Chapter 43: Chapter 43: Awakening

A heavily armored, matte-black transport hummed to a halt directly outside the front iron gates of Sunshine Home, its reinforced hydraulic suspension hissing softly as it settled against the curb.

"Priority delivery for Mr. Eric," the uniformed courier announced through the external intercom speaker before stepping onto the pavement, an insulated security lockbox clasped in his gauntleted hand.

"That’s me," Eric said, trotting down the freshly painted front porch steps.

"Biometric confirmation and digital authorization right here, please."

The deep, rumbling idle of the massive security vehicle had naturally drawn curious eyes from inside. The front door clicked open, and the children came tumbling out onto the porch one after another, their faces pressed against the wooden banister.

"Big Brother Eric, what is that giant truck?" young Alex called out, leaning over the handrail with wide eyes. "Did you order an armored cannon?"

"Nothing dangerous, guys. Just an official delivery from the Association," Eric chuckled, waving a hand to reassure them.

Raising his left wrist, Eric aligned his silver smartband with the courier’s handheld terminal. He pressed his thumb against the biometric scanner, authorizing the direct transfer of the subsidized three-hundred-thousand-credit fee.

*BEEP.*

With the transaction verified, Eric accepted the heavy, lead-lined security case. With a crisp, professional nod, the courier climbed back into the transport, engaged the transmission, and rumbled away down Elm Street.

Lily trotted down the porch steps, tilting her head as her round eyes fixated on the cold metal container. "Brother, what’s inside? Is it sweet treats?"

Eric grinned, crouching down to gently tap her nose with a fingertip. "Far from it, little one. It’s an extremely bitter, awful medicine."

Lily’s face instantly scrunched up in pure horror. She let out a tiny, dramatic shriek, spun on her heels, and bolted back toward the house. Mark and the twins immediately burst into howls of laughter, chasing her through the hallway in a noisy game of tag.

Once the entryway settled into quiet, Eric looked down at the cold container in his grip.

Attempting a breakthrough inside a creaking wooden house surrounded by sleeping children was out of the question. If the ambient shockwave flared during the condensation, the unbridled mana tremors alone could shatter the windowpanes, splinter the floorboards, and cause severe spiritual shock to unawakened mortals. The isolated, shock-absorbent suites of the cultivation center were mandatory.

He carried the parcel upstairs and waited until twilight when the front door latch clicked and Emily returned from her shift at the diner.

"Sis, step in here for a moment," Eric called softly from the dining room.

When Emily walked in, hanging her coat on the peg, Eric withdrew a heavy linen pouch from his subspace and set it gently atop the polished oak table. He pulled the drawstring loose, parting the fabric to reveal a dazzling, crystalline heap of over sixty high-grade Mortal mana stones harvested from the canyon Gorgefiends.

"Take these," Eric said. "They’re for you and Jade."

Emily froze, staring at the radiant, jewel-toned crystals as her breath caught in her throat. "E-Eric... these are high-grade cores! Every single one of these fetches thousands of credits on the open exchange! I can’t possibly accept this."

"You definitely can, Sis," Eric insisted with a warm, steady smile. "I hunted every single one of them myself in the rifts. It didn’t cost me a single coin."

"That’s all the more reason why I shouldn’t take them!" she protested, her hands hovering nervously over the shimmering pile. "You risked your life fighting monsters for these."

"Listen to me, Sis," Eric softened his voice, looking directly into her eyes. "These stones are completely useless to Coal now that he’s stepped into Soldier Rank. His core won’t even react to Mortal-grade mana anymore, and offloading them for extra pocket change we don’t need right now would just be a waste. You’re sitting at Level 5, and Jade is at Level 7. If you feed these high-grade cores to Jade and absorb the cultivation feedback across your bond, both of you can easily reach the late or peak Mortal Stage. When I leave for the academy trials next month, knowing you’re strong enough to protect this house will give me complete peace of mind."

Emily looked down at the glowing stones, her fingers curling against the hem of her apron. A soft tremor shook her shoulders, and a silent tear traced down her cheek.

Ever since awakening an F-rank talent and contracting an E-rank Leafjade Cat years ago, she had quietly swallowed her grief, accepted her mediocre ceiling, and abandoned all personal dreams of martial cultivation to scrape together enough coins to keep the orphanage alive. But having the tangible bridge toward the late Mortal realm laid out right in front of her struck a deep, forgotten chord in her heart.

"Sigh... if you put it that way, Eric..." Emily wiped the corner of her eyes, a radiant, tearful smile breaking through her shock. "I’ll take them. Thank you."

After sharing a lively, warm dinner of stew and fresh bread with Emily and the children, Eric grabbed his canvas duffel and set off into the cool evening air.

Arriving at the Riverdale Cultivation Center, he booked a Standard Cultivation Chamber, entered the fortified room, and engaged the heavy magnetic deadbolts with a satisfying thud.

Dropping cross-legged onto the woven rush mat in the center of the slate floor, Eric unlatched the courier’s outer container. Inside rested a polished mahogany case inscribed with intricate silver stabilization runes. He released the clasps and lifted the lid.

Cushioned on black velvet sat a single, luminescent azure pill, humming with a serene, chilled vapor.

Eric picked up the *Mana Stabilizing Pill*, inspected its flawless, translucent surface for a brief heartbeat, and tossed it into his mouth, swallowing it whole.

*GLUG.*

The medicinal compound dissolved instantly on his tongue into a rush of cool, liquid silk that cascaded down his throat and settled straight into his chest.

Within seconds, a resilient, elastic film of alchemical energy blossomed across the inner lining of his Mana Heart, coating every chamber wall and meridian root with a soothing, indestructible buffer.

Simultaneously, a potent catalyst within the pill sparked the internal compression.

*BOOM!*

The saturated, gaseous mist within Eric’s chest began to violently contract. Under tremendous, inward-crushing gravitational pressure, the swirling clouds accelerated into a tight, screaming vortex.

His meridians flared with intense heat, stretching, widening, and hardening to accommodate the dramatic spike in kinetic density. A deep, grinding ache radiated through his bones as the profound phase change triggered a final cellular purge, thick, blackish impurities oozed out through his skin pores, carrying away the last biological constraints of mortal limitations.

Then, at the absolute eye of the raging spiritual storm, the phase transition occurred.

*Drip.*

A single droplet of crystal-clear, radiant liquid mana formed at the vortex apex and fell, splashing gently into the basin of his Mana Heart.

*Drip. Drip.*

The violent storm subsided as the remaining gaseous mist compressed, leaving behind a tranquil, shimmering pool of true liquid mana circulating smoothly through widened, reinforced conduits.

Eric drew a sharp, frigid breath deep into his lungs and slowly opened his eyes.

The air felt cleaner. His perception was razor-sharp. Every muscle fiber in his body hummed with condensed, explosive vitality.
