Chapter 1140: Midnight Wine
In times of war and chaos, hope was the strongest force for people with wisdom.
Anything good that happened—was an evident prospect, of seeing the light at the end of the tunnel—a natural fuel that made the force of hope at its strongest. In times of peace, was the complete opposite.
Good things are happening left and right, steering the world in a better direction.
At the current moment, good things are really happening.
Everybody, including both parties—Humans and Supernaturals alike, was happy and relieved as the war had now declined to a cold war, the dawn of a good era. Such a transition—is one that had never in the span of thousands of years, happened.
Only a common enemy was able to stagnate the cycle of hatred.
Rex was aware that his situation was getting better, with the other forces pressured.
He was the sole force that demanded and gained respect from others.
But because of those reasons, he knew that the common enemy would undoubtedly be him.
One that strayed from the common beliefs of the world.
Not to mention, a question couldn’t help but appear in his mind with everything going well.
When will the bad time start again? Surely, it would come soon enough, right?
Perhaps owing to his history of always being on the edge of death—being struck by problem after problem, makes him skeptical about the peace he had managed to achieve. It was clear that everything felt unnatural for him.
He was unable to get accustomed to his situation quickly.
Others might not see it, but deep down, he was struggling to stay sane in the head.
His mind was never at peace.
Even when he tries to sleep, his mind is too loud for him to drowse to the dreamland.
Rex had Calidora to thank for giving him a problem—that could somehow distract his mind.
Before Calidora arrived at the castle and after his talk with Queen Shanaela, he already made and sent out official notices to the other kingdoms, about the incoming Honey Moon. It was a notice commanding them to prepare their forces and keep an open eye on the Lunar Bees.
Now that he had more forces to deploy, finding the Lunar Bees should be easier.
Lying on the bed, Rex glanced to the side and found Calidora was already meditating silently.
She was in a sleeping-like state, detached from her surroundings.
It was said that her grandmother sternly told her to do this when she was pregnant.
Given that female Vampires can only conceive once in their lifetimes, it’s understandable that they approach matters of pregnancy with utmost seriousness. Also, due to that, Rex couldn’t help but wonder if male Vampires were any different than their female counterparts.
And the answer was yes, which came as a shock to Rex.
Had it always been the case, then there should be many Vampire hybrids around.
But Calidora said that all of them got completely wiped out.
Even though she didn’t know much considering her age back then, she knew that Vampires used the Vampire Hybrids as shields when the Ancient Humans were hunting them down to ensure the purebloods survived.
Due to that, she said that Vampire Hybrids should be extinct by now.
Just as he was thinking, the door to his bed chamber was knocked several times lightly.
“Your Majesty, it’s me,”
Upon hearing Flunra’s voice, Rex got out of bed and opened the door.
Exchanging a knowing glance at Flunra, he then asked, “Are the others asleep?”
“Yes, I believe so. I checked on all of them before coming here,” He replied.
With a nod, Rex got out of the bed-chamber, gently closing the door behind him before he, in silence, trailed Flunra to the dining room. Upon arrival—he noticed several elegant glasses on the table accompanied by a decanter filled with a green liquid.
Rex took a seat while Flunra locked the door to the back kitchen where the maids were.
Seems like the two didn’t want anyone to disturb them,
On the other hand, Rex took the decanter and inspected the green liquid inside.
“Are you sure this could have an effect on me?” He asked questioningly.
Flunra nodded his head and went over to beside Rex, “Yes, it’s a special liquid extracted from two thousand years old blackberries, that one of your vassals fortunately found. Some of the places of the Humming Damned Forest, due to a high concentration of cursed energy—made an ideal spot for preservation, added with an amplifier ancient rune, it would surely work”
Listening to this, Rex frowned as enemies might use this on him in the future.
“As long as you let it, of course, you don’t have to worry,” Flunra added, assuring him further.
Nodding lightly, Rex poured a glass for himself, “What’s this drink called?”
“Midnight Wine,” Flunra replied.
Upon hearing this, Rex’s lips curled into a wry smile—a testament to the irony of the situation unfolding in the dead of night—precisely when he was also seeking solace in a drink. He was on the brink of exploding, the anxieties and noises inside his mind had become unbearable—and he really needed one night of actual peace, or else he’d go insane.
Fortunately, he talked with the right person, and Flunra had a solution.
Hmm… the last time I drank was at that VIP train almost a year ago, and now I’m here.
Raising his glass to his eye level, he swirled the content in contemplation.
But as he was about to gulp it in one go, the door to the dining room was abruptly opened.
“I knew something was going on,”
Adhara, adorned in her purple sleeping gown, barged inside with an annoyed expression.
She didn’t seem to be happy with what she was seeing.
“Hmm…?! How could you sense us? I made sure to be meticulous,” Flunra exclaimed in shock.
He was quite sure that nobody would realize what they were doing.
On the other hand, Rex put down his drink gently and shot her a wry smile—also surprised.
“Adhara, aren’t you mad at me? What are you doing here?”
“I am mad at you, but I think that not giving you a chance to explain yourself is not right,”
Taking a seat beside Rex, she put her hand on the table and shoved the drink back towards Rex’s direction, “So—Emperor, I am willing to listen for your explanation, but I hope that you have a really good one…”
Rex leaned back, and under the intense gaze, he sighed and gulped down the drink.
He then began recounting what happened between him and Calidora.
A moment later.
“It didn’t happen consciously? So basically, Calidora raped you”
“No- yes? I don’t really know, it was fuzzy back then, and the moon is influencing me”
Even though he tried to remember what had happened that night, Rex simply couldn’t, it was as if his memory of that night was wiped out. Normally, when he goes berserk, he still retains some semblance of awareness and is able to know what he did.
But this time, for some reason, he couldn’t recount anything.
It felt like that part was an empty spot in his head.
Regardless of how hard he was trying, he could simply recall nothing of that moment.
Just then, seeing him struggling, Adhara pulled him into her embrace.
“If you’re telling the truth, then it can’t be helped, so don’t stress about it,” She said gently.
Avoiding a situation where he was trapped alone with Calidora should be prioritized, but that was not possible with the situation with the Fifthborn. Rex had his plan, and to abandon that plan was akin to letting the others die.
So avoiding being with Calidora is not something he could easily avoid.
She was angry, really angry and jealous that Calidora was bearing her lover’s child, but there was simply nothing Rex could do. It was simply bad luck what happened to him. Also—in this moment, Rex seemed to not be proud of what he did.
Beating him more than this would be too much.
“Do you remember? When you are dealing with the Atkins, I also did this to calm you down,”
“Flunra is here, stop talking about my dark moments”
“Hahah~ You are going to drink with him, so you’re already planning on showing him already,”
“Tch! You should’ve stayed in bed”
Opening up to Adhara turned out to be way more effective than he initially thought.
As the others were basically ignoring him, there was this choking feeling in his chest as there was a lot that he wanted to say but couldn’t. However, with Adhara taking the deliberation to be understanding, he felt much better, and the burden he carried within was eased.
Now that the moment calls for it, Adhara is the one who consoled him during his dark times.
She was a part of his strength, and he was glad to have her around.
Just like that, the regular banter turned steamy as the two began kissing passionately.
Realizing this, Flunra could only look down, respecting their privacy.
For a moment there—the two forgot his presence before Adhara was the one to snap out of their moment at the realization. “Flunra is here—Rex. You’re making things awkward for him, you know that, right?”
“Don’t worry about me, I am used to this,” Flunra replied, bowing slightly.
Upon hearing this, Adhara and Rex could only smile wryly as they remembered Flunra’s role.
He was a guardian with thousands of years of experience, this must be nothing for him.
Returning to their conversation, Adhara asked, “So, what are you going to do with Calidora?”
“I couldn’t leave her for now, the baby was not at fault, and it needs a mother. Maybe I’ll see how it goes between her and Evelyn—the two hated each other so I’ll start from there,” Rex replied, he already put some thoughts into this.
Although it was hard to swallow, Adhara decided to nod her head.
Regardless of what their situation was, Rex couldn’t abandon Calidora, and that’s a fact.
Not to mention, if the child was born and is a hybrid of a Vampire, a Werewolf, and a Human, then there must be some complications that would arise. As far as they are concerned, right now, the child might be in extreme danger from birth.
“Okay, now that we got that out of the way. What’s with the drinking?” Adhara asked.
She hovered to smell the green liquid and pulled away instantly as the scent was very strong.
“Don’t drink that, Lady Adhara. Only the Alpha could drink that,” Flunra intervened.
It was too potent of a drink to be drank normally, even Flunra himself couldn’t drink the wine.
Rex hesitated to open up, but he decided to drink more so that he was able to say what was inside of his head, truthfully. He was having trouble with the peace—not to mention that Rex didn’t have the time to grieve for Edward.
His friend was trapped in the Chaos Realm, of course, that fact haunted him severely.
Desperate or not, he couldn’t help Edward with his current strength.
He needs to be way stronger than his current self.
…
Meanwhile, back to Linthia.
Currently, she is reading the complaints from the resources center.
She had a good amount pile of papers on her desk.
Seated within her modest office that was recently built, adorned with ornamental flora—her attention was piqued as the door creaked open. Stepping into the room were the city guard from earlier and the Orc he had mentioned.
Putting the papers down, Linthia looked at the two and found that the Orc was shivering.
It seemed like he had gone through something horrifying.
“What is your name, Orc?” She asked.
Upon hearing this—the Orc slightly bowed and went straight to the point, “Me name’s Gruk, an’ forgive me fer bein’ blunt—but I’s part o’ da crew sent to sweep da field of battle o’ dem corpses an’ salvage da usable gear,”
Linthia’s eyes widened when she heard this, she never instructed the Orcs to help.
Regardless of that, she signaled for the city guard to leave her office.
Only then that she tell Gruk to continue, “I’s got grim tidings from da dispatch, cap’n.”
“What bad news?” Linthia asked, her expression turned serious.
However, before Gruk could report, the entire place suddenly shook violently.
It was an earthquake, a powerful one at that.
“What’s happening?”
