Fracture

The silence after the Queen’s departure was worse than any scream.

Elara remained on the bed for a long time, staring at nothing. The cooling evidence of Lilith’s pleasure still marked her stomach. When she finally moved, it was with the slow, disconnected care of someone walking through a nightmare she could no longer wake from.

The bathing chamber adjoined the room—an oval pool of dark stone fed by gently steaming water that renewed itself through some quiet enchantment. Elara stepped into it without testing the temperature. She sank down until the water reached her shoulders and began to scrub.

Her hands shook so badly she dropped the cloth twice. She washed her skin raw, as if she could scrape away the memory along with the slick residue. Tears mixed with the water, though her swollen eyes had little left to give.

How did I become this?

Where is my power? My sword? My goddess?

Where is my family?

How do I escape this hell?

When she lifted a dripping hand to push her hair back, several long golden strands came away between her fingers. She stared at them. Another tremor ran through her. She pressed the wet hair against her forehead and then, without thinking, struck her own temple with the heel of her palm—once, twice—hard enough to sting.

Get out. You have to get out.

She left the bath, dried herself with clumsy movements, and pulled on the charcoal dress that had been left for her. The fabric clung to still-damp skin. She sat on the edge of the bed, bare feet braced against the floor, and forced herself to think past the panic.

The window was high and narrow, set with dark iron bars. Even if the bars had not been there, the drop beyond was a sheer cliff face swallowed by night mist. No ledge. No hope.

Her gaze fell on the small grooming set left near the bathing chamber: a comb, a vial of scented oil, and a pair of silver scissors meant for trimming hair or thread. Elara’s fingers closed around the scissors. The metal was cool and real. She rose, crossed to the door, and tested the lock for the hundredth time, heart hammering with a new, brittle determination.

I will not die in this room like an animal.

The lock clicked from the outside.

Elara stepped back on instinct, scissors hidden in the folds of her skirt. The door opened a careful hand’s width. Nyx slipped inside like a shadow and eased the door shut behind her, red eyes already searching the dim chamber.

She never got the chance to speak.

Elara lunged.

There was no elegance in it—only the last scraps of a broken hero’s will. She drove the scissors toward Nyx’s throat with every remaining ounce of strength. The point scraped skin. Nyx’s eyes flew wide in shock. For a fraction of a second the younger sister froze—

—then power flared. Nyx caught Elara’s wrist, twisted, and tore the scissors free with insulting ease. The weapon clattered across the stone. In the next breath Nyx slammed Elara back onto the bed, straddling her hips, one hand clamped around her throat, the other already tearing at the front of the charcoal dress.

“You little—!”

Lust and rage warred across Nyx’s face. She yanked the fabric open, bare skin against bare skin, hips already rolling forward in a brutal, instinctive grind—

Then she saw the marks.

Fresh red welts were rising on Elara’s wrist where Nyx had wrenched it. A thin scrape stood out on the side of her neck. Visible. Unmistakable.

Nyx’s entire body locked.

Panic flooded her expression so fast it looked like pain. She scrambled backward off the bed as if burned, chest heaving, staring at the evidence of her own loss of control.

Elara dragged in a ragged breath and spoke before the other woman could recover.

“Get out.” Her voice was wrecked but clear. “Get out right now or I will tell your sister everything. Every night you came here. Everything you did. Everything you wanted to do.”

Nyx’s red eyes narrowed, fear and fury twisting together.

“You’re threatening me?” she hissed. “You’re actually trying to blackmail me with my own sister?”

She took a step closer again, though she did not touch. Her voice dropped, rough with frustrated hunger.

“Tell me the truth. The noises tonight—did she take you? Did my sister finally claim every part of you? Are you still a virgin or did she break you open?”

Elara held her gaze, trembling, and forced the words out.

“No. She didn’t. Not like that.”

Nyx stared, something almost like disbelief flickering across her face.

“Still untouched… but something happened. I can smell it on you.” Her hand flexed at her side. “Tell me what she did. Tell me everything or I swear—”

“I’ll scream,” Elara cut in, raw and desperate. “I’ll scream loud enough to bring the entire wing. Try me.”

For a long, dangerous moment Nyx looked capable of anything. Then the reality of the marks on Elara’s skin seemed to reassert itself. The younger sister’s shoulders tightened. She stepped back, breathing hard, and reached for the door.

At the threshold she paused, not looking at Elara.

“This isn’t over,” she said, voice low and shaking with restrained obsession. “My sister can play her slow games. I won’t. One day—soon—I will have you first. I will fill you with my own seed by magic if I must, and you will carry what I put inside you. Remember that while you still can.”

The door closed. The lock turned.

Elara did not move for several heartbeats. Then the last thread holding her together snapped.

A raw, animal sound tore from her chest. She curled forward on the bed, fists striking her own head, her shoulders, anything that could feel the blows. Her entire body shook as if seized by fever.

“Enough—enough—enough—!” The words spilled out between broken gasps. “I’ll kill you. I’ll kill all of you. The humans who sold me. You. Your sister. Every last one of you. I swear it. I swear on whatever is left of my soul—I will make you suffer until you beg. I will show no mercy. None.”

She kept repeating it, voice cracking into whispers and then rising again, a fractured vow offered to the empty, violet-lit room while her body convulsed with the force of everything she could no longer contain.
