The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire
Chapter 294: Pressure and Flame
The first mature drake crashed through the eastern opening hard enough to tear one of the iron braces loose from the wall. Metal shrieked as the bracket twisted free, and several workers scattered from the upper walkway before the creature’s shoulder slammed into the railing. The drake was larger than the juveniles from the hatchery tunnels but smaller than the brood guard that had thrown Darius through stone. Its dark scales were scarred from years of heat, and the orange glow beneath its throat pulsed brighter as it forced itself into the pressure chamber.
The second drake came directly behind it.
Then Kael heard the third.
The fourth remained farther back, its claws scraping stone beyond the opening while something else moved behind it.
The armed strangers reacted with the speed of people who had fought here before. Two rushed toward the eastern walkway with hooked spears. Another dragged a heavy chain from beneath a worktable and locked one end around an iron floor ring. The broad-shouldered man who had confronted Kael drew a wide-bladed sword and pointed toward the upper channel.
"Do not let them spread into the lower room."
Galahad watched the movements for half a heartbeat, then made his own decisions. Whatever these people were doing beneath the Caldera and whatever problem might exist between them and Kael, none of it mattered if the drakes reached Derren or ruptured the pressure system.
"Darius, center. Sera, high platform. Iris, watch the second entrance and the machinery. Milo stays near Derren unless the chamber starts failing. Prince with me."
Milo was still holding the damaged steam pipe together with thin bands of mana. Sweat ran down his face, and the spell around the metal flickered each time the chamber shook, but he still managed to look offended.
"Unless the chamber starts failing?"
Galahad drew his sword. "More than it already is."
"That qualification does not comfort me."
The first drake inhaled.
Kael’s System reacted instantly.
[Combat Analysis]
Thermal buildup detected
Primary target orientation: lower central chamber
Warning: pressure machinery within projected discharge path
Kael’s attention snapped toward the huge relief wheel they had just managed to open. If fire struck the mechanism directly, the metal might warp or the gate could jam again. They would trade one danger for another.
"Keep its fire away from the relief gate!"
The broad-shouldered stranger looked toward him sharply, but Darius was already moving. He stepped into the drake’s line of sight and released a controlled burst of Aura. The pressure was not as broad as what he had used against the juveniles. This was concentrated and aggressive, a sudden invisible impact against the creature’s head.
The drake turned.
Exactly enough.
Its flame swept across an empty section of stone instead of the pressure machinery.
Heat blasted through the chamber. Several workers ducked behind the iron supports while Sera fired from above. Her first arrow struck the side of the drake’s jaw. The second entered the thin membrane beneath one eye. The beast jerked its head upward, and Galahad used the opening to close distance.
He did not attack the armored forehead.
He went for the leg.
His sword cut behind the front joint. The drake staggered, and Kael came from the opposite side with Ice running along the edge of his blade. The ambient heat tried to eat through the magic almost immediately, but he only needed it to last through one strike.
The System flashed.
[Magic efficiency: reduced]
Recommendation: localized application
Kael had already learned that lesson.
He struck the wounded joint.
Frost spread into the cut.
The drake roared and slammed its tail sideways.
"Prince!"
Kael ducked.
The tail passed over him.
The armed stranger with the broad sword took the impact instead.
Not directly.
He raised his weapon and braced.
A dense layer of Aura covered his arms and shoulders. The tail struck, and he slid backward several feet across the stone, boots scraping hard enough to throw sparks. He did not fall.
Kael noticed.
So did Darius.
The man was not ordinary.
The stranger shoved the tail aside and looked toward Kael with irritation.
"You could have warned me."
Kael stared at him.
"I was busy ducking."
Milo’s voice came from across the chamber.
"That was reasonable."
The stranger glared at Milo.
Milo smiled weakly and continued holding the pipe together.
The second mature drake entered the room.
It did not charge the fighters.
It went for the workers.
Iris saw it first.
"Left!"
A young worker beside the secondary wheel froze as the drake climbed over the railing.
Iris sprinted across the walkway, caught the back of his coat, and threw both of them sideways. The drake’s claws struck where the man had been standing and tore three deep grooves through the wooden platform.
The worker scrambled backward.
Iris did not.
She rolled beneath the creature’s wing and slashed across the thinner skin near its underside. The wound was shallow, but it forced the drake to turn toward her instead of the machinery.
Sera fired.
One arrow struck the wing membrane.
The second hit the same hole.
The drake screamed and tried to spread the wing.
It tore wider.
"Again!" Iris shouted.
Sera was already drawing.
The third arrow punched through.
The damaged wing collapsed against the drake’s side.
The creature could still fight.
It could no longer easily climb or launch itself across the chamber.
That mattered.
The first drake lunged toward Galahad.
Darius intercepted.
Sword met claw.
The impact sent a vibration through the iron walkway beneath them.
Kael’s System immediately reacted.
[Structural warning]
Repeated high-force impacts transferring into pressure support frame
Local integrity declining
That was the problem with fighting here.
Everything was connected.
The floor.
The gates.
The pipes.
The pressure channels underneath them.
A powerful strike in the wrong place could kill more people than the drakes themselves.
"Darius! Keep the heavy hits off the central supports!"
Darius shifted his stance without looking back.
The broad-shouldered stranger heard too. "Why?"
Kael pointed toward the thick iron pillars beneath the walkway.
"The frame is taking the impact."
The man looked once.
Then changed how he fought.
That surprised Kael more than an argument would have.
He did not demand proof.
He adjusted.
The third mature drake appeared at the eastern entrance.
Then stopped.
It sniffed the air.
The fourth remained behind it.
Milo frowned.
"That one is not joining."
Galahad looked toward the entrance while blocking a claw from the first drake.
"Why?"
Milo’s eyes narrowed.
"Mana."
Kael looked toward him.
"What?"
The mage nodded toward the third drake.
"There’s something wrong with the energy around it."
Milo released one hand from the damaged pipe.
The mana holding the metal joint weakened.
Sera saw it.
"Milo."
"I know."
He returned his hand to the pipe.
The third drake took one step forward.
Its throat did not glow.
Instead, faint red lines pulsed across its chest and neck in a rhythm unlike the natural fire buildup Kael had seen in the others.
The System reacted.
[Magical anomaly detected]
External energy residue present
Pattern does not match natural drake thermal cycle
Source: unresolved
Kael felt something cold in his stomach despite the heat.
External.
Not natural.
"Galahad. That third one has something on it. Magic, maybe."
Milo called across the chamber, "Not maybe."
Everyone glanced toward him.
He strained against the pipe for another second before continuing.
"It has been altered."
The broad-shouldered stranger’s expression changed.
Just slightly.
Kael saw it.
So did Iris.
Galahad noticed more than either of them.
"You know something."
The stranger turned toward the third drake.
"Later."
Galahad’s voice hardened. "That answer is becoming unpopular."
The first drake attacked again.
Conversation ended.
Darius stepped inside the claws and cut across the throat seam. The wound opened. The drake recoiled and tried to breathe fire.
Kael’s System marked the buildup.
[Thermal discharge imminent]
Kael raised his hand.
Not a wall.
He formed a concentrated wedge of Ice against the drake’s lower jaw.
The creature released fire.
The ice shattered almost instantly.
But the angle changed.
Flame blew upward instead of forward.
Darius moved beneath it.
His sword struck.
The drake’s throat opened.
Its fire sputtered.
Galahad finished the creature with a thrust beneath the skull.
The body collapsed across the walkway.
The impact made every nearby pipe shake.
Kael winced.
[Structural strain increased]
"Move the body off the support!"
The broad-shouldered stranger grabbed one side of the dead drake.
Darius took the other.
Milo stared at them.
"You are both deeply unreasonable."
Together, they dragged the carcass several feet toward the outer stone platform.
The difference was immediate.
The central frame stopped groaning.
Then the second drake attacked Iris.
It had adjusted to the damaged wing.
Instead of trying to climb, it lowered its body and rushed her.
Iris did not retreat straight back.
She moved toward the pressure wheel.
That looked suicidal.
Until Kael saw what she was doing.
The drake followed.
Its injured wing dragged across the stone.
Iris waited until the last possible moment, then slid sideways beneath the heavy chain the strangers had anchored earlier.
The drake’s damaged wing caught beneath it.
The creature twisted.
The chain snapped tight.
The hook bit into the floor ring.
Momentum turned the drake sideways.
The scarred stranger who had first guided them into the lower works—now fighting near the left support—reacted immediately. He seized the free chain, wrapped it once around another ring, and pulled.
The drake became trapped between the two anchor points.
Iris looked at him.
He looked at her.
Neither spoke.
They both pulled.
Sera fired into the exposed throat.
Once.
Twice.
The drake tore at the chain.
The anchor groaned.
Galahad reached them and drove his sword into the wound.
The creature collapsed.
The chain survived.
Barely.
Milo looked over.
"That was disturbingly cooperative."
Iris wiped blood from her blade.
"Temporary."
"Good. I was worried we were making friends."
The third drake entered.
The magically altered one.
Everything changed.
The creature moved wrong.
Too quickly.
Its first step cracked stone.
The second sent it directly toward Darius.
There was no hesitation.
No caution.
No animal assessment.
It charged him as if something had stripped away every instinct except aggression.
Darius raised his sword.
The drake hit him.
He blocked.
The impact pushed him backward farther than the first mature creature had.
Kael’s eyes widened.
The System flashed.
[Threat adjustment]
Physical output exceeds expected mature specimen baseline
Muscular overstrain detected
Behavior: externally stimulated / unstable
Warning: target may disregard self-preservation
There.
That made it more dangerous.
A normal creature would protect an injured limb.
This one might tear itself apart to keep attacking.
"Darius! It doesn’t care about hurting itself!"
The commander shifted immediately.
Instead of contesting force, he redirected the next claw strike past his shoulder. The drake overextended and slammed into the stone floor.
Its own front leg twisted badly.
It did not react.
It kept moving.
Milo’s expression had become completely serious.
"That is not natural."
Sera looked toward him.
"Can you tell what was done?"
"Not while I am holding this pipe together!"
The pipe gave a violent shudder beneath his hands.
One of the metal bands cracked.
Milo cursed.
Kael looked toward him.
The System responded.
[Pressure joint failure approaching]
Estimated failure under current stress: imminent
They were running out of time.
The drakes were no longer the only problem.
"Milo, let the pipe go."
He looked at Kael like Kael had suggested throwing Derren into the lava.
"I would prefer not to explode."
"The relief gate is open now."
"Yes, and?"
Kael focused.
[Pressure distribution updated]
Primary relief route functioning
Damaged secondary pipe remains hazardous
Localized rupture likely
Recommended action: clear immediate area
"It is going to rupture anyway. Everyone around that pipe needs to move."
Milo looked at the workers nearby.
Then at the pipe.
Then at Galahad.
Galahad made the decision.
"Clear left side!"
Workers moved.
Milo kept holding the pipe until the last person crossed behind the stone support.
Then he released the spell.
"Everyone appreciate this."
The pipe burst.
Steam exploded outward.
The pressure wave filled half the chamber.
Milo threw up a small angled barrier and redirected the worst of it toward the empty upper wall.
The spell shattered.
He stumbled backward and landed hard on one knee.
Sera was there immediately.
"Milo."
"I am alive."
"Can you stand?"
"Emotionally?"
She grabbed his arm.
"Physically."
"With resentment."
She pulled him upright.
The broad-shouldered stranger looked toward Milo.
For the first time, his expression held something resembling respect.
"You are stronger than you look."
Milo breathed heavily.
"You are less charming than you look."
The stranger stared at him.
Milo nodded.
"I meant that."
The altered drake roared.
Its broken leg had begun swelling.
The scales along its chest were cracking.
Red light leaked through the splits.
Kael’s System updated again.
[Instability increasing]
External magical stimulation forcing unsustainable output
Possible catastrophic organ failure
Kael looked toward Milo.
"Can you interrupt the magic on it?"
Milo stared at the creature.
"Maybe."
"You just said you were empty."
"I said many things today."
"How much do you have?"
Milo considered.
"Enough to make one very bad decision."
Darius heard.
"Save it."
Milo looked toward him.
"For what?"
Darius did not answer.
The fourth drake finally entered.
Normal.
Large.
Aggressive.
Now the chamber had two threats in front of them.
The altered drake fighting Darius.
The fourth turning toward the workers.
Galahad immediately split the response.
"Darius, Kael, hold the altered one. Sera, Iris, with me on the fourth. Milo stays central and supports whichever side breaks."
Milo straightened.
"That assignment assumes I contain miracles."
"It assumes you are useful."
Milo stared at him.
"Manipulative."
Galahad was already moving.
The fourth drake lunged at the nearest worker.
Iris intercepted its path by throwing a knife into the floor directly in front of its eye.
Not to injure.
To make it flinch.
That gave the scarred armed man time to hook a chain around its front leg.
The broad-shouldered stranger moved with him.
Two strangers.
Galahad.
Iris.
Sera above.
They began pulling the creature away from the machinery.
On the opposite side, Darius fought the altered drake without using his full strength.
Kael understood why.
The central platform would not survive it.
This was where the mission finally felt different from a normal monster hunt.
They could not simply kill harder.
Everything had consequences.
The drake struck Darius’s guard.
He slid backward.
Kael came from the side and drove Light into the creature’s eyes.
The drake barely reacted.
The System flashed.
[Pain response suppressed]
Visual disruption duration reduced
Kael changed immediately.
Do not blind.
Disorient movement.
He cast Light low across the floor instead, creating a brilliant flash against the polished black stone.
The reflection struck from below.
The drake’s head jerked.
Only half a second.
Enough.
Darius cut the already damaged front leg.
The limb finally collapsed.
The creature fell.
Kael used Ice along the chest cracks.
The sudden cold spread through overheated scale.
Several plates split.
The System flashed.
[Thermal stress successful]
Then the drake’s body convulsed.
Milo saw it from across the room.
"Back!"
Everyone near it moved.
The drake’s chest erupted.
Not a huge explosion.
A burst of heat and magical pressure.
Darius threw Aura outward.
Kael added a concentrated Ice shield.
The combined defense caught the worst of it.
Fragments of scale struck the barrier.
One cut Kael’s cheek.
Another bounced from Darius’s shoulder guard.
The altered drake collapsed.
Dead.
Not because they had cleanly defeated it.
Because whatever had been forcing its body beyond its natural limits had finally destroyed it.
Kael stared.
That mattered.
A lot.
The System recorded it.
[Observed phenomenon]
Artificial enhancement can increase short-term drake output
Observed cost: severe physiological instability
Further analysis requires evidence/source material
Kael’s expression hardened.
Someone had done that.
He did not know who.
Not yet.
Across the chamber, the fourth drake was still alive.
Sera’s arrows had opened one side of its neck. Iris had cut the rear tendon. Galahad kept its head pointed away from the workers while the armed strangers used chains to restrict the front legs.
Milo looked at Kael.
"You two finished?"
"For now."
"Excellent. We are accepting donations."
Kael ran.
Darius followed.
The fourth drake saw them coming.
It inhaled.
Milo raised one hand.
A small force spell struck the jaw from beneath.
The mouth snapped shut.
The flame discharged internally for half a second.
The drake recoiled violently.
Milo stared at his hand.
"That was all I had."
Sera fired.
Her arrow entered the throat while the scales were still open.
Darius reached the creature next.
One strike.
Not full strength.
Precise.
The blade severed the damaged tendon beneath the jaw.
Galahad finished the opening.
The drake collapsed.
The chamber went quiet.
Not peaceful.
Quiet.
Steam hissed from the broken pipe.
Workers groaned.
Someone coughed.
A chain rattled as one of the armed strangers released it.
Milo slowly sat on the floor.
"No."
Sera looked at him.
"No what?"
"No more drakes."
"That is not something you control."
"I am setting boundaries."
Kael wiped blood from his cheek.
The cut was shallow.
His shoulder hurt.
His back hurt.
Darius’s breathing was heavier again.
The broad-shouldered stranger had blood running from one forearm where a scale had cut through his sleeve.
Galahad looked around the chamber.
"Casualties?"
One worker raised a hand.
"Burned arm."
Another had been knocked down but was standing.
The man Milo had saved from the steam rupture looked shaken but alive.
The healer shouted from near Derren.
"He is still stable."
That was the most important report.
Galahad nodded.
Then his expression changed.
He looked toward the altered drake.
The chamber followed his gaze.
Milo stood again reluctantly.
"Give me a minute."
Galahad looked at him.
"You have one."
"Generous."
The mage crossed toward the carcass.
Kael followed.
So did the broad-shouldered stranger.
Milo crouched beside the cracked chest.
He did not touch immediately.
Instead, he held one hand several inches above the scales.
His expression changed.
"This was definitely done to it."
Galahad approached.
"Magic?"
"Yes."
"What kind?"
Milo shook his head.
"Not a normal enhancement spell. Something was introduced into its mana flow."
Kael looked toward the cracked chest.
"Monster core?"
Milo glanced at him.
"Possible."
The broad-shouldered stranger said nothing.
Kael noticed.
Galahad noticed too.
Milo pointed toward one of the glowing cracks.
"There is foreign residue. I need tools to say more."
The armed stranger finally spoke.
"You will not find the answer standing over a corpse."
Galahad looked at him.
"You sound certain."
The man’s expression closed again.
"I know these tunnels."
"That was not what I said."
The stranger looked toward Galahad.
For several seconds, neither moved.
Then shouting came from the eastern passage.
Not drakes.
People.
One of the workers ran toward the opening.
Another armed man appeared moments later, breathing hard.
"Lower west gate is failing."
The broad-shouldered stranger turned.
"How long?"
"Could be minutes."
"What about the pressure line?"
"Rising again."
Kael’s System flashed almost simultaneously.
[Environmental Alert]
Pressure relief insufficient for current geothermal increase
Additional subsurface movement detected
Local stabilization window narrowing
The Caldera was not giving them time to investigate.
Again.
Galahad looked toward Derren.
Then the altered drake.
Then the strangers.
"East route?"
The broad-shouldered man shook his head.
"Not from this level."
"You said lower crossing."
"It still exists."
"Then we take it."
The man studied him.
"You are determined."
Galahad looked toward Derren.
"I have someone to bring home."
That answer ended the argument.
The broad-shouldered stranger looked toward the far western corridor.
"Then you need to move before the next pressure cycle."
Galahad pointed toward the altered drake.
"We are taking a sample."
The stranger’s head turned sharply.
"No."
There.
First direct refusal.
Galahad’s expression did not change.
"Yes."
"That body stays here."
"Why?"
No answer.
Milo looked between them.
"Ah."
Kael glanced toward him.
"What?"
Milo smiled faintly.
"Now diplomacy is interesting."
The stranger’s hand moved toward his sword.
Darius stepped forward.
Not threatening.
Not yet.
The room changed anyway.
The other armed people noticed.
So did the workers.
Galahad did not draw.
He simply looked at the man.
"If you know why that drake was altered, tell us."
Silence.
"If you do not know, then you have no reason to stop us examining it."
The stranger’s jaw tightened.
Milo whispered to Kael, "That was annoyingly good."
Kael nodded.
The stranger finally lowered his hand.
"One fragment."
Galahad did not smile.
"Iris."
She was already moving.
Iris cut a small piece of cracked scale from near the drake’s chest, then used cloth to collect a hardened fragment of the strange residue beneath it.
Kael’s System reacted.
[Evidence acquired]
Altered drake residue sample
Analysis: incomplete
Further examination recommended
Good.
Something real.
Something they could bring back.
The broad-shouldered stranger watched Kael.
Then said quietly, "You keep collecting things you do not understand."
Kael met his eyes.
"That is usually how understanding starts."
For the first time, the man almost smiled.
It did not reach his eyes.
The chamber shook.
Hard.
Every lantern swung.
A metal support screamed somewhere below them.
Milo looked toward the ceiling.
"Wonderful conversation. We should survive it elsewhere."
Nobody disagreed.
The expedition regrouped around Derren while workers rushed toward the failing western machinery. The armed strangers divided, some staying behind to help with the chamber, others preparing to move deeper.
Galahad looked toward the broad-shouldered man.
"You are guiding?"
The stranger shook his head.
"One of mine will."
Galahad raised an eyebrow.
"One of yours?"
The man realized what he had said.
Too late.
Milo noticed.
So did Kael.
Galahad did not press immediately.
Instead, he asked, "And who exactly are yours?"
The stranger looked at him.
Then toward Kael.
Then at Darius.
For a moment, Kael thought he would refuse again.
Instead, the man reached up and tapped the narrow iron insignia on his chest.
"We are Iron Vanguard."
The name settled over the chamber.
Not because the words themselves were frightening.
Because they finally gave the unknown symbol a meaning.
Milo looked toward Kael.
"Well."
Kael glanced at him.
"What?"
"We finally got a complete sentence."
Even Darius smiled faintly.
The broad-shouldered man did not.
Galahad repeated the name once.
"Iron Vanguard."
"Yes."
"And your name?"
The man studied him.
Then answered.
"Later."
Milo closed his eyes.
"We were so close."
The floor shook again.
This time nobody laughed.
The armed man turned toward the western corridor.
"Move. The next level will not wait for introductions."
Galahad looked at his party.
"Then neither do we."
They lifted Derren.
Iris took the front.
Sera checked her remaining arrows.
Milo stood with visible reluctance and almost no mana left.
Darius rolled one shoulder despite the pain in his ribs.
Kael secured the residue sample beside the other evidence.
The System remained active at the edge of his vision.
[Current mission condition]
Recovered survivor: alive
Confirmed deceased adventurer: high-confidence identification
New organized faction identified: Iron Vanguard
Altered drake evidence acquired
Caldera instability: increasing
Recommended priority: extraction / continued evidence preservation
For once, Kael agreed with every word.
They entered the western passage while the pressure chamber shook behind them, carrying a living survivor, evidence from a dead adventurer, and the first physical proof that something beneath the Caldera was pushing drakes beyond what their bodies were meant to survive.
Whatever came next, the mission had stopped being only about finding missing people.
Now they needed to make sure the truth survived long enough to leave with them.
