The Heroine is My Stepsister, and I'm her Final Boss
Chapter 685 679: Declaration
The second evening bell sounded across the capital, low and final, rolling out from the palace towers in the same measured cadence it had used for decades.
Atlas stood at the gallery drains with Eli, Lara, and the swordsman. The extraction point remained quiet. No marker light. No vibration through the service conduits. No sound of boots or focus discharge from the tunnels David was supposed to use.
The palace above them had gone strangely still in the upper galleries and strangely busy in the administrative wings, the ordinary evening traffic of clerks and attendants replaced by something tighter and more deliberate.
Eli checked the time again. "He's late."
"He's past late," Lara said. She kept her eyes on the drain mouths and the service openings, weight balanced, hand near the blade at her hip. "If he was delayed by resistance he would have sent a marker. If he was dead we would have heard the alarm or the silence that follows a clean kill. This is something else."
Atlas listened. The sound that reached them was not chaos. It was organization—boots moving in coordinated groups, the metallic slide of new seals being set into old fittings, the low exchange of orders that no longer used imperial forms of address. The takeover had already begun while they waited.
"They've already started the transition," he said.
Eli's jaw tightened. "Then we go in."
They used the same service approaches David had planned to exit by. The western galleries were under new control. White Spire cadres held the junctions, white cloaks clean, focus rods already calibrated to the residual grid.
Brotherhood units secured the outer courts, their armor marked with the temporary authority seals that had replaced the old imperial ones. Imperial colors had been taken down in the main halls and stacked in side rooms like inventory ready for disposal.
No one challenged them at first. The takeover was still focused on systems and symbols, not yet on sweeping every service cut and maintenance corridor. That would come later, once the seat itself was secured.
They reached the contingency archive corridor and found the aftermath.
The door hung open, its lock destroyed by overload. Scorch marks blackened the stone around the frame. A Brotherhood captain lay dead near the threshold, focus rod still in his hand, the discharge pattern on the wall behind him showing he had fired once before the killing blow. Spent focus casings littered the floor.
Blade scars marked the walls in short, precise arcs. The archive itself had been entered and partially stripped—shelves pulled, containment fields collapsed, secondary records either burned or removed.
But the deepest vault stood empty in a way that suggested the contents had left with someone rather than been taken by the attackers. The vault door was open from the inside. The emergency seals showed signs of deliberate release rather than forced entry.
Eli moved through the room once, methodically, reading the sequence of the fight without speaking until she finished. "He was here. He fought. He reached the vault. Then he used the secondary channel."
Atlas examined the conduit entrance at the rear of the vault. The emergency seal had been forced from the outside after the fact. The channel beyond was dark and recently disturbed, the dust patterns showing multiple sets of boots moving downward in a hurry. The residual heat from focus discharges still clung to the stone.
"They followed him in," Atlas said. "Or they were already waiting at the far end."
Lara checked the residual traces of movement without naming the methods she used. "Multiple sets of boots went down. Only one set of imperial-pattern soles. The rest are tower issue. He did not come back up this way."
The swordsman, who had taken position at the corridor junction to watch both approaches, spoke quietly.
"Upper halls are fully under White Spire control. They're not searching for a fugitive. They're inventorying a captured seat. Whatever happened to him, they already consider the matter closed."
Eli stood in the center of the ruined archive and looked at the empty vault for a long moment. "He is not dead in this room. If they had killed him here they would have left the body as proof the reign ended in blood. They took him. That means they want him alive for something."
Atlas felt the cold certainty settle into place. The Wizard King did not need a public corpse. A living emperor who could no longer issue decrees, who could no longer call on the residual bloodline authority that still lingered in the deeper systems, was more useful than a martyr. Alive, controlled, and out of sight was cleaner.
"Then we find where they took him before the Wizard King decides the something is finished."
They withdrew the same way they had entered. Behind them the palace continued its quiet conversion. New seals glowed faintly in the stone. New orders moved through the corridors in low voices. New authority settled into the structure as if the building itself had been waiting for the change.
David was not at the extraction point.
David was not in the archive.
David was no longer inside the castle as anything the old maps could locate.
They spent the next hours searching what remained accessible.
Clara and the wizard worked the outer information nets from a secure node three streets from the palace walls—merchant traffic, Brotherhood movement reports, White Spire cadre rotations, residual grid load shifts.
Nothing listed a high-value prisoner matching David's description. The official channels had gone silent on the subject of the emperor. Unofficial ones spoke only of a completed transition and the need for provincial governors to acknowledge the new seals.
The grain networks were already being re-keyed. The residual grids were being locked under White Spire control. The administrative wings were processing the change of authority as if it were a routine transfer rather than a seizure.
Atlas and Eli went deeper.
They used every service route and bloodline-adjacent access still open to them. The lower prisons were under Brotherhood guard and empty of anyone recent. The cells that had held political prisoners under the old administration had been cleared and reassigned.
The old interrogation levels under the eastern wing had been sealed and marked with White Spire authority, the locks no longer answering to imperial blood. The private medical vaults were stripped of their emergency stores and placed under new seals.
The contingency bunkers showed signs of forced inventory. The sealed family wings—galleries that had once been restricted to the bloodline—had new locks that ignored every key and every residual authority Atlas still carried. By the third hour it was clear.
David was not in the castle.
Eli stood in an empty family gallery that still carried the proportions of the old private quarters. The windows looked out over the inner courts where White Spire cadres moved in disciplined patterns. She spoke without looking at Atlas.
"They removed him from the structure entirely. Not to a public cell. Not to a formal holding. Somewhere the takeover does not have to account for him."
Atlas watched the new seals on the gallery doors. The light they gave off was steady and clean, free of the residual fluctuations that had always marked imperial work.
"The Wizard King does not need a dead emperor to finish the claim. He needs the previous one unable to contest it. Alive, controlled, and out of sight is cleaner than a corpse that creates martyrs."
Lara returned from a sweep of the outer courts, moving through the service cuts without being challenged. "White Spire is preparing a formal announcement. Cadres are clearing the main plaza. Projection arrays are being raised on the palace steps. Whatever they intend to say, they intend to say it where the whole capital can hear."
Clara's voice came through the short-range link a moment later, calm and precise. "Confirmed. The arrays are live. The Wizard King is about to speak."
They did not try to reach the plaza. The risk of exposure was too high and the information value too low. They took a high service terrace on the western side that still gave a clear view of the palace front and the crowd that had been allowed—or directed—to gather there.
The plaza was full but orderly. Brotherhood units held the edges. White Spire cadres stood at the base of the steps. The projection arrays rose without ceremony, their fields stabilizing in the evening air.
The Wizard King's image resolved above the steps, larger than life and perfectly steady. He wore no crown. He did not need one. The palace behind him already carried his seals, the old imperial markers gone from the façade. His voice carried across the plaza without strain, clear and measured, the kind of voice that expected to be obeyed because the systems themselves had already shifted.
"The previous administration has ended," he said. "The seat that could no longer enforce its own decrees has been relieved of the responsibility. Effective immediately, the empire operates under the authority of the White Spire and its allied structures. The corridors, the residual grids, and the grain networks will be stabilized under unified command. The age of divided enforcement is over."
He did not mention David by name. He did not need to. The absence was the point. The previous emperor had become a non-person in the official record the moment the seals changed.
"Those who continue to act under the old seals will be treated as obstacles to order. Those who accept the transition will find that the empire still functions—more cleanly than before. The capital is secure. The provinces will follow. The empire is mine to hold, and I will hold it."
The projection held for a moment longer, then cut. The arrays powered down in sequence. In the silence that followed, the new seals on the palace glowed a fraction brighter, as if the building itself had accepted the sentence.
Eli's hands were closed at her sides. "They have him. And now they have the city."
Atlas watched the plaza empty under orderly direction. The crowd dispersed without incident. The cadres remained at their posts. The Brotherhood units rotated to new positions.
