Same Night

The ruined chamber still smelled of broken stone and stagnant water.

Elara stood in the center of the wreckage she had made the day before, arms loosely crossed, eyes fixed on nothing. The images from the human pens would not leave her—the swollen bellies, the wet sounds, the way some of the men had not bothered to check whether the bodies beneath them still breathed. Those pictures lived behind her eyes more vividly than the ash that had fallen from a clear sky.

Lilith closed the door behind them and sealed it with a quiet press of power. For a moment she only watched the girl. The unease from the ashfall still clung to her like a second skin, but she forced it down.

“You saw it,” she said at last. “The world you left behind. I showed it to you, and I gave you two choices. You chose me. Accept it. At my side you are safe.”

Elara’s voice came out low and exhausted.

“Because of you.”

Lilith’s brow furrowed. “What?”

“Everything is because of you.” Elara finally looked at her. “You are the one who poisoned this world. You made me watch those disgusting things just so I would obey.”

Lilith stepped closer. Her tone cooled.

“We are back to this again. You blame me for the filth of your own kind. I do not force humans to do those things. You are lying to yourself.” She reached up and gently smoothed a strand of golden hair away from Elara’s face, fingers lingering at her temple. Her voice dropped to a near-whisper against the girl’s ear. “If anyone else stood in my place, you would already be on your knees begging them not to put a child in you. You have been spoiled.”

Elara did not flinch away.

“You keep talking about impregnating me,” she said, cold and clear. “Just because we are both women, you think you have the right? You are disgusting. If you want children so badly, get pregnant yourself.”

Lilith’s eyes widened a fraction—true surprise, rare and unguarded. The retort she had been about to deliver died on her tongue.

Before she could recover, Elara spoke again, voice flat with fatigue.

“I cannot sleep in this wreck of a room. Tell your dogs to put it in order. I am sleeping with you tonight.”

Lilith stared.

A short, disbelieving laugh escaped her. “Ha… are you going to try to kill me again? With another pair of scissors, perhaps?”

“No.” Elara’s answer was quiet and absolute. “I already understood I cannot kill you with a blade.”

Lilith’s expression shifted, searching. “After everything you saw tonight… you are going to submit to me? In my own bed?”

“No.” Elara met her gaze without fear. “We are both women. We will sleep as companions. That is all.”

A slow, dangerous smile touched Lilith’s mouth.

“And how do you know I will not take you in your sleep?”

“If you were going to, you would have done it already.” Elara turned toward the door. “If you do not want me there, give me another room. I am tired of talking.”

Lilith studied her for a long moment, crimson eyes unreadable. Something in the girl’s sudden calm unsettled her more than any scream or struggle ever had. The rain still hammered against the high windows. Somewhere behind her thoughts the memory of falling ash refused to fade.

At last she exhaled.

“Come.”

—

Lilith’s private chambers were vast, dark, and meticulously ordered. The great bed dominated the space, draped in black silk. The moment the door sealed behind them, Elara began to undress without hesitation. She folded the charcoal dress neatly, left it on a chair, and stood for a second in only a simple dark bra and matching panties before climbing onto the bed. She pulled the sheet to her waist, turned onto her side, and closed her eyes as if the matter were already settled.

Lilith remained standing.

She could not read the girl. The rain, the inexplicable ash, and now this strange, quiet compliance twisted together in her chest until she felt almost restless. Slowly she removed her own gown, leaving herself in the same state of undress—black lace against pale skin. She dimmed the floating crystals to a low night-glow and finally slid into the bed beside Elara.

For a while she only watched the slow rise and fall of the girl’s breathing.

Then, carefully, she moved closer. One arm slipped around Elara’s waist. She drew the smaller body back against her own, fitting them together.

Elara’s voice came soft and tired in the dark.

“I know what you are trying to do. You are pretending to be strong so you can pressure me. It will not work.”

She shifted, turning her back more fully to the Queen.

“Do not touch me. Sleep.”

Lilith’s arm tightened instead of releasing. Her breath stirred the hair at the nape of Elara’s neck, already a little uneven.

“You are driving me mad,” she murmured. “Lying next to me like this… half-naked… testing every limit I have left.”

Her hand rose, palm settling over the soft curve of Elara’s breast through the thin fabric of the bra. Fingers flexed once, slow and deliberate.

Elara’s body tensed.

“Stop. Take your hand off me.” Her voice sharpened. “I am leaving.”

She tried to sit up. Lilith’s arms closed around her at once, strong and unyielding, pinning her gently but firmly against the mattress and the Queen’s own body.

“All right—all right.” Lilith’s voice was low, almost strained. “Only sleep. But I want to hold you tightly. That is all.”

A long silence.

Then Elara’s shoulders loosened a fraction.

“…Fine. Do not go any further.”

Lilith exhaled, the sound close to relief. She adjusted her hold so that it was secure rather than possessive, one arm around Elara’s waist, the other beneath her own head. Their bare legs brushed. The night light painted everything in soft violet shadows.

Outside, the rain continued without mercy.

Neither of them spoke again.

Eventually, exhaustion pulled Elara under. Lilith remained awake longer, eyes open in the dark, listening to the steady breathing of the girl in her arms and to the quieter, more troubling rhythm of her own thoughts.

Something had shifted tonight.

She was no longer certain she was the only one who knew it.
