The Guardian gods
Chapter 958
Chapter 958: 958
There was a strange, quiet comfort in the sensation. Across a desolate, endless empty space where silence was the only company to be had, the shell had become a companion. It hummed against his ribs with a steady, possessive warmth, urging him toward an integration he consistently refused. To yield to it, to let the consciousness inside the alloy drink him in would shatter his neutrality plan for it, lighting up a beacon bright enough for worlds to notice quickly just like himself
As for how the armor had awakened, Tweet could not truly say. It had rested against him since the day of its gifting, so deeply integrated over the long years that he had slowly forgotten it was there at all, mistaking the heavy plating for the natural contours of his own skin.
That all changed the day a faint, alien brush grazed the edge of his awareness. The birth of the armor’s consciousness had sparked the very breakthrough he needed.
The shell possessed a disconcerting, compulsive nature, an obsessive drive to fit in, to warp and mold itself entirely around its wielder. It was a mirror of its owner, a realization that unnerved Tweet deeply when he first recognized the likeness, as if his own reflection in a dark glass had suddenly begun to breathe on its own.
Yet this unsettling mirror became the cornerstone of his plan. Experimenting with the alloy, Tweet first intended to send the armor down to the world in his stead, acting as a scout to relay the planet’s response back to him. Instead, the armor balked at the thought of parting from him. To his surprise, it fractured its own mass, shedding a copy devoid of true consciousness, a mindless, obedient replica to execute Tweet’s will in its place.
Thus began Tweet’s patient study of the living alloy. He found a planet which he desecended into. In the quiet hours that followed that first separation, the severed fragment flickered into nascent awareness, snapping awake before rocketing back across the ground to re-merge seamlessly with the main suit. There was no malice in the surge, only a pure, unthinking impulse to be one with him, leaping straight into union the moment consciousness sparked.
Tweet tested it further, withdrawing miles away before casting off a second fragment. True to form, the orb drifted in silence until sentience took hold, its metallic surface panning across the terrain like an unblinking eye searching the dark.
The moment it locked onto his distant signature, it bolted toward him, burning through its reserve. Halfway across the gap, its kinetic power sputtered and failed, sending the orb plummeting hard into the ground.
It lacked the juice to close the remaining miles, yet its awareness remained tightly tethered to him. Through the low, steady vibration of the suit against his skin, the armor urged him to stay his hand "Wait and watch"
Tweet obeyed. As he stood back in the quiet expanse, the exhausted orb melted into the earth, sinking beneath the surface as if swallowed whole. Moments later, a slender stem pierced the soil, quickly unfurling into a rigid, metallic blossom.
The moment the flower unfurled, it seemed to exhale an unseen, irresistible magnetism, a subtle airborne calling that rippled through the clearing. Nearby creatures froze, their sense organs twitching in unison as the lingering scent drew them toward the focal point like moth to a flame.
Tweet watched, unblinking, from the far distance.
One of the larger quadrupeds cautiously approached, leaning its sleek head down to inspect the bloom. It drew in a deep, inquisitive breath. Before the creature could pull back, the flower lost its rigid geometry. Its petals collapsed into a viscous, luminescent liquid that surged forward, instantly seeking out the nearest pathway, the creature’s open nostril. In a frantic, fluid flash, the liquid poured inside and vanished.
The second the flower disappeared, the scent dissolved into thin air.
The surrounding creatures snapped out of their trance, shifting with confused, uneasy postures. Sensing immediate danger, they scattered back into the dense flora, leaving their companion behind.
The host creature stood frozen for a fraction of a second before its limbs gave out, collapsing to the earth completely motionless.
Silence settled over the clearing, broken only by violent, rhythmic spasms echoing through the creature’s body. Beneath its skin, an invisible, agonizing internal metamorphosis took hold. Bone shifted, tendons snapped and re-anchored, and its bulky frame reshaped itself with terrifying speed.
From Tweet’s perspective, the life form was was being rapidly sculpted into an organic machine built purely for terrifying velocity.
Extending its consciousness further, Tweet cast his perception deep within the creature’s rapidly shifting anatomy.
The internal mechanics were undergoing a brutal, highly efficient overhaul. Muscle fibers were braiding together into dense, rubbery bands built for high-tensile energy storage, while the vascular system expanded to flush away heat and lactic acid instantly. To sustain such terrifying output over vast distances, its lungs fused into high-efficiency intake chambers.
Yet this biological miracle was not free.
The sudden, violent evolution demanded immense energy, and the host creature was rapidly consuming itself to fuel the rewrite. Tweet watched as its bulk shrank at an alarming rate, the creature’s ribs showing through rapidly tightening skin as its own tissues were cannibalized for raw biomass.
The intelligence within the orb registered the dangerous deficit immediately.
Adaptation was instantaneous. Ribbons of muscular tissue erupted from the creature’s limbs, sprouting into fibrous appendages that lashed out into the surrounding environment. They drove deep into the soil and pierced the stems of nearby alien flora like hyphas. A visible surge of stolen bio-matter, groundwater, and vital minerals rushed upward through the tendrils, pumping fuel straight into the transforming core. The surrounding plant life withered to grey ash in seconds, but the creature’s mass stabilized.
With its raw material secured, the metamorphosis surged to completion.
The tendrils retracted back beneath sleek, armored hide. The creature pushed off the dirt and rose, standing transformed.
Then, its newly reconstructed head snapped toward the horizon. Across miles of terrain and dense canopy, its unblinking gaze locked directly onto the hidden vantage point where Tweet was watching from.
With a violent spray of dirt, the creature’s reshaped claws dug into the earth, and it exploded forward in a burst of kinetic energy. Trees blurred past as it tore across the landscape, maintaining a blistering velocity that defied natural limits. Whenever its internal energy stores faltered, it didn’t slow down, it hunted on the run. Whipping tendrils snared passing fauna and drained local flora mid-stride, instantly converting the stolen biomass into thermal energy and stamina to keep the sprint alive.
For two relentless days, the predator crossed the distance, a nightmare of endless momentum tracking a target miles away.
Finally, the beast skidded to a halt directly before Tweet. Its destination reached, the hijacked organism collapsed to the soil, entirely motionless. Tweet watched as the liquid metal poured out from the host’s pores, pooling on the ground. The strange substance expanded, surging as if gathering mass, before the orb within it suddenly bolted forward. In a fluid, blinding flash, it merged back into Tweet’s original armor, integrating itself seamlessly.
Left behind on the dirt, the creature began to stir.
Tweet kept his gaze fixed on the organism. As consciousness returned, the predatory focus in its eyes dissolved into sheer, unadulterated confusion. It glanced around the unfamiliar clearing, disoriented, its simple mind unable to process how it had arrived here. Panicking, the beast let out a raw, terrified roar and threw itself into a desperate sprint to escape.
It didn’t account for its new body.
The creature’s initial push generated vastly more force than its instincts remembered. The landscape slammed toward it in an instant, and it shot forward straight toward the trunk of a massive tree.
Panic flashed in its eyes, but its newly engineered reflexes took over before its brain could consciously register the danger. Engineered specifically to handle extreme speed, its heightened neural pathways fired in micro-seconds. With zero loss of momentum, the beast pivoted seamlessly, hit the base of the trunk at full tilt, and sprinted straight up the vertical bark into the high canopy above.
High above the canopy, Tweet drifted through the upper atmosphere, watching the creature huddle in the high branches. Even from that distance, the shock in its wide eyes was plain to see, it was staring at its altered limbs in absolute horror. Tweet shook his head with a faint grin, amused by the chaos left in the parasitic orb’s wake, before turning his eyes upward to leave the planet behind.
As he broke orbit into the quiet vacuum of space, the armor began to process and share the records of what had transpired.
The explanation was surprisingly simple, a fundamental, deeply ingrained directive coded into the armor’s core biology. The armor desperately wanted to be whole, to be one with its host, and to serve him as effectively as possible. When fragment orbs were split off, they gained a rudimentary, fleeting will of their own, but their primary drive remained absolute. They instinctively locked onto Tweet’s unique bio-signature, stopping at nothing, hijacking life forms, reshaping biomass, and devouring ecosystems just to return and merge back into the main suit.
