Morning Limits

Lilith woke first.

The low violet light of early morning filtered through the high windows. Elara still slept deeply beside her, one arm tucked under the pillow, golden hair spilled across the black sheets. She wore only the dark bra and panties from the night before. The faint marks of Lilith’s arms and hands lingered on her pale skin—evidence of how tightly the Queen had held her through the night.

Lilith lay on her side, watching.

Part of her still wanted to believe the previous night had been a dream: the ash falling from a clear sky, the human pens, the way Elara had looked at her without fear. But the girl was right here, breathing softly, close enough that Lilith could feel the faint warmth of her body. The calm on Elara’s face unsettled her more than any resistance ever had.

What are you planning?

Elara’s blue eyes opened slowly.

For a moment she simply looked at the Demon Queen staring back at her. Then she glanced down at the faint bruises on her arms and ribs.

“You didn’t do anything to me while I was asleep… did you?”

“No,” Lilith answered.

Elara shifted, wincing. “Then why does my whole body ache? You were holding me too tightly.”

“I used almost no strength.” Lilith’s voice was quiet. “You are simply weak.”

Elara sat up, scanning the orderly chamber and the adjoining bathing room.

“I need to bathe.”

Lilith’s eyes narrowed. “The same trick again? Have you not tired of it?”

“It is not a trick. You will not come in with me. I need to wash.”

“This is my chamber. My bath. You will not bathe alone here.” Lilith sat up fully. “You have been acting strangely. I will not leave you unsupervised in my own rooms.”

Elara met her gaze. “So you insist on bathing with me?”

“Yes.”

A short silence.

Then Elara exhaled. “Fine. We are both women. What I have, you have as well.”

She stood and removed the bra and panties without hesitation, leaving them folded on the chair. The sudden sight of her completely bare—old scars from the dinner, fresher marks from Lilith’s hands the night before—made Lilith’s breath catch for half a second. The Queen rose and undressed in turn, movements more controlled than she felt.

They stepped into the wide bathing pool together. Warm water rose around them. Steam softened the edges of the room.

Lilith spoke first, voice low and sharp.

“Yesterday you deliberately provoked me. Do not do it again. Never speak my sister’s name in that way. Not even once.”

Elara leaned back against the stone edge, water lapping at her collarbones.

“Do you truly believe your sister is so innocent? She is jealous of everything you claim. She wants what belongs to you.”

Lilith’s eyes flashed. “You are trying to manipulate me again.”

“Your loyal dog is in love with you.” Elara’s voice stayed calm. “Thalira. You must have noticed. She looks at you the way a starving animal looks at meat.”

“She is a servant. A tool. What she feels is irrelevant.” Lilith’s tone hardened. “Are you trying to drive a wedge between me and my sister? Between me and my right hand? It will not work.”

Elara moved.

She closed the small distance between them in the water until their bodies nearly touched. One finger rose and pressed lightly against Lilith’s lips, silencing whatever reply had formed.

“Shhh.”

The single sound was soft, almost gentle.

Elara’s blue eyes held hers without blinking.

“I understand something very clearly now. You are more foolish than the humans. The moment I come even a little closer, you become excited. You are obsessed with me from head to toe. And that dog you call your right hand is exactly the same. Now measure it yourself—how dangerous that is.”

She withdrew her finger, turned, and stepped out of the pool without another glance. Water streamed down her bare back as she reached for a towel.

Lilith remained frozen in the bath, lips still parted where the girl’s finger had rested.

Elara dried herself with unhurried movements, then walked to the wardrobe.

“I am tired of always wearing the same dress. May I borrow one of yours?”

“No.”

But Elara had already pulled a dark silk gown from its hanger—one of Lilith’s own—and slipped it over her head. The fabric settled against her damp skin, a little too long, a little too fine. She turned.

Lilith was out of the water in an instant. She seized Elara’s wrist, eyes burning.

“You are pushing every limit I have. Tonight I want you. Enough of this.”

Elara did not pull away. “I told you I am not ready. And you told me you would not force me.”

“Do not twist my words.” Lilith’s grip tightened. “You are a prisoner here. You will do whatever I decide. And I have decided I want you—now.”

She shoved Elara backward. The girl’s body hit the great bed. Lilith followed her down, knees bracketing her hips, hands already reaching for the silk she herself had once worn. Elara twisted, pushing at the Queen’s shoulders.

“Stop—what are you doing—stop—”

The struggle was brief and fierce. Lilith’s mouth found the side of Elara’s throat; her hands dragged the gown upward. Elara’s knee drove up between them, forcing a small distance, but the Queen’s strength was greater.

A sharp knock cut through the chamber.

Both of them froze.

Thalira’s voice came from the other side of the sealed door, carefully neutral.

“My Queen. The morning meal is prepared.”

Lilith’s breathing was uneven. She did not move for several heartbeats. Then she pushed herself up, crimson hair falling around her face like a curtain.

“Leave.”

A pause.

“My Queen, I am waiting to escort—”

“I said leave. Get out of my sight.”

The silence that followed was brittle. When Thalira finally answered, her voice was tightly controlled.

“…As you command.”

Footsteps retreated down the corridor.

In the hall, Thalira’s face had gone rigid. Her gloved hands curled into fists so tight the leather creaked. She walked with measured steps, but the words that burned behind her teeth were anything but measured.

That whore. Because of her, the Queen’s regard for me has changed. I will kill her. I will erase her. I have to erase her.

Inside the chamber, Elara had already slid free of the bed. She stood near the door, the borrowed silk gown falling loosely around her bare feet, waiting in silence for the seal to be lifted.

Lilith remained where she was, chest rising and falling too quickly, staring at the girl who had once again slipped from her grasp.
