Chapter 1517 - 1517: Possession
Ever since Rex knew that he was a candidate for Invincibility, a Scion of Vertex, he had thought about what it means to be invincible. Power is the only thing he could think of, possessing an overwhelming power that could suppress anyone.
A power so great that mortals and Gods would bow down to it.
It was his natural path—the path the System wanted him to take, no matter the cost.
Hatred has pushed him this far, to be the strongest entity in the Mortal Realm, even if it’s for a moment.
Now, that hatred has transformed into resolve.
His resolve to protect those he cared about, even if the Gods themselves came down to hurt them.
Once, he began to wonder—what would resolve transform into next?
For some reason, thinking about that reminded him of the First Human Emperor.
What drive did he have to reach his level? And what compelled him to do what he did?
Regardless, what Rex wanted to do right now was clear.
Even if I need to sacrifice myself, I’ll protect them. That’s what I wanted to do.
Rex ran.
Or something close to it.
His feet splashed against the puddled earth, soaked and blackened beneath the cursed rainfall.
Each step was a war waged against his own body—a body that should have collapsed long ago. It was moving solely through willpower. His limbs trembled, barely stitched together by borrowed strength as the rain soaked him to the bone, slicking his raven hair against his face, trailing down his neck like ink from the heavens.
At this point, most parts of his brain were deactivated.
Only the parts that would keep him conscious, focused, and powerful remained awake.
More importantly, the part of his brain that stores memories was reeling.
Save Nivellen.
Splash!
Protect the pack.
Splash!
Protect my people.
Splash!
Save Edward.
Splash!
Inside Rex’s mind, he recounted those four promises endlessly.
He kept repeating them, fearing that the moment he forgot, his body would collapse.
In his current condition, there was no chance that he would be able to defeat the Singing Lady, who was fully empowered by the Black Rain, making her stronger than ever. But…it doesn’t matter.
It wasn’t the point—the point was for him to try his absolute best.
No matter the cost.
Rex staggered again, nearly falling.
<Notice: the user is under the influence of the Black Rain!>
<Be advised, the Voidal Metamorphosis process is hastened!>
Under the black rain’s power, the Flare Crystal’s influence was greatly reduced.
Some of the Black Rift’s wind began seeping through, grabbing hold of Rex’s mind and body.
At this point, the Black Rain’s effect was no longer just on his skin—it was inside him, creeping like a fog across his mind. His thoughts were sluggish, drowned beneath a haze that turned the excruciating pain into something deeper, something more intimate.
Everyone is depending on me.
It’s because they trust me, no… It’s because that was the reason I insisted on living.
Every nerve screamed for him to stop, to lie down and let his body rest.
But he continued.
His breath came loud and desperate, as if dragging oxygen into his lungs required conscious effort.
I must match their expectations. I must succeed.
Pain gnawed at him mercilessly, he bled with every breath, and his muscles tore with each motion. Rex wasn’t normal—he was far from it, and he could keep pushing forward through the storm when many others dared not.
But there was a limit to how much his mind could endure.
And he was at the limit.
About half a mile away, he could already see the Mahkam Ruin’s bubble and the screams of the people.
Despite running with all his might, the bubble seemed to get farther and farther—the land beneath him was stretching. But the noise… the screams of despair—became clearer. Rex panted roughly—only one of his eyes was open.
I need to succeed.
His eyes blurred and focused.
I need to succeed.
Something inside him was taking over, another side of him.
I need to succeed. I… I need to…
“I don’t care!!”
Suddenly, both his eyes shot open, feral and frantic, as a maniacal chuckle escaped his lips.
Underneath the darkness of the Black Rift, darker with the mixture from the Black Rain, Rex’s savage eyes shone like orbs. Both were abnormal, not the same crimson shade they normally had. This time—his eyes glowed with the color of molten gold and ember-lit red.
Almost like flames trapped in liquid heat, like molten lava.
Once the transformation happened, Rex made a sharp turn and sprinted away from the Mahkam Ruin.
Seeing this from a distance, Viora frowned, “Where is he going?”
It was the same with Crimoria and Linthia.
“Where is he going?” Crimoria muttered in confusion. “Is he running away?”
“No, Brother Rex never ran away,” Linthia shook her head and moved to the side to get a better view.
She squinted her eyes, looking at Rex, and found his weird eyes.
Such a change made her skeptical, but considering that this was Rex, anything was possible.
But then, she saw Rex do something that was quite weird—along the way, while running at full speed, he summoned Voidal Monster corpses from thin air, and began devouring them. His teeth ground both flesh and bones without restraint.
It was quite barbaric.
Clearly, he was trying to regain some strength somehow, by any means necessary.
As a Werewolf, devouring flesh could help regain some stamina and strength.
Linthia had rarely, if not never, seen Rex do it so openly.
But then again, this was a time of urgency.
Shifting her gaze to the far distance, to where Rex was running to, Linthia realized that there were some Voidal Monsters—that were in the tower earlier. All of them are running away due to Rex’s display of power.
Even when the Singing Lady’s aura was flaring, none of them came back.
It seemed they realized this battle was not for weak monsters like them.
“He’s chasing after those Voidal Monsters,” Linthia mumbled in confusion. “But I don’t know why…”
Meanwhile, the world has now been shaded by a bright red color from Rex’s vision.
‘Oh…? What’s this? What are these flashing blue lights? Is he half-robot?’
Rex thought to himself, amused at the sight of the holographic blue lights, scanning the Voidal Monsters ahead, and told him exactly what they were and how strong they were. Among them, his eyes fixed on one Voidal Monster.
It was a strong one compared to the bunch, but that wasn’t what he wanted it for.
On the Soul Artifact section—what was stated there was the reason he was chasing this particular monster.
…
<Lentera, the Chorus-bearer>
Soul Artifact: Lesser Cursed Melody Chord — A-grade (Hybrid-type)
…
Biting and tearing off the head of a Voidal Monster, Rex nodded and ran faster.
Downing dozens of stamina and healing elixirs, added with the Voidal Monster corpses he had eaten, some of his strength returned. In half a minute—he managed to reach Lentera, who was a ghost-like monster, with a skull-face and wearing a pristine white dress.
Glancing over her shoulder, Lentera flinched when she saw a shadow blitzed right at her.
Before she could react, something grabbed her neck.
Whatever grabbed her didn’t give her time to react as she got pulled away forcefully.
She was dragged across the ground, moving at lightning-fast speed.
Desperately, she tried to tilt her head down, and when she did, she realized that the shadow that grabbed her was actually the person who took down the Singing Lady’s doll body earlier—Rex. She was trying to escape him, but it seemed he had already caught on.
Earlier, hiding inside the corpses within the coffins were her and a couple of other chorus-bearers.
It was she who knocked them down and even took down the four Werewolf Voidal Knights.
From the looks of it, Rex was hunting each one of them down in haste.
Five minutes passed, and he had already caught all five chorus-bearers.
Rex was dragging them by their dresses, three on his right hand and two on his left hand.
“Lord Rex!”
Viora finally managed to reach him, but he doesn’t stop.
Despite being protected by the Saintess’ power—the Black Rain, coupled with the Black Rift, slowed her down, but she was here now. Looking at the wailing chorus-bearers, each bore a fatal wound that made them squeal and helpless, she raised an eyebrow in confusion.
“What is your plan?” She asked, shouting a little because of the rain.
“I need a chain,” Rex answered, his voice was controlled and deep. “Something to bind them together.”
Upon hearing this, Viora was confused, but she didn’t question it.
Swish!
Viora created a golden chain made entirely of sunlight.
It was easy for her, and the chain was at least around ten meters long or perhaps longer.
Once Rex saw the chain, he came to an abrupt stop.
He grabbed the golden chain off of Viora’s hand roughly and immediately went to work.
As he was kneeling down to tend the chorus-bearers, Viora noticed his eyes—something was different about them. She could not quite realize what was different, but then, she remembered that Rex’s eyes were usually a deep crimson shape.
Now, they were bright orange, like molten lava.
“Lord Rex, what happened to your eyes?” Viora asked and continued. “How come you’re moving?”
Despite the question, Rex ignored her completely.
“Kyaargh!”
An astral scream escaped one of the chorus-bearers’ mouths as Rex stabbed his elongated fingernail into her chest. He created a hole right underneath the poor Voidal Monster’s collarbone, and with a smooth movement, shoved the golden chain into that hole roughly.
It was a painful process, even Viora felt a little bit bad for the chorus-bearer.
But Rex was completely fine, he was stone cold.
Once the first one was done, he continued to the others, until everyone has a hole.
Initially, Viora was confused as to what Rex was doing, but now, she realized what his aim was.
‘He’s tying them together with the chain… He’s making a massive necklace with them as the pendants.’
Viora couldn’t believe it.
She didn’t know Rex was this barbaric, and more importantly, she didn’t know for what purpose.
Just then, once Rex melted both ends of the chain and connected them together, he was done.
As soon as he pulled the chain at the center, the five chorus-bearers writhed in pain as the chain pulled them by their collarbones. Each pull or movement of the chain caused them to squeal, creating several high and low tunes.
It was only then Viora sucked in a cold breath in realization.
Rex was making a musical instrument out of them, and their pain was the tune.
Once he was done, he sprinted back to the Mahkam Ruin.
His diversion from getting there was because of this… because he wanted to prepare a gift.
A gift that would surely pull the Singing Lady’s attention.
…
Meanwhile, within the Mahkam Ruin.
It was total chaos.
Many refused to believe that the Singing Lady managed to infiltrate their ruin—if she really was inside, the people should’ve known or at least sensed her presence, that is what most of them argued. Even as the torrent of voidal energy appeared, none of them wanted to believe it.
But that denial was squashed once the Singing Lady blasted open the blocked entrance of the mine.
Once she stepped out of the mine, everyone became a believer.
As much as a shock this was, she was here—The Singing Lady managed to get into their ruin.
She must’ve got inside through the dark tide, but regardless, she was now here.
Looking around the place, as if she were looking at a new world, the Singing Lady smiled.
Then, she stretched her arms to the side, closing her eyes and basking under the Black Rain.
For Voidal Monsters, the Black Rain good fortune, which meant her triumph was already—within her grasp. All she needed to do now was to take it. Once she opened her eyes again, her entire body turned astral, like a ghost.
She flew across the ruin and landed at the ruin’s entrance, right where the crowd gathered.
Realizing that it was her standing in their way, the people turned pale.
It was the end for them—none of them would be able to escape her clutches.
However, instead of killing them instantly, the Singing Lady lifted a finger and gathered a small lump of dense voidal energy on its tip. Then, she pointed to her behind, at the main ruin, while still keeping eye contact with the crowd.
Smiling mischievously, she fired the lump of voidal energy.
Like a bullet, it cuts through the air, and when it strikes the main ruin, a flash blinds the people.
Kaboom!!
