The Innkeeper

Chapter 2523: Good day

  • Next Chapter

For a very brief moment, Lex’s system lost its connection to the System Network before promptly regaining it. When the Midnight Inn disappeared, even the network could no longer actively reach it, but the system had its own inbuilt protocols for such things.

Since the network couldn’t reach it, the system actively sent out certain signals which connected to the network the moment they left the realm. These signals did not leave any traces, and did not mean that the system could now be tracked through them. After all, the designer of the system was very thoughtful and already anticipated a situation where a systemholder may be in hiding and achieve a truly monumental way of hiding.

Tracking that host would leave a vulnerability in his defenses which was contrary to the goal of getting the most entertainment.

So after a brief moment of disconnection, the system came back online. But that is not all it did. No, it reconnected with the System Network and graced him with the beautiful and familiar sound of a notification. In this case, Lex already knew what that notification was for.

Emergency Quest Completed: The host has discovered that systems can hide from universal detection by entering a realm fused with a Primordial Realm Seed Lotus that cultivates the Regal Embrace.

Reward: Fate level reward token!

Remarks: If you really, really tried, could you have found a method less replicable than this?

Reading that remark from his system put an even bigger grin on his face than the one he already had. In truth, there was one other method he could try to hide the system which was to master the Masterless technique - or at the very least improve his mastery over it. He was certain that once he was a pro at it, he could even hide his system from being detected.

The reason he didn’t opt for that solution right now was because even if it hid his system, his realm was still vulnerable!

Lex put down the pen and put away the inkwell. Writing the letter could wait - he would first make use of the token.

Oh man, Lex almost wondered if someone else in the universe was having a really bad day on his behalf because he was having a really good day for once.

"Okay, system, I really need a System Reboot token, or something that’ll let me completely control the teleportation capabilities of the Inn - like completely control them, not partially control them like the methods you handed me before," said Lex, feeling a little cheeky.

The system, naturally, did not respond, but that didn’t matter. Lex had noticed long ago that the systems usually gave him what he wanted if he really needed it.

It was unusual to ask for a token while using a token, but it was what it was. Lex activated the Fate level reward token immediately, not waiting any further. With one major issue resolved for him, it would be wonderful if he could address his second one as well.

As soon as he activated the token, his interface popped up and showed him his reward options. There were three.

System Reboot Token

A system reboot token does not reboot the entire system - it refreshes the system quest progress to begin from the lowest level. All existing quests, features and penalties remain active even after using Reboot Token. New system features may or may not be unlocked over the course of completing the new series of quests. Only recommended in case of faulty system performance.

Otherworld Fragments

Fragments of a Primordial realm that was destroyed known as Otherworld - the first realm to establish cross universe, inter-realm teleportation. The potential in these fragments cannot be quantified for they could hold tremendous opportunity, only if the owner is capable enough to find them.

Script of Ascension

A preserved script from Ascension - its worth and contents are entirely unknown.

Lex blinked, and read through them. The first two rewards clearly had something to do with his request, but the third one was completely random. Of course, there was also the possibility that the third one had something to do with his request, but he would need to discover how and why himself.

It possibly granted an even greater benefit than either of the first two, but it was a risk - a risk Lex had no intentions of taking at the moment. For now, he needed the System Reboot Token.

It was more or less exactly what he needed, and the system description itself stated that it held the possibility of unlocking new features. It was also worth noting that Mary mentioned that the difficulty of the quests would be reset, and would grow systematically as he completed quests.

That was something he was looking forward to, because these days any quest he got was a long term one which would take years, decades or even centuries to complete. That was messed up - how was he supposed to wait that long for the dopamine hit of a completed quest.

Okay, Lex didn’t actually need that hit, but he also wouldn’t say no to it either.

Lex immediately selected the token. The fragments of the Otherworld seemed incredibly interesting, but maybe for another time.

"Mary, I got my hands on a System Reboot token. Is there anything I should know before using it?" Lex asked, sending his voice directly to her. She’d been his assistant long enough that the sudden message did not interrupt or bother her.

"Well, you’ll be getting a lot of really basic quests in the beginning with low reward ceilings, but I recommend you complete them with the highest possible quality or rating you can manage. That will only increase the hidden ranking the system has of you."

Of course his system ranked him - it even ranked itself so why would it be surprising that he was ranked too. Lex almost wanted to crack a joke about being a Divine ranked system user with a broken Divine rank system, but restrained himself.
