was wider because he could sense it.
He could sense the Immortal Slugs’ frustration.
According to Prince Edward, Immortal Slugs were lazy monsters by nature, content to linger and wait for prey to make the fatal mistake of wandering too close. And even then—more often than not, they’d simply ignore it.
Only when driven by hunger or stirred by some foul whim would they strike.
Immortal Slugs are lazy, but their range of attack is wide.
It varied depending on how big the actual body of the Immortal Slugs was, so most of the time, the people would not stray closer than a mile from it. Haxel must’ve either starved the Immortal Slugs or perhaps deliberately provoked them into such hostility.
Regardless, since they were lazy, the moment they decided to attack, they expected results.
Moving must’ve expanded a lot of stamina for them.
Now, since Rex was actively sabotaging the feast, the Immortal Slugs were becoming frustrated.
And frustration meant making more mistakes.

Just as he saved and threw another noble out of the Desolate Zone, Rex paused for a second.
He turned to Empress Morgana, deciding inside his fury-filled mind that saving her next would be his ideal move. Once she was freed, she could handle the White Mask and the serpent—be it leaving them to be eaten by the Immortal Slugs, or continuing to have them settle in the Burrowing Valley.
No matter what, Empress Morgana was the priority.
“Hmm?”
Crack!
Rex somersaulted in time when the ground suddenly turned black and a black pillar stabbed out.
As he was mid-air and looked down, he realized—the entire ground within the Desolate Zone had been liquified, turning into shallow water that almost reached his shin, “Still desperate to resist?! Don’t even bother. I’m the perfect counter against you!”
Like a meteor, Rex dived down as countless black pillars sprouted and tried to latch onto him.
He twisted and maneuvered, avoiding each one like a missile avoiding a barrage of anti-missiles.
It was somewhat beautiful to see how flawlessly Rex was avoiding these threats.
A symphony between his reflexes and senses was a sight to witness.
Not to mention the Law of Misdirection that made some of the black pillars miss an obvious target.
But as he made his way to Empress Morgana, there was another noble who was struggling.
He looked around with a bead of sweat trickling down the side of his face, noticing that the barrier made from Law power that was protecting him was breaking. Above him, the timer dropped below a minute, and that’s bad news.
Rex twirled mid-air and made a detour to reach this noble.

“Fuck off out of here, princess. I can’t keep protecting you.” Rex said, gesturing for him to leave.
Hearing this, the noble’s face twitched in disbelief—a mere knight daring to speak to him as though he was beneath honor and respect is nothing short of presumptuous. Fury welled in his chest. He longed to spit curses, even hurl threats, but the shallow water made him think otherwise.
Instead of dealing in petty quelling, his life was more important as he sprinted out of the Desolate Zone.
Rex looked at this in quiet surprise.
Most of the nobles were limp after being rescued, but this guy was still energetic.
Then, he swept his gaze to the remaining nobles.

Two nobles remaining—Marquess Darius and Empress Morgana.
Both were already under a minute.
April’s group and Ethan’s group were handling the nobles on the far side; only Marquess Darius, along with Empress Morgana, remained. The two had stayed behind to shield others, and thanks to the height of their strength, Rex saved them for the last—the timers above their heads gave him the most leeway.
But now, their timer has reached the critical limit.
Enduring the Immortal Slugs’ suppression—and holding back the White Mask at the same time is taking a toll on them, and their timer was dropping fast. Rex wanted to rush towards them, but he stumbled; a grunt escaped his lips.
It was the pain from the Gradual Penalty that spiked suddenly.
He was caught off guard.
However, now that he had already prepared for the pain, the next time wouldn’t faze him.
“I should move quic—?!”
In the nick of time, Rex sidestepped to avoid a strike from below.
As he came to a halt, five more black pillars emerged from the ground, but unlike the ones earlier, these ones didn’t aim to impale him. Rather, these five encircled him from all sides. And Rex also sensed a concentrated energy on each of these black pillars’ tips.
He noticed that their pointy tips were round and filled with energy to the brim.
And it was pulsating.
“A bom—?”
Boom!!
Boom!
Rex was devastated by the explosion—his skin bubbled from the heat of the unknown energy.
Seeing this, Princess Davina gritted her teeth.
She reached her sword out of the barrier of law that was protecting her, and pushed the blade against the Immortal Slugs’ main body that was sucking the barrier’s energy as well as her energy. Her muscles bulged under her armor as she tried to slash the main body with her own Law.
But the moment she pressed against the main body, her sword snapped.
Princess Davina looked at her broken sword in shock.
’The sword was forged from a dense, energy-infused material, so it also suffered from this dome,’ She clicked her tongue bitterly as she had expected this to happen. ’My law energy made the blade sharper, yet with its durability suppressed, it couldn’t handle the pressure.’
She looked ahead, seeing the cloud of explosions with concern.
Frankly, Princess Davina knew that the nobles had been useless throughout this entire ordeal, but that was because they were struck by the initial impact and got wrapped by the Immortal Slugs’ main body, so it was hard for them to do anything.
Haxel wanted them dead, and he prepared well to take down the nobles.
But even so, she was reluctant to leave all of this to Rex when he had done so much.
It was especially concerning since she, out of all people, knew how far Rex was willing to go when he set his mind on something he wanted. He wouldn’t stop, no matter how battered—he became, and that’s not a good mentality against a monster that drained other living beings.
’Since I can’t use my sword, that leaves only my hand. ’Princess Davina looked down at his own hand, deciding that she was going to try. ’There’s a real chance my arm will snap… My law isn’t good for this kind of thing, and I never coated it on my bare hands either. Even so…’
Princess Davina has to try instead of waiting to be saved.
As long as she was freed from the main body, she could move freely and help Rex to escape this peril.
Gritting her teeth, she reached her hand out of the barrier and grabbed the Immortal Slugs’ main body.
Her muscles underneath her armor bulged as she tried to rip it with her bare hands.
“Krghh…” Princess Davina’s face twitched as she exerted more strength.
She stared at the stubborn main body in frustration.
’One burst,’ She thought, realizing that the main body was keeping up with her, adapting to her strength no matter how hard she tried. But she recalled how Rex did it. ’I need to burst my strength in an instant to surprise the main body.’
“Rrgh!”
Krrk!
Princess Davina was pleasantly surprised that the main body cracked a little.
But as she was about to do it again, a sudden pain seeped into her arm—penetrating through her bones.
Looking up, she saw Rex emerge.
He survived the explosion barrage, but now he was wrapped tightly by the Immortal Slugs like a black cocoon. Only his head could be seen, while the rest of his body was tightly wrapped. As it turns out, the explosions also spewed black goo that caught Rex off guard.
As if that wasn’t enough, the Immortal Slugs went a bit further.
A dozen black pillars latched onto the cocoon and restrained Rex harder.
ROAR!!
Rex unleashed a painful roar as his body was squeezed hard, shattering the bones inside his body into a million pieces. He clamped down on the cocoon—eating the Immortal Slugs like a hungry beast, but his head was caught by another black pillar, and held it in place.

Fearing for his safety, Princess Davina looked at the main body and squeezed harder.
’Come on…’
Krrk!
’Just a little bit more…’
Krkkk!
’Just a little bit more!!’
Crack!
Princess Davina’s eyes shot open—as another blade struck from the side, breaking the Immortal Slugs’ main body. She blinked her eyes slowly—and then looked at the figure standing beside her. “I don’t need your help.”
“Save that thought for later,” April said, brandishing her nodachi. “Get out here and help me.”
Upon hearing this, Princess Davina straightened her back.
Both of them stared ahead, a weapon in hand, desiring to do the exact same thing.
To help Rex deal with this messy situation.
However, the two of them knew well that Rex wouldn’t want them to do that.
Despite his peril, coming to his aid would only put them on his way—not because they were weak, but because of Rex’s fierce personality. In his current state, he couldn’t differentiate friend and foe, so there is no need for them to help him.
Even without them, Rex seemed to be more than capable of surviving.
Instead, the two of them dashed in the same instant.
One went straight to Marquess Darius, while the other went straight to Empress Morgana.
