Chapter 126: Chapter 126 The power grows 1

Talia’s POV

The next morning, I woke up before Kaelen.

I lay still in his arms, listening to him breathe, and I thought about everything I had learned from my mother’s journal. About the Silvertongues, the hunters, and the power that lived inside my voice.

I was the last one.

The words “The last Silvertongue” echoed in my head. I was really the last of my mother’s bloodline, and the last one who could speak and make the world listen.

It was a lonely, and heavy thought, but it was also a powerful one. I was not alone in the world, but I was alone in this, and I had to be ready for whatever may come because of it.

I tried to encourage myself that I could win, no matter what happens, but the words pressed against my chest, heavy and warm at the same time, the more I thought about it.

Kaelen stirred beside me. His gray eyes opened, looking soft in the morning light, and he looked at my face.

"Did you sleep well?" he asked.

"Yes, I slept well," I said.

He kissed my forehead, then got up and went to take a shower. I listened to the water run, and I stared at the ceiling, and I tried not to think about the journal hidden in my mother’s trunk.

When he came out, his dark hair was damp and his jaw was smooth. He dressed quickly, pulling on a black shirt and dark pants, and when he was ready to leave, he stood by the bed and looked down at me.

"A healer will come check on you this morning," he said. "And a servant will bring food."

I nodded.

"Eat," he said. "Especially the fruits."

I nodded again.

He looked at me for a moment longer, like he wanted to say something else. But he did not. He just kissed my forehead again, walked to the door and left.

The room was quiet.

I lay in bed for a long time, staring at the ceiling, listening to the silence.

Then a knock came at the door.

"Come in," I said.

The door opened, and Nora walked in carrying a tray of food. The smell of fresh bread and warm soup filled the room, and my stomach growled.

Behind Nora was Piper.

Piper’s face lit up when she saw me. She rushed to the bed and sat on the edge, and her hands reached for mine.

"You look terrible," she said.

"Thank you," I smiled.

"I mean it. You look like you fought a pack of rogues."

"I fought three," I said. "Close enough."

Piper laughed, but her eyes were wet. She squeezed my hands, and I squeezed back.

Nora set the tray on the desk and turned to me. Her face was warm, and her voice was soft.

"I am glad you are awake, Luna," she said. "We were all worried."

"I am fine," I said.

She nodded, then bowed and left the room, but Piper stayed.

She sat on the edge of the bed, still holding my hands, and she looked at my face like she was trying to memorize it.

"You scared me," she said.

"I scared myself too," I replied.

"Don’t do it again," Piper warned.

"I cannot promise that," I answered, and I made a funny face.

Piper shook her head, but she did not argue. She knew me too well.

We talked for a while. She told me about the whispers in the pack house, about how the wolves were still talking about the fight. Then she told me about Finn, how he was healing, and how he kept asking when the Luna would come visit him.

I told her I would visit him soon.

She told me about Serena. How Serena had been lurking around the healers hall, asking questions about my wounds, about how long I would be bedridden, and about whether I would be weak for a while.

My blood went cold.

"She is planning something," Piper said.

"I know," I said.

"Be careful, Talia," Piper pleaded.

"I am always careful, Piper," I replied.

Piper gave me a look that said she did not believe me. Then she squeezed my hands one more time and stood up.

"I should go," she said. "The healers need help in the hall. But I will come back tonight."

"You do not have to..." I started to say.

"I want to." She cut me off and smiled. "You are my best friend, and I am not leaving you alone." She left before I could argue.

The door closed behind her, and the room was quiet again.

I ate the food Nora had brought.

The soup was warm, and the bread was soft, and the fruits were sweet. I ate everything, because Kaelen had told me to, and because my body needed the strength.

When the tray was empty, I set it aside and lay back against the pillows.

My wounds were aching, but the pain was dull now, not sharp. I could move my arm without wanting to cry, and I could breathe without feeling like my ribs were breaking.

I wondered if that was normal.

I had only been resting for one day. The healers had said I would need at least a week before I could move around. But I was already feeling so much better.

A knock came at the door.

"Come in," I said.

The door opened, and Elena walked in.
