The Hero System Glitched And Now It Pays Me to Love My Assassin Wives

Chapter 62: Twelve Years of Back Pay Arrived in Four Minutes

  • Next Chapter

Saoirse had her hands inside the second container before anyone could stop her, and she came out with a copper spine two feet long, still warm, and set it on the floor between us.

"It’s not a container," she said. "It’s a receiver."

"Explain it in one sentence."

"He wasn’t going to take your module out." She turned the spine over. "He was going to open the tap all the way and let twelve years hit you at once, and he built this to catch whatever came out the other side of you."

"He was going to do the thing we came here to do."

"He was going to do it to you." She stood up. "We’re about to do it with you. That’s the whole difference and it’s the only one we get."

Lunara had the door. Two of the eleven had the stair. The other nine were carrying a dead man down to the street because I do not leave people in stairwells, whoever they belonged to.

The etching bench was still holding temperature. Saoirse put the plate on it at nineteen minutes past four.

"Sit on the floor," she said. "Not the stool. If you go down off a stool you break something on the way."

I sat on the floor of a workshop that had expelled her, with my back against a cold wall, and put my hands on my knees.

"Zelina."

"I’m here and I’m still against it."

"I know. Stand where I can see you."

She came and stood where I could see her, which took her about four seconds longer than it should have.

Saoirse counted down from three and did not get to one.

The first thing was sound. Not in the room.

[Line closed.]

[Overhead released. 4 points returning.]

[Integrity: 35% ▲ 39%.]

[HERO, brace. Delivery beginning.]

The second thing was the floor going a long way away.

[Line 1. 11 January. Reward: released.]

[Cocina de Campaña. F ▲ F. F ▲ E. E ▲ D.]

[Line 2. Line 3. Line 4. Released. Released. Released.]

[Cuenta de Dedos. F ▲ D. D ▲ C.]

[Ojo de Tasador. F ▲ E. E ▲ D. D ▲ C. C ▲ B.]

Somebody had my shoulders. I could not see who and I could not say so.

[Lengua de Plata. F ▲ D.]

[Mapa de Deudas. F ▲ C. C ▲ B.]

[HERO, seventeen of forty seven delivered. Do not close your eyes.]

I closed my eyes.

The wall behind me was cold and the floor was cold and there was a taste in my mouth of the coin I had held in the yard, which is not a thing a coin does.

Every one of the forty seven arrived with its line attached.

That was the part nobody warned me about, because nobody could have. The rewards did not come as objects. They came as the acts that earned them, in order, at speed, and I had to be in each one on the way past.

A corridor in January and a woman with three books who did not look up.

An apple going into a boy’s hand with two fingers.

A sword going back hilt first.

A bowl of something with a poison in it that I ate anyway while she watched my throat.

A honey jar on a windowsill in the dark and me walking away before anyone came.

Forty seven times. Eighty days of a life I had lived without ever once being told that any of it counted.

Ten of them were the boy with the apple, because I had done that one ten times since January and never once mentioned it to anybody.

[Thirty one delivered.]

[Emperador del Ajedrez. F ▲ B.]

[Thirty nine delivered.]

[HERO, your heart rate is outside what I am able to read.]

[Zelina Flintstone is asking me a question and I am going to answer her.]

[Flintstone: he has two minutes of this left.]

I heard that one. I heard the System use her name, out loud, in a room, to somebody who was not me.

In eighty days it had never called anybody anything but a line item.

[Forty six delivered.]

[Line 47. Yesterday morning. Act: host declined to calculate in front of forty one men. Evaluation: unrated.]

[Reward: unrated.]

[HERO, I do not have a category for this one.]

[I am going to give it to you anyway.]

The last one did not arrive in the body.

It arrived in the accounting, the way a correction arrives, quiet, at the bottom of a page, changing every number above it.

[Sum: 108.]

[HERO, the sum has never gone up.]

I opened my eyes on a workshop ceiling with four faces over it.

Lunara had my shoulders. That was who it had been.

Behind her, three of the eleven had come back up the stair and stopped in the doorway, and none of the three had come inside. One of them was the sergeant who had brought me the boy. He had a hand on the frame and he was not putting weight on it.

"Sergeant."

He did not answer me. He looked at Lunara instead, the way a man checks with somebody who outranks his own eyes.

"He’s talking," Lunara said. "You can come in."

The sergeant came in three paces and stopped again, which is the most honest review I have ever received.

"Say a word," Zelina said.

"Which word?"

"Any word. I need to hear you make one."

"Fifty three," I said.

"That isn’t a word."

"It’s the number of nails in that ceiling and I got it in half a second." I got an elbow under me. "It used to take two."

Saoirse was on her knees at the bench with the plate in both hands and she was not looking at the plate.

"Vaelion. Say the ceiling again."

"Fifty three nails. Nine of them are new, three of them are not iron, and whoever put the three in was paid by weight."

Zelina sat down on the floor of the workshop, which she has never done in her life, in a good dress, in somebody else’s blood.

"That’s Ojo de Tasador," she said.

"That’s Ojo de Tasador at B."

"On a ceiling."

"On anything." I sat all the way up and my hands were steady, which surprised me more than the ceiling had. "Zelina, I can price the argument you’re about to have with me and I’d rather you had it anyway."

"I’m not going to have it."

"You are."

"I’m going to have it tomorrow." She stood and put her hand out and pulled me up, and she took more of my weight than either of us mentioned. "Tonight I’m going to walk you down three flights of stairs and I’m going to be unbearable about it the entire way."

Lunara had already gone to the door. She came back with her sword still out.

"Majesty. The street."

The third terrace of the Tower district holds about four hundred people on a market morning. At twenty five past four it holds nobody.

It was holding somebody.

He stood at the bottom of the outside stair with his hands where we could see them, thin, badly shaved, ink on two fingers, in a clerk’s coat that had been brushed.

He did not come up. He waited until he was sure I could see his face.

Then he took off his hat, of all the things in the world, and held it against his chest, and he called up the stair in the voice of a man reading a line off a page.

"Congratulations, Majesty," Ansel Vosk said. "The account has a bottom again."
