The bond stopped aching. That was the strangest part; Georgia’s forearm had spent weeks feeling like a bruise driven into bone, but now it hummed, steady and low, settling like metal after a clean impact. Her fingers stayed buried in his ruff. The coat was coarse, warm against her knuckles, throwing heat through her skin regardless of the subzero arena air.

Amber irises held her.

Retreating felt impossible. She named him, the circuit locked shut, and pulling back would break a claim currently tightening around her chest. The cold beneath her free palm vibrated with a slow mechanical tempo, matching her own heart.

Then he shifted.

Something structural broke loose inside him, and the first sharp snap split the arena like dead wood under stress; Georgia caught her breath. The massive black shoulders convulsed, dense muscle reorganizing right under her grip, so she pulled back on pure reflex and dropped her hands to her sides.

She refused to turn away.

The sounds hit hard. Wet, tearing impacts, intimate enough to feel like trespassing; his spine arched high, then caved, black hair receding in patches as the mass beneath churned into new lines. She remembered watching him turn the first time on the ice, when the mark burned into her skin and left her blind to the reality. This was the same violence running in reverse, brutal and exact; bones forced their way toward old alignments with a grinding persistence that hit her throat.

Through the brand on her arm, the impact registered clearly. It was sheer compression, tracking each stage of his strain, the connection translating what she watched into heavy, physical weight. She flattened one hand against the rink surface, keeping her breath measured.

The amber glare broke, faded, and gave way to dark human pupils.

The last dark coat vanished along his wrists. The heavy chest caved downward, dropping its inhuman spread; Puck dropped forward onto the surface on hands and knees, letting out a sharp, wrecked breath that immediately misted the cold air.

He trembled against the ice.

The link in Georgia’s chest shifted, redistributing its tension, and she recognized the finished shift before her mind caught up with the physical change. The line between them locked into his human frame; bare, shivering, kneeling on the rink three feet from where she sat.

He kept his head down.

Shoulders rose and fell against the cold, palms braced on the frost, dark strands falling across his face. The open building stayed dead quiet around them, vibration pulsing faintly beneath the surface, and Georgia remained still.Georgia was already moving. She skipped cataloguing the decision or testing it against the cold, the dark, or the three feet of rink ice separating her from a force she could not fully name yet. When she stood and crossed to him, the frost offered no resistance under her boots; the surface hummed low and steady beneath her soles, level as an iron plate.

Puck’s shoulders shook under the floodlights. Without pausing, she pulled off her jacket, the heavy lining snapping through the bitter air before she dropped it over his bare back. He flinched at the impact, a sharp jolt running through his entire frame, but she kept her grip firm; she smoothed the thick canvas over his shoulder blades and dropped to her knees beside him on the ice.

Then she pulled him against her chest.

He locked up instantly. It was a structural resistance rather than mere surprise, an automatic rigidity anchoring his spine to his jaw as if bracing against an inevitable withdrawal. The jacket barely spanned the width of his frame. Still, she held her ground.

"I’m not leaving," she said.

No answer came. She expected none; his breath remained trapped behind clenched teeth, both palms digging hard into the ice to maintain leverage against the cold surface.

The mark on her forearm pulsed once, a blunt, deliberate throb that sent an internal heat climbing through her ribs. The surge came neither from the rink nor from his skin; the current traveled an established circuit between them, engaging on contact. Leaning in, she pressed her chin against his shoulder.

The lock in his frame held, yet something shifted; a sliver of give entered the line of his back, and she registered the change directly, tracking the physical release of air he had held trapped in his lungs.

"I watched the whole thing," she said, keeping the words low against his neck. "Both times. You think that changes anything? I’m still here."

He stayed silent. Even so, the tremor along his shoulders altered, shifting away from physical shock into an entirely different strain of exhaustion. The bond flared a second time, burning hotter as it traveled the length of her arm; it hit her chest bone with the blunt rhythm of an accelerated pulse.

She tightened her arms across his chest.

"I need you to tell me everything," she said. "All of it. Whatever you’ve been keeping back - I’m not asking you to protect me from it anymore."

The ice beneath them vibrated in one long, low frequency; Puck’s hands finally shifted on the surface, his fingers uncurling as his palms pressed flat against the frost instead of fighting it.

He pulled back just enough to see her clearly, his fingers gripping her shoulders as he carved out space between them. The cold rushed into the gap immediately, biting across damp skin, but Georgia stayed motionless where she knelt.

He scanned her features the way an examiner checks a deep tear, methodical and braced for damage. The floodlights caught the frost on her lashes and the hard set of her jaw, exposing every millimeter while he searched for the inevitable recoil: the second the truth struck bone, forcing the usual sudden panic, the calculated retreat, and the polite excuses people used when they wanted room to run.

Georgia looked back at him. She held his gaze without blinking, refusing to soften her mouth or arrange her features into careful sympathy. The bond in her forearm thrummed with a low, even current between them; her blood kept time with it, steady as the thick ice beneath their knees.

"You mean that," he said, the words flat and stripped down to pure demand. "You’re not saying it because..."

"I say what I mean."

He checked his breath, but the mist still dissolved between them in ragged bursts.

"People say things when they’re trapped," he countered, watching her for any tremor of doubt. "Then the room opens up. Are you going to stay standing when it does?"

Georgia cut right through the space he had established, reaching forward to wrap both arms around his chest and pulling him tight with an unyielding grip that offered no concessions. He seized instantly, the familiar defensive reflex locking the muscles along his spine rigid under her palms, yet she remained planted against him, resting her chin firmly against his shoulder.

"Tell me the rest," she said against his shoulder. "Every piece of it. I want the whole truth, without any filters or shields."

The rink hummed beneath their weight; a deep, mechanical tremor traveled through her shins and settled behind her ribs, locking into cadence with the mark burning on her skin.

"You mean that," he repeated, sounding like someone staring down coordinates that proved his calculations entirely wrong.

She leaned back just far enough to meet his eyes.

"Have I ever lied to you?"

"No," he rasped.

A fracture showed in the iron line of his jaw; the tension did not break so much as give way under sheer endurance, like an overloaded frame finally realizing the threat had passed. The bond flared once between them, sharp and blindingly bright, before leveling into a constant heat that spread through her chest and warmed the air between them.

He kept staring, tracking every breath she took, and she held his gaze across the silence because she would never give him a reason to doubt her again. Outside, the timber stood frozen in the dark. Inside the arena, the ice maintained its cold, rhythmic pulse, keeping count for both of them.
