Chapter 157: Chapter 157 The battle for the Stronghold 1
Talia’s POV
(Readers discretion are advised)
The battle raged around me like a living storm.
I had never seen anything like it. The sky was dark with smoke, and the ground was slick with blood. The screams of the dying, mixed with the roar of the flames, and the air was thick with the smell of burning flesh.
Everywhere I looked, there was death. But I could not afford to stop, and I could not afford to feel. So I had to keep moving.
Swords clashed, wolves snarled, and rogues screamed as they fell. The air was thick with smoke and dust and the metallic smell of blood. Everywhere I looked, wolves were fighting, dying, and killing.
But I did not stop, because I could not take that risk.
I moved through the chaos, with my fists swinging, and my body aching. A rogue lunged at me from the left with his claw, but I ducked under his swing and drove my elbow into his throat. He dropped to his knees, gasping for air, but a shadowfang warrior finished him off.
Another came from the right.
This one was faster than the first. His claws raked through the air, missing my face by inches. I felt the wind of his strike against my cheek, and I knew that if I had been a second slower, I would be dead. But I was not dead, I had dodged in time, and I was still standing.
I spun and kicked his knee. He fell, and I stomped on his chest and kept moving.
Kaelen was beside me now.
His presence was steady and strong. Even in the chaos, even in the blood and the screaming and the fire, he was solid, and he was my anchor.
I could feel his movements through the bond, the rhythm of his breathing, and the pulse of his heart. We were connected in a way that went beyond words.
We were two wolves fighting as one.
We fought back to back, with our movements synchronized. He took down a rogue with a single swing of his sword, and I blocked a claw aimed at his side. He grabbed my arm and pulled me out of the way of another attack, and we moved together like we had been fighting side by side our whole lives.
"East wall!" a voice shouted. "They are breaching the east wall!"
I looked up. Silas was there, with his sword flashing, and his face covered in blood. He was holding the line, but barely. Rogues were climbing over the bodies of their fallen, still pushing forward.
"West forest is swarming!" another voice called. "Cain needs reinforcements!"
Kaelen’s jaw tightened.
I could see the weight of the battle pressing down on him. He was not just fighting for himself, he was fighting for every wolf in this stronghold. He was fighting for the elders in the safe rooms, the pups hiding in the darkness, and the warriors bleeding in the dirt.
He carried all of them on his shoulders, and I could see the strain of it in the lines of his face.
His gray eyes swept across the battlefield, as he was calculating, thinking, and planning.
Then Jax appeared beside us.
His face was streaked with dirt and sweat, and there was a gash on his arm that was still bleeding. But he was still standing, he was still fighting, and he had not given up. None of them had given up, and that was what made us different from the rogues. We had something to fight for.
Jax’s sword was dripping with blood, and his chest was heaving.
"The safe rooms are secure," he said. "Mother and pup are safe, Piper and Nora are in the healers’ wing, all pack members that need to get to safety, have been to the safe house, and I am ready to fight."
Kaelen nodded. "Go to Silas. Help him hold the east wall."
Jax nodded and ran.
Kaelen turned to me. "Stay close."
"I am not leaving your side," I said.
Soon the battle intensified.
Warriors released the flaming boulders from the catapults, and the stones soared through the air, trailing fire and smoke.
I watched them arc across the sky like falling stars made of fire. They were beautiful in a terrible way.
Beautiful and deadly, with each one carrying the promise of death. I felt a grim satisfaction as they landed among the rogues, sending them flying, burning, and screaming loudly.
This was not the time for mercy, it was war.
They crashed into the rogues below, sending bodies flying. Screams filled the air as the flames spread across the battlefield.
The light from the fires cast dancing shadows across the field, and down to the forest.
The flames reflected off the stone, turning the courtyard into a hellscape of orange and red. The shadows of the wolves stretched and twisted, dancing like demons in the firelight.
I could barely see through the smoke, but I did not need to see. Because I could feel the enemy, and I could smell their fear.
The heat was intense, and the smoke burned my lungs. But I did not stop fighting.
A rogue came at me from behind.
I sensed him before I saw him, and I spun and blocked his claws with my forearm. Pain shot through me, but I did not stop. I drove my knee into his stomach and slammed my fist, which had my claws out, into his face, and he dropped.
I looked up and saw Finn.
He was different from the scared boy I had carried in my arms. His face was hard, and his eyes were sharp.
