Chapter 1621: Blood-drunk (2)
Chapter 1621: Blood-drunk (2)
April could feel it even back inside the Forsaken Tower.
She could feel that Rex wasn’t completely open to her—there are some parts of him that he held back, reluctant to show them to her openly. In the years they stayed inside the tower, there were times when he was frustrated with his training.
Oftentimes, his body would be shaking uncontrollably.
Clearly, he was holding back the wrath inside of him, knowing that she was with him in there.
His aura also changed.
It weighed on the chamber like a heavy blanket.
During those times, April’s body didn’t dare to approach him.
Her instincts told her that it was dangerous to approach her, and now, she saw a glimpse of it.
’I initially thought there was something wrong with him. Madness. Being frustrated at his growth when he was growing faster than anyone I ever knew is sheer madness.’ April’s eyes flickered as she watched Rex slaughter the voidal monsters with glee. ’But now I realized, he wasn’t frustrated because of that.’
’He’s frustrated because he was longing to kill something,’ She swallowed harshly.
Now it all makes sense to her.
Rex’s frustration and the warning from her instincts… It was because he was holding back bloodlust.
Even though April didn’t know much about his past, he must’ve felt caged in the Forsaken Tower.
Crack!
In a burst of power, Rex punched the ground with the Red Dawn of Kaiser.
His punch unleashed a seismic shockwave, splitting the ground beneath him and hurling all monsters within a fifty-meter radius off their feet like leaves in a storm. Rex channeled life energy into the Red Dawn of Kaiser again and swiped, sending another red arc skyward.
All voidal monsters, hundreds of them, were sliced into two and killed.
Rex lifted his gaze to the sky, arms outstretched as if welcoming a gift from the dark sky.
A maniacal grin twisted his blood-slicked face, sharp canines bared in primal glee, and a low chuckle vibrating his throat—feral, unstable, and alive with violence. Above him, the voidal monsters that were cleaved mid-air burst open like grotesque fruit.
Blood sprayed in every direction, cascading down in thick, crimson sheets.
It created a rain, but not a normal one.
A rain that was born from slaughter, a red blossom of carnage unfurling across the sky like falling petals.
Rex stood at the center of it all, unflinching.
Splash!
Big blood droplets drenched him entirely—his hair matted, his face streaked, and his armor soaked.
It clung to him in dark, syrupy trails, dropping from his chin, and pooling at his feet.
However, he didn’t wipe it away.
He didn’t raise his hand to shield himself.
Instead, he welcomed it. Embraced it.
He bathed in it as if it were holy water.
In that moment, Rex didn’t only look victorious but also inhuman—like something born from the lust of battle and blood. A blood-drenched wraith with a smile carved from madness. Even the nearby voidal monsters, mindless as they are and should be, hesitated to lunge at him.
All of them watched Rex, who was drenched in the blood of their kin, and shuddered.
“What’s wrong?” Rex’s hoarse voice echoed. “Let’s continue!”
Swoosh!
Rex’s eyes flicked to the side as he sensed something approaching.
Instinctively, he swiped at it, and realized that it was another voidal knight.
But he frowned when he noticed the voidal knight’s back was facing him as it lunged.
Clearly, it wasn’t lunging at him—but rather thrown at him.
Just then, Rex made eye contact with Haxel—who was also dominating his side of the battlefield with the greatsword poised on his shoulder like a warmonger. Around him were the mangled carcasses of the voidal monsters he killed.
Small chunks of meat instead of the clean-cut carcasses around Rex.
Before he could respond, Haxel was already fighting the voidal monsters once again.
Even after more than five minutes, the tail-end of the horde still couldn’t be seen.
Rex didn’t care, though.
Growl!
A brave Voidal Knight seized the opportunity to ambush Rex from behind while his focus was on Haxel across the battlefield. But before its fangs could reach their mark, Rex’s hand shot back—gripping its face with brutal precision and strength.
His fingers clenched around its skull like a vice, stopping the monster mid-lunge.
Rex waited patiently, holding it aloft by its head, before he threw it directly at Haxel.
Swoosh!
Haxel was swinging his greatsword wildly, shattering the voidal monsters with relative ease.
As ten voidal monsters lunged at him—with savage ferocity, he gripped the hilt of his greatsword with both hands, ready to cut them down in a single, sweeping strike. But just as he began to swing, another voidal monster that moved like a bullet hurled itself headfirst into the hilt, slamming against the weapon with bone-cracking force and throwing off his momentum.
For a second there, Haxel’s eyes lowered, expecting the voidal monster to bite him.
But instead, it seemed to be dead.
Haxel turned to the other side and saw that Rex was smiling at him.
It was Rex—he threw the voidal monster at the exact moment Haxel was about to swing.
Naturally, that breaks the momentum, and the ten voidal monsters bite into Haxel.
Gritting his teeth, Haxel raised his free hand and shoved away the serpents sinking their fangs into him, their venom already coursing through his bloodstream. But even then, he retained his motor control as his blood was too hot for the venom.
Making a sharp flick of his greatsword, he cleaved through several voidal monsters.
It was shaped differently from the others.
As opposed to being a snake or even a humanoid snake, these ones are humanoid too, but shaped like a body of black goo wearing a plain white mask—eerily similar to the Voidal Monarch. However, power-wise, they aren’t even close.
But Haxel didn’t stop there.
He dashed forward with relentless momentum, impaling three more of the masked voidal monsters.
He did it in one sweeping thrust before soaring skyward with a mighty leap.
Mid-air, he pulled the greatsword free—from their bodies, gripped the hilt with both hands, twisted the blade sideways, and cleaved it with the force of a berserker’s strength. Akin to hitting a ball with a bat. The impact was devastating.
All of the monsters’ bodies exploded on contact, their bodies reduced to mangled chunks.
Gore rained through the air, slamming onto Rex with mockery.
It was a messy, unspoken payback from Haxel.
Rex shielded himself from the chunks of flesh and smirked inwardly, finding this moment thrilling.
On the other hand, the soldiers who were tunnelling voidal monsters that managed to go through to the designated path, watched the duo in utter surprise. None of them knew that Haxel and the new knight had a problem with each other.
“Sir Haxel seemed to be fine earlier. What happened?”
“I don’t know, but clearly the two of them didn’t like each other.”
“Even then, fighting during a mission…? Is it really that bad?”
Some of the soldiers couldn’t help but comment, curious and also shocked about the situation.
“Look, I think the new knight is winning territory against Sir Haxel!”
Standing nearby, April narrowed her eyes as she noticed Rex beginning to push into Haxel’s flank—his forces were already mostly recovered and back in formation, so he decided to move. With ruthless precision, he carved a bloody path through the battlefield, cutting down anything in his way as he advanced toward Haxel.
And still, their twisted games continued.
Both still threw voidal monsters at each other with reckless mockery.
As if the chaos around them didn’t matter.
Like the entire world had narrowed down to just the two of them.
“Swinging that stupidly heavy Soul Artifact is tiring, isn’t it?” Rex mocked when he was near enough to speak, as heh killed dozens of voidal monsters with a single swipe. “Come on now, you have to keep going, and push me back…”
Growl!
A Voidal Knight, taking the shape of a snake, lunged with lightning-fast speed with its maw opened.
Before it clamped on Haxel’s face, Rex caught it by the head and crushed its skull with his bare hands.
“It’s going to look like I’m doing better than you if you don’t step up…” Rex cackled in delight.
Hearing this, Haxel fixed his grip and swung straight at Rex with power.
Rex leaned back, narrowly avoiding the swing, but the voidal monster right behind him couldn’t.
It got struck and exploded into smithereens.
Had Rex been a second too late to dodge that swing, his head would’ve been decapitated.
“Oh, that was a close one…”
“Stay away, Sire. It’d be unfortunate if I accidentally decapitated you.”
“Now we’re talking!”
Splash!
Both Rex and Haxel were caught off guard; the veins in their widened eyes burst when, without warning, two dark lances tore through the Black Rift like a bullet, moving faster than either could react. It pierced straight through their chests in a single, devastating strike.
Blood burst from their mouths as their bodies were hurled aside, skidding across the ground.
Seeing this, a few soldiers immediately break ranks to help them.
Losing their leader this early into the mission would be catastrophic.
It would immediately scatter the forces without a fight.
“Stop!” April exclaimed. “Stay in your formation! Don’t underestimate your knights!”
Even though it might look fatal, she was certain that Rex and Haxel weren’t that easily killed.
Had that been the case, the two of them wouldn’t have gone out on their own like this.
Some of the soldiers still persisted ahead, but they were immediately obliterated by the voidal monsters, surrounded from all sides. As for the others who almost followed, they stopped themselves, deciding to listen to April’s command.
April focused ahead as her brows furrowed together, “It’s the tail-end…”
Emerging from the darkness ahead was the tail of the horde.
Surprisingly enough, the tail-end wasn’t the weakest, but the strongest instead.
Unlike the head and body of the horde, the tail has more Voidal Knights in their midst, and among them were several at the Master Immortal Spirit rank—an alarming threat to their forces. There were five in total, and of those five, three stood out as particularly dangerous—Special Voidal Knights.
April’s eyes narrowed as these three massive monsters emerged from the shadows.
They slithered forward with dreadful grace.
Their venormous, serpentine body that was only a bit smaller—than the Voidal Prince and long enough to probably wrap around a mountain, coiled in overlapping plates of natural armor. Even from afar, one could still hear clearly as each segment clinked like forged iron dragged across stone.
Long, curving fangs poked out of their mouths—their tips gleamed with a wet sheen of bluish venom.
One that certainly would kill anyone that was unfortunate enough to get inflicted by it.
However, what stood out the most was not their size or fangs.
April fixed her eyes on their sides—where writhing whip-like appendages could be seen growing from their necks—tentacles that lashed and slashed through the air with erratic fury. Each movement was sharp and violent, as though these monsters themselves couldn’t contain the chaos that birthed it.
They were monstrosities made manifest, and they were approaching.
Just then, under their very eyes, Rex and Haxel climbed to their feet.
Even with the long lance stabbing through their chests, they could still regain their footing.
From where the dark lance stabbed them, April could only imagine how painful it was, as their arms almost fell off. But oddly enough, these two don’t seem to be in pain. Instead, they were smiling with gritted teeth.
A wound like that would make anyone lose strength.
Heck, even a wound way less fatal than this would make some soldiers lie down in pain.
However, that had the opposite effect on these two.
Instead of growing weaker, their auras surged even higher, even stronger.
April could tell now that they were both similar.
“Pain only made them stronger,” She mumbled whisperingly. “Both of them are made for battles.”
