I pressed confirm on my glass screen. The massive sum of Favor vanished from my account in a single blink.

The precursor terminal chimed, the melodic note bouncing off the vault’s white walls. A deep hum vibrated through the floorboards beneath our feet.

"The architecture is physically shifting," Damara noted, her ruby eyes tracking the ceiling as the sound traveled upward through the foundation.

"Let’s go see what we just bought," I said, sliding the phone into my pocket.

We hurried up the spiraling staircase, leaving the underground sector behind. Pushing the pantry door open, I stepped out and stopped dead in my tracks.

The narrow kitchen we had left barely thirty minutes ago was completely gone. In its place sat the Grand Culinary Suite.

The room had tripled in size, boasting vaulted ceilings crisscrossed with exposed wood beams. Two massive black granite prep islands dominated the floor, offering more counter space than I had ever possessed. A sprawling six-burner cast-iron stove sat flush against the far wall, radiating a faint, magical heat.

To my left, a walk-in cooling pantry emitted a frosty white mist, preserving crates of fresh produce and hanging cured meats.

I ran my hand across the cold stone of the nearest island. My heart hammered with unadulterated excitement. It was the ultimate chef’s kitchen.

"Master Sam," a polite, familiar voice called out.

Ignis walked slowly through an arched doorway, carrying his feather duster. "The manor’s perimeter has grown considerably. I must formally request an increase in my cleaning supply budget."

"Whatever you need, Ignis," I laughed, overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the upgrade. "Buy out the market."

"Look at this!" Katrina yelled from down the hallway.

We followed her voice past the living room into an entirely new residential wing. Katrina stood dead center in a glass-enclosed sunroom. Late afternoon light poured through the panes, illuminating a wide spread of golden sand covering the floor.

She kicked her boots off, burying her bare toes in the grains. "It’s heated! It feels exactly like a sunbaked rock on the coast." She dropped onto her back, stretching out with a loud, rumbling purr vibrating in her chest. "I’m never leaving this room."

"You’re going to track sand all over the hardwood," Damara warned, smiling.

Sarah drifted past the sunroom, her tall frame moving with elegant curiosity. She pushed open a set of heavy double doors at the far end of the hall. A wave of humid, floral-scented air washed over the corridor.

The botanical garden was breathtaking. Lush green vines climbed the stone walls, blooming with petals that emitted a bioluminescent turquoise glow.

A winding path of river stones led through the foliage, terminating at a waterfall that spilled seamlessly into her steaming hot springs.

Sarah stepped onto the stones, her hair shifting as she took a deep, contented breath. "It feels like a real forest, Sam. The humidity is perfect. It’s completely connected to my domain."

"It suits you," I said, watching her trail a hand over a glowing fern.

Damara found her prize tucked away near the back exit. The Tactical Sparring Room featured reinforced ironwood flooring and walls lined with heavy weapon racks.

In the center, three articulated wooden training dummies stood at attention, humming with faint precursor magic to simulate actual combat movement.

Damara drew a steel dagger, spinning the blade expertly across her knuckles. A dangerous, satisfied smirk rested on her lips. "This will do nicely. You and I have footwork drills to run in here tomorrow morning, Sam. No excuses."

"I wouldn’t dream of missing it," I replied, massaging my ribs instinctively.

We spent the next hour exploring every new hallway, uncovering expanded bathrooms with sunken tubs, enlarged walk-in closets, and hidden reading nooks built right into the bay windows. The sheer joy radiating from the party made the absurd price tag entirely worth it.

By the time we gathered back in the Grand Culinary Suite, the sun had fully set over the jagged peaks of New Haven.

I wasted no time breaking in the new equipment. Pulling a massive slab of marbled beef from the pantry, I laid it out on the stone. I grabbed heavy iron skillets, setting them over the magical burners.

The satisfying sizzle filled the room, accompanied by the rich aroma of rendering fat, crushed garlic, and fresh rosemary.

I chopped a mountain of root vegetables, tossing them in olive oil and sea salt before sliding them into the oven. Next came a thick, savory gravy whisked with pan drippings and heavy cream.

I juggled pans on the magical stove with an effortless rhythm, finally having the space to actually breathe while I cooked. This wasn’t trail rations. This was a feast.

We sat around a newly expanded dining table, the dark wood gleaming under the soft chandelier light. I served up massive plates of perfectly roasted steak, garlic-infused vegetables, and warm, crusty bread dripping with salted butter.

Katrina didn’t bother using a fork. She tore into the beef with absolute savagery, humming happily with every bite. Sarah ate with much more grace, though she easily cleared her plate just as fast.

The tone of the dinner was grounded. The lingering shadows of the rogue mage and pompous demon nobles were entirely banished from the house. We drank rich red wine, pouring heavy glasses and swapping stories about the chaotic brawl in the precursor ruins.

Damara recounted how the rogue mage looked when Katrina threw a defense drone at his head, mimicking the man’s shock with deadly accuracy. Katrina pounded the table, howling with laughter. Elise joined in, a real, genuine sound that carried no lingering anxiety.

"I still cannot believe you shattered a precursor alloy staff with your bare hands," Damara said, swirling the dark wine in her glass. "You’re going to break your own wrists doing that."

"That is what Elise is for," I joked, earning a playful roll of the eyes from our healer.

We settled into the reality that this wasn’t just a temporary base of operations or a halfway house for wayward adventurers. This was our permanent home, built from the ground up by our own hands.

As the night wore on, the heavy food and lingering exhaustion finally caught up with us.

Katrina wandered off to sleep in her heated sand. Sarah retired to her glowing botanical garden, and Damara retreated to her room upstairs after a quiet goodnight.

I stayed behind in the kitchen to wipe down the beautiful granite countertops. The warm ambient light cast a calm, soothing glow across the dark stone. The house was entirely silent, save for the soft, rhythmic sound of my damp rag sliding across the island.

Soft footsteps padded against the hardwood floor.

I turned around to find Elise standing in the arched doorway, wearing a simple, loose-fitting sleep shirt. Her damp hair fell past her collarbone, framing her pale face. The nervous, flinching posture she carried when we first pulled her from that flooded cell was absent. She stood tall, radiating a quiet, undeniable confidence.

"Couldn’t sleep?" I asked, tossing the rag into the deep porcelain sink.

Elise walked slowly into the kitchen, closing the distance between us. "I just wanted to see you for a minute. Without everyone else around to distract us."

She stopped right in front of me, close enough that I could smell the faint scent of lavender soap on her skin. Her bright eyes locked directly onto mine, holding my gaze with absolute certainty.

"You cooked an amazing dinner tonight," she said softly.

"I had a pretty amazing kitchen to work with," I smiled, leaning my hips back against the granite counter to get comfortable. "Are you liking the new house?"

"I love it," Elise replied. Her slender fingers lightly brushed the edge of the obsidian collar resting around her neck. She didn’t touch it with fear or regret. She touched it like a promise. "But the house isn’t what makes me feel safe, Sam."

She took the final step forward, invading my personal space entirely.

She gripped the fabric firmly in both fists, pulling me slightly forward. I looked down at her, struck by the profound shift in her demeanor.

"I used to hold onto you because I was afraid of everything else," Elise whispered. Her breath ghosted warm against my jawline. "I’m not afraid anymore."

She didn’t wait for my response. Elise leaned up, pressing her lips firmly against mine.

The kiss wasn’t hesitant or shy. It was deliberate, warm, and full of agency. The sudden heat blooming in my chest had nothing to do with precursor magic. My hands naturally found her waist, pulling her flush against me as I kissed her back.

The taste of sweet wine lingered on her lips. She let out a soft sigh, her hands sliding up my chest to wrap securely around the back of my neck.

We stood there in the quiet warmth of the grand kitchen. Elise had spent her entire life hiding in dusty archives and rusted cages, a pawn used by monsters masquerading as men.

But tonight, standing in our home, she finally claimed exactly what she wanted.
