Chapter 136: Chapter 136 The glamour breaks 1
Talia’s POV
The sun had set by the time Kaelen returned.
I heard his heavy and steady footsteps in the hallway before the door opened. Those were the kind of footsteps that belonged to someone who carried the weight of a pack on his shoulders.
The door opened, and he walked in.
His shirt was damp with sweat, and there was dirt on his boots. His gray eyes found me immediately, and the hardness in them softened just a little.
I could see the exhaustion in his face, the lines around his eyes, and the tension in his shoulders. He had been running all day, training to protect the pack, and up, immediately he was called for duty.
And still, the first thing he did when he saw me was soften his gaze, let down his guard, and let me in with his eyes.
I really did not deserve him, but I wanted to.
"You are still awake," he said.
"I was waiting for you." I stood up from the bed. "What happened at the border?"
He walked to the desk and poured himself a glass of water. He drank it in one long swallow, and I watched his throat move.
"It was not an attack," he said. "Cain and the patrols found tracks, like someone had been watching us, but they were gone by the time we arrived."
"Rogues?" I asked.
"Probably." He set the glass down and turned to face me. "But we put extra guards on the border, added more security measures, and tightened the patrol routes. So it should be enough."
I nodded. My heart was pounding, and I thought about telling him the truth tonight. The words were right there, on the tip of my tongue, and I was practicing them in my head repeatedly.
Kaelen, I need to tell you something.
Kaelen, there is something I have been hiding.
Kaelen, the glamour charm...
"Talia." His voice cut through my thoughts.
I blinked. He was standing in front of me, with his head tilted, and his gray eyes were searching my face.
"You are miles away," he said.
"I am sorry," I said. "I was just thinking."
"About what?" he asked.
I opened my mouth to tell him. The words were right there, but before I could speak, he reached out and brushed a strand of hair from my face. His fingers lingered on my cheek, so warm and gentle.
"I know that you are worried about the third trial, but I promise you that we will figure it out tomorrow. I am very tired," he said. "But I do not want to sleep. Not yet."
My breath caught.
"Come here," he said.
He pulled me against his chest, and his arms wrapped around my back. His lips found my neck, soft and warm, and I forgot about the words I had been trying to say.
He kissed me then, slow and deep, and his hands slid down my back. His fingers pressed into my skin, pulling me closer, and I wrapped my arms around his neck, as he kissed my lips.
His lips left mine and trailed down my jaw, my neck, and my collarbone. I gasped, and my fingers curled into his hair.
"Kaelen," I whispered.
He pulled back just enough to look at me. His gray eyes were dark, but soft.
"I need you," he said.
I nodded. "I need you too."
He lifted me easily, and my legs wrapped around his waist. He carried me to the middle of the bed and laid me down gently, like I was something precious.
His hands moved to the hem of my shirt, and he pulled it over my head. His eyes moved across my skin, slow and deliberate, and I felt exposed but not afraid.
"You are beautiful," he said.
I opened my mouth to tell him that it was not my real face, and that the charm was still hiding me. But he kissed me again before I could speak, and the words disappeared.
His hands were warm on my body, and his lips traced a path down my chest, my stomach, and my hips. I gripped the sheets beneath me and let myself feel.
Every nerve in my body was on fire. His touch was gentle, and worshipful, like he was learning every curve, every scar, and every part of me.
When he finally joined our bodies together, I gasped and held onto him. He moved slowly, and gently, and his forehead pressed against mine.
"Look at me," he whispered.
I opened my eyes and looked into his gray ones. They were soft, and full of something I had never seen before.
"I have you," he said. "I am not going anywhere."
I gasped from the heavy flow of pleasure, and I believed him.
The world outside disappeared. There was no trial, no charm, and no fear. Just him and me and the way we moved together, slow and steady, like the tide pulling the sea.
