Chapter 252: Chapter 252 The dead land

Talia’s POV

We moved deeper into enemy territory, and the silence pressed down on me like a weight.

I could feel it in my ears, in my chest, and in the way my heart seemed to beat slower with every step. It was not a peaceful silence, it was the kind that waited, and that watched.

I looked around as we moved, and saw that the land was dead.

"I have seen dead things before, I have walked through battlefields and stood over graves, but this is different," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "This land did not just die, it was killed, drained of everything that made it living, and I can feel the echoes of what was lost here, like the land itself is still mourning what Malachai took from it."

The trees were black and twisted, with their branches reaching toward the sky like grasping fingers. The ground was cracked and dry, and nothing grew here. No birds sang, and no animals rustled in the underbrush.

It was as if the land itself had been drained of life, leaving nothing but hollow echoes and empty spaces. The only movement was the slow sway of the dead trees in the cold wind.

There was only the sound of our footsteps and the whisper of the wind.

I walked beside Kaelen, with my hand in his. I could feel the magic pressing against my skin, cold and dark. It was like walking through a fog, that was thick and suffocating.

I could feel it coiling around my ankles, trying to slow me down, and to make me turn back.

"It is like walking through deep water, like every step takes more effort than it should, and I can feel the magic trying to pull me down, to make me sink into the darkness and never come back up," I said, my voice strained with the effort of pushing forward. "But I will not let it win, I will not let Malachai’s darkness swallow me whole, because I have come too far to let him stop me now."

Kaelen said nothing. He just held my hand, and walked step by step with me.

The magic that I kept feeling in the land grew stronger as we kept walking, but I pushed through it.

"He knows we are here," I said.

Kaelen looked at me. "Malachai?"

I nodded. "I can feel it. He knows." a chill ran down my spine. "I thought coming here would be the hardest part, that once I crossed into this land, everything would become clearer and I would know exactly what I was facing," I said, and my voice was barely steady as I looked out at the twisted trees and the dead ground.

"But now that I am here, now that I can feel his magic pressing against my skin like a second layer of skin, and now I realize that I did not understand anything at all. I thought I was ready for Malachai, and I thought I had prepared myself for whatever he would throw at me, but standing here, and feeling the weight of everything he has done to this land, I know that I was wrong." I paused, with my hand tightening around Kaelen’s.

"I was not ready, and I am still not ready, but I am here, and I am not turning back, because my mother has been waiting for me for fifteen years, and I will not let her down again just because I am afraid of what I might find." I took a deep breath.

I said all of it with certainty, even though I wished I was wrong. The magic was too strong here, and felt too personal. It was like Malachai had left his mark on every inch of this land, waiting for me to step into it.

Piper walked beside us. "Can you feel him? Or just his magic?"

I thought about it for a moment. "Both," I said finally. "His magic is everywhere, but I can also feel him, like a presence watching from the shadows. It’s as if he is waiting for us."

"His magic," I continued. "It is everywhere. It is in the air, in the ground, and in the silence."

Jax muttered something under his breath. "This place is creepy. I have never felt anything like it."

I looked at him, and I saw the unease in his eyes. He was trying to be brave, but even he could not hide the fear.

Silas shook his head. "That is because it is not natural. Malachai did this. He corrupted the land."

I thought about the village, the altar, and the fire. This was what Malachai did. He destroyed everything he touched, leaving nothing but ash and darkness in his wake.

I looked at the dead trees, and I felt the cold settle into my bones. "He wants us to know we are not welcome." I said in a soft voice.

"I can feel his presence in the air, in the ground, and in the way the silence presses against my ears," I said, my voice trembling slightly. "It is like he is standing right behind me, watching every move I make, and waiting for me to stumble so he can strike, and I hate that he has that power over me, that he can make me feel this afraid without even being here."

Kaelen squeezed my hand. "Then we prove him wrong."
