Chapter 1494 - 1494: Rocky Puzzle
Rex ignored the uproar from the heirs and focused ahead.
He could lie to them, and perhaps that was the better choice than telling the truth.
But frankly speaking, he doesn’t care that much.
Matter of fact, he thought it’d be better to make them see him as a superior individual so that they would naturally orbit around him and listen to his instructions. Possessing the blood of a powerful noble house usually has an effect to make anyone proud and arrogant.
And this would help them lower their ego until their endeavor came to an end.
Rex turned to face Amanir, who was still inside the carriage.
“Stay with Kraken and don’t go anywhere.” He said.
Amanir shrugged, “I’m not planning to leave this carriage.”
If things went as planned, once Rex met with the Spirit Emperor, he was scheduled to fight a powerful spirit. But he didn’t need to come and fight with Rex—and Linthia, risking himself in the process.
Since his Spiritual Vein was normal, not an imbalanced one, he didn’t need to fight.
Perhaps, this was for the best as someone must look after Kraken.
And for some reason, Kraken was fonder of Amanir now than Rex.
It was a sudden change, and Rex didn’t know the reason.
“Crimoria, are you going to station some of your men to guard the carriages?” Rex asked.
“Of course,” She nodded. “Half of them would stay behind,”
“Good,” Rex gazed ahead again and led the way. “Come on, let’s start the hunt.”
Slowly, the group marched forward, stepping deep between the crevices of countless rock formations.
Each step they made slapped against—the wet rocky ground, the air was sullen and cold, and the smell of danger was thick in the air. Clearly, this was a Voidal Monster’s lair, but for some reason, there was no trace of voidal energy.
No trace of the two special Voidal Knights that were supposed to be living in this place.
On the side, Rex noticed a big hole in the rock formation—big enough to fit all of them at once.
Around this hole were scratch marks, fresh, confirming that there were indeed something living here.
“Don’t get too close to the holes,” Rex instructed carefully—Great Elder Rosa knew the locations of the special Voidal Knights by tracking the unique aura that the Life Gem inside of them emitted, but she didn’t know what kind of Voidal Knight they were. “I believe these Voidal Knights are using these rock formations as their cover, their home.”
As he said that, he turned to Viora behind him, “Are you not going to tell me where they are?”
“I’d have told you if I knew,” Viora answered, faking innocence.
Out of the entire group, Rex could tell that Viora was the strongest, but it seemed she was briefed by the great elder to not intervene. She was a bad liar. She surely knew where the Voidal Knights were, she must be able to sense them, but she refused to tell.
Nodding his head, Rex turned to Linthia, “How was it?”
“It’s hard to pinpoint where they were.” She shook her head. “These rock formations are a good blockage.”
“That’s true…” Rex’s piercing eyes scanned the area, particularly the rock formations that were eerily still around them like silent sentinels. “For some reason, these rock formations limited our senses. Some sort of natural barriers,”
“One of them noticed us,” April suddenly said. “I can feel its leaking killing intent fixing on us,”
As soon as she said that, the group readied themselves to battle.
A wet and distant, slithering squelch could be heard approaching them, followed by the relentless sound of scraping and skittering—like claws raking over stone. Realizing that they got incoming, Taylan fixed his battle gloves, his Soul Artifact, and raised his hands into his fighting stance.
Hannah’s long amber hair glowed with life energy, growing longer and spreading like a protective shield.
Beside her, April’s crown sizzled with a beautiful sapphire color as her aura spiked—the intense amount of life energy coursed from the crown to her nodachi, causing the entire thing to gleam with power. She displayed the power of an Immortal Spirit 5, no, beyond that even.
Lastly, Riko also prepared to battle.
He put one foot to his behind and lowered his stance.
Activating his Soul Artifact, his entire right arm turned astral blue, which also activated his war glaive.
Being heirs of a powerful noble family, none of their talents were disappointing.
Each of their Soul Artifact was at least S-grade, and all of them are geniuses in their own right.
Soon, a chittering cacophony filled the air, blending with the rapid patter of countless feet.
A sickening, undulating hiss, like a living tide surging forth from the earth.
As the heirs readied themselves to battle—the couple of dozen soldiers, Crimoria’s men, also moved in a synchronized manner into a circle formation. Each one of them moved with a sure and clear, practiced movement, a solid unit that has a united soul.
Just then, Taylan glanced and found a confusing sight.
Rex, Linthia, and even Viora were still standing with their back upright.
None of them were in their battle stances as if these approaching, chirping sounds weren’t a problem.
“What are the three of you doing?” He asked in confusion. “We’re going to be attacked.”
Upon hearing this, Linthia glanced at him and shook her head, “Don’t be arrogant, this is the real deal, this isn’t training—the Voidal Monsters aren’t going to pull their punches and nobody is going to save you if you get into trouble.”
“Then what are you suggesting?” Hannah asked sharply.
She was surprised to hear Linthia talking to them as if they were pampered heirs when they were not.
Of course, they have little to no real battle experience, but still, they are strong.
“Don’t rush into a fight recklessly,” Rex said as he raised his arm, signaling Linthia to step back—and regain her composure. “Forgive my sister, she meant well. Look around you, take in your surroundings. Never engage unless it’s absolutely necessary,”
Hannah turned away and scoffed, “All of them are only Voidal Pawns, what’s there to be wary about?”
She was slightly annoyed—she wasn’t fond of how Linthia treated them.
Rex glanced over to Linthia with a frown.
She must’ve felt that too, the Voidal Knight behind this is powerful. She was unnerved by its presence.
Just from her expression alone, it showed that she was on edge.
It was the reason why she snapped like that.
On the other hand, those who were listening to what Rex had to say scrutinized their surroundings.
‘High rock formations choking us from all sides, there were holes here and there that could pose as an entry point for the Voidal Pawns, and the ground is wet…’ April thought inside, the place was putting them at a great disadvantage. ‘It’s not good for us to fight here’
Riko also thought of the same thing, the Voidal Pawns could surround them.
If it’s only several Voidal Pawns, then this shouldn’t be a problem.
However, judging from the approaching sound, there should be hundreds of Voidal Pawns on their way.
Crack!
Just then, the first Voidal Pawn appeared.
It clawed its way out of the rocky ground and exposed itself as a vicious mouse the size of a person.
With a high-pitched growl, the hideous-looking mouse with overgrown sharp fangs lunged at the nearest target—Riko. Reacting instantly, Riko tightened his grip on the war glaive—and swung in a sweeping arc, cleaving the creature into two as a spray of blood splattered across his armor.
Before he could draw his next breath, more of these mice came out and attacked them.
A swarm of them, thousands of these creatures, emerged and instantly attacked.
Following that was a brutal battle royale.
Since all of them were Immortal Spirits, disposing of these mice was easy.
But the numbers were concerning, there’s only so much each of them could handle at once.
Coupled with the terrain that was a home advantage for these mice, things could get ugly soon.
Rex swatted a mouse and exploded it into a mist of blood easily before turning to look at Crimoria.
Just like the others, she was battling the mice, hacking her sword with the grace of an expert, killing a couple of them with each swing. She was near her men, at the very back, while the heirs, Viora, Linthia, along Rex were way in front.
Crimoria has been quiet, her actions restrained.
It was almost as if she were keeping quiet so as not to draw any attention.
Moreover, rather than leading her men, she merely defended herself, making no effort to instruct her men to make the circle formation bigger to also protect everyone. It was as if she was doing the bare minimum only, with no intention of contributing more.
“Arghk!” Taylan grunted as a mouse managed to headbutt him.
Despite the armor, the force from the headbutt was able to go through and caused him to grunt in pain.
As he stumbled back, Hannah’s hair accidentally struck his behind and sent him flying.
“Taylan! I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to!” She exclaimed in surprise.
Having to fight in such a confined space made it hard for them to fight properly and avoid mistakenly attacking each other. Rex kept his watchful gaze and saw that even as Taylan was being lunged by three mice, Crimoria didn’t move to help.
An heir of the Aurelius House was in trouble, and yet she doesn’t seem to care.
Wow… Is it really that serious? I know they were testing me, but still.
Rex was taken aback by Great Elder Rosa’s resolve.
For her to instruct Crimoria to not provide any help whatsoever, even at the cost of the heirs’ lives, that was quite extreme. On top of testing his character, Great Elder Rosa also wanted to know whether Rex was worth it for her to take a risk in helping him.
And to do that, she orchestrated this.
But still, isn’t letting them die in cold blood a bit too much?
“Linthia,” Rex called with a meaningful tone.
Not even needing him to elaborate, Linthia summoned her fairy wings, her Soul Artifact, and flew up to the top of the rock formations. Staying in this crevice would kill them all, this situation was siding with the mice, so they needed to move.
Rex hacked another and looked up, seeing Linthia giving him a thumbs up.
Swoosh!
In an instant, Rex summoned the Red Dawn of Kaiser and dashed.
He went from stationary to sprinting with an explosive dash, clawing dozens of mice along the way.
Slash!
Taylan, who was being bitten across his armor—and buried under a sea of mice, panted heavily as out of nowhere, all of the mice on him—were hacked away, and now Rex was standing in front of him. For a moment there, he blinked to understand the situation.
“Get up,” Rex’s voice boomed, snapping him out of his daze. “We need to move.”
Upon hearing this, Taylan accepted Rex’s hand and climbed back to his feet.
Once he stood, Rex turned to the others, “Climb to the top of the rock formations, now!!”
Almost on queue after his voice rang, piercing through the screeches of these mice, the heirs as well as the soldiers who came nodded and leaped onto the rock formations and began to climb. Just as Rex told them earlier, they avoided the holes on the rock formations in case there were more inside.
Viora smiled lightly, expecting no less from Rex.
She nonchalantly flew towards the peak—the barrier she created protected her from the mice.
It was the same with Crimoria.
Unlike the others who needed to climb the rock formations, she only needed one leap to reach the top.
“Hold on,”
Rex grabbed Taylan by his chest plate, and with a powerful flex of his arm, hurled Taylan skyward right before seven mice—lunged toward them. Taylan slammed against the jagged rock formation but caught himself just in time, narrowly avoiding a free fall.
As he looked down below, he saw a massive aura that exploded and shook the entire area.
“How is he 21 years old…?” Taylan smiled wryly.
