Cracks in the Court

Lilith did not leave her chambers that day.

She sent word that she would take no meals and was not to be disturbed. The servants obeyed without question. Behind the heavy doors of her private wing she worked in silence, pouring power into the ancient stones of the citadel. Layer after layer of binding magic sank into walls, floors, and foundations—subtle enough that most would never notice, strong enough that even a desperate hero with a broken seal would find no easy way out. By late afternoon the entire royal wing felt heavier, as if the air itself had thickened.

Only when the crystals shifted toward deep evening violet did she stop.

Steam rose from the wide bathing pool in her chambers. Lilith sank into the hot water with a slow exhale, crimson hair floating around her shoulders. Alone, the controlled mask slipped. Her jaw tightened.

That little whore.

The memory of the scissors flashing toward her ribs replayed with perfect clarity. The frantic, hate-filled eyes. The broken voice screaming for her death. Lilith had almost admired the sheer, stupid courage of it—almost. Then the anger had settled in, cold and lasting.

She tried to seduce me with that empty compliance, then put a blade in my side.

She dragged a wet hand down her face.

Enough. Tomorrow night I end this game. No more patience. No more measured lessons. I will take her mouth until she understands exactly what she is, and when I am finished she will carry the proof of it.

The water lapped quietly against the stone. Lilith stared at the far wall, eyes hard, already planning the precise shape of the coming night.

Elsewhere in the wing, Nyx stood in front of Elara’s door for the third time that evening.

The seal that met her palm was no longer the simple, personal lock her sister usually favored. It was dense, layered, and cold with power. Nyx pushed harder. The magic did not even flex. Inside, she could sense only the slow, exhausted breathing of someone deeply asleep.

Frustration and hunger twisted together in her chest. She was still testing the edges of the seal when a cool voice spoke behind her.

“What exactly are you doing?”

Nyx spun.

Commander Thalira stood a few paces away, silver braid neat, grey eyes unreadable in the low light. She had approached without a sound.

“Nothing that concerns you,” Nyx said too quickly. “Go about your business.”

Thalira stepped closer. In one smooth motion she pinned Nyx’s right wrist against the wall beside the door, not hard enough to bruise, but firm enough to make the difference in their strength obvious.

“You were looking for a chance to force yourself on the hero,” Thalira said, voice flat. “Did you think I wouldn’t notice? If I tell the Queen, she will peel the skin from your body while you are still breathing. She will not care that you are her blood.”

Nyx’s red eyes flared. “Please. My sister would believe me long before she believed you. The hero is hardly a neutral witness—she would tell Lilith exactly what you’ve been trying to do to her. My sister is not a fool.”

Thalira’s mouth curved in something too sharp to be a smile.

“She would believe me. I am her most loyal dog, and she knows it. Just as she knows what you are.”

Nyx’s free hand crackled with gathering power. “You’re disgusting. You’re obsessed with her. You want the hero dead because she took the attention you think you deserve.”

“Yes,” Thalira answered without shame. “And your sister already suspects it. It changes nothing.” Her gaze drifted over Nyx’s face, lingering. “You look very much like her, you know. Same blood. Same dangerous hunger sitting under the skin like a timed charge. Come to my rooms. I want to taste every part of you. I want you to finish in my mouth until there’s nothing left.”

Nyx’s face flooded with heat. “What is wrong with you? Let me go.”

Thalira’s grip tightened. “You want it. I can smell it on you.”

“Let go of me, you—!”

Nyx lashed out with a sharp burst of force. It should have thrown a lesser demon down the corridor. Thalira only staggered half a step, eyes darkening with irritation, then answered with a heavier surge of her own power. The younger sister’s back hit the opposite wall hard enough to drive the air from her lungs. Before Nyx could recover, Thalira had both of her wrists and was already dragging her down the side passage that led to the commander’s private quarters.

Nyx fought the entire way—curses, bursts of raw magic, a knee driven toward Thalira’s midsection. None of it was enough. The door to Thalira’s rooms slammed shut behind them. A heavy seal dropped into place with an audible thrum.

Thalira shoved her onto the wide bed.

“I don’t want this—get off me—!”

Fabric tore. Nyx’s outer robes gave way under strong fingers. She managed one clean hit of binding magic that locked Thalira’s arms for a few heartbeats, crimson light flaring around the commander’s body.

Thalira’s expression went cold with real anger.

“You want that human whore the same way your sister does,” she snarled, shattering the binding with a violent flex of power. “What do either of you even see in her?”

The rest of Nyx’s clothing did not survive the next few moments. Cool air touched bare skin. Thalira’s magic pinned the younger woman’s wrists and ankles to the mattress in four precise, unyielding points, leaving her stretched and fully exposed. Nyx thrashed once, tested the bindings, and found them far stronger than anything she could break in her current state.

Thalira stood at the foot of the bed, breathing a little faster now, grey eyes moving over the body that looked so much like the Queen’s younger, wilder reflection.

“You even smell like her,” she murmured. “Like my Queen.”

She set one knee on the mattress.

“Calm down. Struggling will not help you.”

Nyx’s chest rose and fell in rapid, furious breaths, red eyes burning with equal parts rage and something darker she refused to name. The seal on the door held firm. Beyond it, the reinforced silence of the royal wing continued unbroken.

And on the other side of several heavy walls, Elara slept on—unaware that the cracks spreading through the court had just widened again.
