Chapter 955: 955

A sudden spark of eager excitement flared behind Tweet’s eyes. Without a second thought, his hand dipped into the folds of his space-warping garment and pulled out his thick, leather-bound journal, the very ledger where he meticulously cataloged every anomaly, lesson, and strange mechanic of deep space.

He flipped the pages open with a crisp snap, a quill materializing between his fingers as he looked up at the two colossal brothers with a deeply expectant, wide eyed grin.

"If you’ve walked across universes," Tweet said, his voice buzzing with the restless curiosity of a scholar handed an infinite library, "then you must have seen things no world-herald has ever written down. Tell me stories. Which universe had the strangest sky? What’s the most bizarre thing you’ve ever found drifting in the deep dark?"

The younger brother let out a booming laugh that shook the surrounding, the sheer force of his laughter nearly sending Tweet’s floating journal fluttering away into deeper space.

"Listen to him, brother," the playful Driftborn chuckled, leaning his massive chin into his palm with a grin "The little herald carries a book. He thinks the infinite expanse of creation can be neatly filed away in ink and paper."

Despite the gentle teasing, a profound and deep fondness softened the massive eyes of the older sibling. The booming voice rumbled through the dark, carrying the weight of eons. "Let him write, little brother. It is a rare and beautiful thing for a creature to try and cage the boundless in words. Most who cross our path are too busy running for their lives to ask where the road leads."

The older Driftborn shifted his gargantuan weight, settling deeper into the invisible currents of the void as his gaze drifted toward a distant, shimmering tear in reality, a faint membrane separating their current universe from the next.

"If you want stories, young herald," the sibling continued, his voice dropping into a rhythmic, storytelling cadence, "then put your quill to parchment and listen well. We will tell you of the Shattered Crown, a conquered universe where the stars do not burn with fire, but with the crystallized memories of a dead race. We walked across a sky made entirely of silver glass, where every footprint we left behind begged to blossom into a new constellation..."

Tweet’s quill flew across the pages of his journal, scratching out notes and crude sketches at a frantic pace, entirely lost in the mesmerizing tale of the multiverse.

For a long stretch, time lost all meaning in the deep dark. There was only the vast, rhythmic rumble of the brothers’ voices and the furious scratching of ink against paper.

Then, mid-sentence, the storytelling abruptly cut off.

The younger brother blinked, his colossal eyelids shifting, before his gaze snapped down sharply toward the tiny, feathered figure hovering before them. Beside him, the older sibling froze mid-gesture, his massive hand hovering just above the void.

A heavy, abrupt silence settled over the triad, broken only by the faint hum of Tweet’s hovering journal turning pages.

The brothers exchanged a swift, telepathic glance, a sudden, collective realization dawning across their immense features. The playful brother slapped a hand against his thigh in a gesture of mild horror, sending a minor shockwave through the local area.

"By the Unbroken Weave," the younger brother muttered, his voice dropping to a booming whisper that still rattled Tweet’s core. "We have kept you here for sometime, haven’t we?"

The older sibling offered an apologetic grimace, scratching the back of his neck. "We rambled on like old hermits at a crossroad. Forgive us, little herald. You have a purpose, a destination, and a home waiting for your report. We completely derailed your journey with our old tales."

Tweet shook his head sharply, as he snapped his journal shut with a decisive thud. The quill vanished back into the folds of his garment.

"No, waitd, on’t stop," Tweet said, his voice carrying an urgent, honest edge. He let out a breath that materialized as a brief shimmer of frost in the vacuum before dissolving. "You aren’t holding me up. If anything... you’re giving me a reason to procastinate."

The two Driftborn paused, their massive forms hovering motionless as they regarded the small herald.

"To be entirely honest with you," Tweet continued, crossing his arms over his chest in his humanoid form, his tone losing its confident tone and slipping into raw vulnerability, "I am in no rush to get back out there. Every time I step through a threshold, the world’s autonomic immune system latches unto me. I’ve tried all i can in my last few jumps, and I still haven’t figured out how to properly mask my aura from this."

He looked up at the two colossal siblings, his eyes reflecting the distant, swirling colors of the nebulae behind them. "My creator gave me this key, and I carry it because I must. But out there, in the dark, I’m a lost, unsure on what I should do. Here, sitting with you... this is the first time since I started this journey that I haven’t felt hurried, purposeless. So please, if you have more stories of the road, I want to hear them."

A heavy silence settled over the void, stretching out until even the faint hum of distant starlight seemed to quiet. The two Driftborn exchanged a solemn, unreadable look, the playful spark in the younger brother’s eyes dimming into something older and graver.

"We hear your burden, little herald," the older sibling finally rumbled, his voice carrying a deep sorrowful weight behind it. "And we understand the terror of a world’s immune system turning its full wrath upon you. But we cannot lift that weight from your shoulders."

The playful brother nodded slowly, his massive expression softening with genuine regret. "It is not that we lack the power to shatter those barriers or silence the auras hunting you. But we have sworn an absolute oath, age upon age ago, to remain silent observers of the paths we walk. We forge the roads, we witness the travelers, but we never carry their burdens or fight their battles. To interfere with the trials of a world’s survival instinct would break the very weave we are bound to protect."

Tweet felt his chest tighten, a cold wave of disappointment washing over him. The brief sanctuary he had found in their presence suddenly felt fragile, a momentary illusion in a universe that demanded he face its terrors entirely alone. He lowered his gaze, his fingers tightening against the leather cover of his hidden journal.

Seeing the heavy shadow fall across the small herald’s face, a sudden, bright chime broke the heavy air.

"However!" the younger brother burst out, a sudden, booming grin stretching across his face as the playful light flooded right back into his eyes.

The older sibling chuckled, a rich, rolling sound that chased away the lingering gloom. "An oath is an oath, little herald, and we cannot fight your battles. But we are bound by another, far more ancient law, one that the oldest roads demand we never break."

Leaning in so close that their massive faces cast a warm, protective shade over Tweet in the freezing dark, the brothers smiled down at him.

"We are sworn to forge gifts for those who cross our path, sit by our fire, and share tales with us," the brothers spoke in unison, their voices harmonizing into a resonant chord that hummed straight through Tweet’s soul. "And a traveler braving the dark empty-handed is a tragedy we simply refuse to leave behind."

To Tweet’s utter surprise, the two colossal beings shifted in unison, rising from their cross-legged posture in the vacuum with a synchronized grace that defied their impossible scale. Their immense gazes swept across the dark expanse of the void, searching for something hidden within the stellar debris and drift-matter of the sector, until their eyes locked onto a nearby, medium-sized star burning with a steady, amber luminescence.

Without uttering a word of inquiry and without Tweet ever voicing what he secretly wished for or needed, they began to stride toward it. Their steps did not displace space violently, rather the fabric of the cosmos seemed to compress beneath their soles, carrying them across light-years in a matter of heartbeats.

Tweet remained suspended where he was, his breath catching in his throat as he watched them approach the blazing star. Though their hands were large enough to cradle entire planet, they moved with the delicate precision of master artisans. They swept their massive arms outward in wide, sweeping arcs, and from the invisible currents of the vacuum, rare materials began to gather, unformed material too small for their gargantuan fingers to comfortably hold.

Yet, with careful, practiced motions, they scooped up these microscopic grains and tossed them directly into the heart of the star. Then, towering over the blazing sphere, both Driftborn dipped their massive hands straight into the roaring, superheated plasma of the stellar core. The star flared brilliant white around their plunging arms, serving as their crucible, as they began to rhythmically shape and hammer the invisible raw components together within the nuclear fire, forging a gift born entirely of their silent understanding.
