Chapter 80: Chapter 80 The negotiation begins 1

Talia’s POV

The silence stretched between us like a rope pulled tight.

I could feel it pulling, stretching, and ready to snap. One wrong word and everything would fall apart. One wrong move and the rope would break, and I would be left standing alone in the cold, with nothing to show for it. I took a breath, slow, and steady, because I would not be the one to break first.

Alpha Stone sat on his throne, with his gray eyes fixed on my face. He was waiting, testing, and watching to see if I would flinch, or give up. But I did not.

The fire crackled in the hearth behind him, but the warmth never reached me. The cold in this room was not from the temperature. It was from years of grief and anger and loss. I could feel it pressing against my skin, and it was heavy and suffocating.

I thought about Kaelen waiting outside. I thought about Jax and Silas and Cain, and about the trust they all had placed in me by letting me come here alone.

I knew that I could not fail them.

I thought about my mother. About the way she looked at me before she went back into the fire, and I knew she had believed in me. She had sacrificed everything so I could survive, and I would not let her down.

She did not ever cry, and she did not beg. She just looked at me like she was trying to memorize my face, and like she knew she would never see it again. I had carried that look with me for fifteen years. It was the reason I kept going, the reason I did not give up, and now, it was the reason I stood here.

I took a breath and steadied myself.

I looked up at Alpha Stone, and laid out my first set of terms.

"There would be constant food shipments during the winter," I said. "Enough to feed every wolf in your pack. We would grant you access to Shadowfang’s healers, and you would have enough medicine supply for your sick and injured. And lastly, we would grant the Stoneclaw Pack access to a shared hunting ground along the border, where both our packs can hunt without fear of attack."

Alpha Stone stared at me for a long moment, then he burst into laughter. But it was not a happy laugh.

It was a cold and bitter sound that echoed off the bare walls and filled the empty room, and it was the laugh of a wolf who had heard too many empty promises.

"You think I will accept scraps?" he said. His voice was sharp and hard. "You think I will bow to Shadowfang for a few bags of grain?"

"I am not asking you to bow," I said. "I am asking you to talk."

His jaw tightened, and his hands gripped the arms of his throne so hard that his knuckles turned white. I could see the war raging inside him: the part of him that wanted peace, and the part of him that wanted revenge.

I understood that war, because I had fought it myself, every day in Cresswood, when I had to choose between fighting back and staying silent to survive.

"You have suffered," I said. "I know that, I see it in your eyes, and I hear it in your voice. But suffering does not have to be the end of your story."

"What do you know about suffering?" he spat.

"I know more than you think." I held his gaze, and I did not look away.

His eyes narrowed, and I could see that he did not believe me. But I did not need him to believe me. I just needed him to listen. I had spent fifteen years being dismissed, being ignored, and being told I was nothing.

Through all of it, I had learned to stand still while the world pushed against me. So right now, I would stand still.

"Talk you said?" He leaned forward, and the bones of his throne creaked beneath him. "Your pack has killed my wolves, your pack has stolen our land, and your pack has watched us starve while you grew fat on our resources. And now you want to talk?"

I kept my face calm. "Then what do you want?"

He was quiet for a moment, as his eyes moved across my face, searching for weakness.

Then he told me.

"I want Shadowfang to publicly admit their crimes," he said. "I want your Alpha to stand in front of both packs and confess what he has done. I want compensation for every wolf I have lost, every piece of gold that was taken, every land that had been claimed, and access to every resource they currently have. And I want the border moved, giving Stoneclaw the territory that was stolen from us."

I listened, and I did not interrupt.

The words hung in the air between us, heavy and sharp. I could feel the weight of every wolf he had lost pressing down on my shoulders, and I could feel the hunger of his pack clawing at my chest.

I realized that this was not just a negotiation. This was a test. He was testing my resolve, my patience, and my ability to stand firm without breaking.

But I would not break.

I thought about Kaelen’s voice in the study, teaching me to listen for what people were not saying. Alpha Stone was not just asking for land and gold. He was asking for respect, and he was asking to be seen as an equal, not as a beggar. And I could give him that.

My heart was pounding hard, but I kept my face still.

"That is a lot," I said.

"That is what I rightfully deserve," he answered.
