Chapter 442: Chapter 166: Of Course, Cheung Fun Must Be Made and Eaten on the Spot
Having grown up in Xiangjiang, Feng Yaoyang had traveled all over the country for business over the years and found that the food in many places didn’t suit his palate.
It was all thanks to Ah Wu being by his side that no matter where he went, Feng Yaoyang was never without a plate of stir-fried beef ho fun.
"President Feng, you should be able to trust Boss Su’s skills," Ah Wu said with a smile. "Someone who can win a world cooking championship definitely has some real talent."
"Mm... but a food street project isn’t like opening a restaurant. No one can master hundreds of different snacks. I’m asking him to make thirty, and I’m afraid that might be a bit much for him. As for the flavor and authenticity, that will be up to you to taste and judge."
Feng Yaoyang had happened to meet Ah Wu back in the nineties while doing business in Yue Province. At the time, Feng Yaoyang was having morning tea with a business partner at a time-honored establishment and found the boat congee he was served to be unexpectedly delicious.
After making a special visit to the chef, he spent a large sum of money to poach Ah Wu and bring him to his side.
Having been by President Feng’s side for over thirty years, Ah Wu understood his boss well. "Very well. But if they’re southern snacks, I can critique them to some extent. If they’re northern snacks, I’m afraid I might not be able to judge them accurately."
"No matter." Feng Yaoyang waved his hand. "Go and try again to see if you can replicate that egg fried rice. Tsk, why have I been thinking about that rice so much lately? How could its garlic aroma be so rich..."
Ah Wu was dumbfounded.
’How long has it been? It has to have been over a week.’
For the past few days, Feng Yaoyang hadn’t wanted anything for his three daily meals. He only wanted to eat that egg fried rice.
Ah Wu had even gone out of his way to visit that shop on the food street, paying for a copy of the surveillance footage from the entrance for that day.
For the past week, he had meticulously followed Su Chen’s steps from the video, one by one, to the point where he had almost achieved a perfect replication!
But every time he served up the Golden Garlic Egg Fried rice, Feng Yaoyang would take just one bite and then say, "This isn’t the flavor I remember from that day."
This left Ah Wu feeling thoroughly frustrated.
"Fine. I’ll do my best to replicate it." After speaking, Ah Wu stood up and left the room.
Once he reached the hotel kitchen, the old chef, who had been immersed in Cantonese Cuisine for nearly forty years, viciously tossed his ladle into the wok.
’If Boss Su’s snacks aren’t up to par tonight, he shouldn’t blame me for being merciless with my critique!’
Immediately, Ah Wu took out a portion of overnight rice, prepared a bowl of garlic-infused water, and finally cracked two eggs.
He took a deep breath.
’Damn it, what’s the big deal with this Golden Garlic Egg Fried Rice? Is it really that delicious?’
He refused to believe he couldn’t crack it.
CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!
Before long, the aroma of egg and garlic wafted from the kitchen. Ah Wu tasted a bite himself.
’It just tastes like egg and garlic. I wouldn’t call it delicious, but it’s not bad either.’
’Looks like another failure.’
’There’s no point in bringing a failure to President Feng.’
He practiced in the kitchen for the entire afternoon, not stopping until just after five o’clock, when Feng Yaoyang sent someone to the kitchen to fetch him.
Only then did he stop.
He quickly washed up to get rid of the cooking smells, changed into a clean set of clothes, and then followed Feng Yaoyang toward the Development Zone.
"I wonder if Boss Su can make a Golden Garlic Egg Fried Rice tonight. I want to see it for myself, right there on the spot."
In the car, Ah Wu was still preoccupied with the egg fried rice.
Feng Yaoyang burst out laughing. "Forget it. That egg fried rice isn’t sold at Delicious, which means Boss Su probably won’t make it. We’ll just have to see when we get there."
As they made their way to Delicious, the restaurant itself was getting busy. There was only one person who wasn’t, and that, of course, was Boss Su.
"Boss! The guests will be here in five minutes! Aren’t you going to start?" Zhang Li stood guard at the door to Su Chen’s kitchen. She was assigned to help him here today.
"What’s the rush! Snacks are meant to be made and eaten fresh! Would they taste any good if I made them in advance? Let’s wait until they get here," Su Chen said, sitting in a third-floor kitchen and watching the people come and go outside.
Today was the first day they had reopened, and to his surprise, there had been a near-constant stream of customers on the third floor since four in the afternoon.
"Gimme some of those sunflower seeds." Su Chen held out his hand, asking for a handful.
The two of them, separated by a window, started cracking them. CRACK, CRACK, CRACK.
"Oh? Excuse me, what kind of food does this station serve?"
Zhang Li tossed her seed shells into the trash can. "This station isn’t selling anything right now. Only those other two stations are open today!"
The stations run by Zhang Heping and Shi Qi, respectively.
The two of them specialized in home-style dishes. Liu Ahbao was in charge of the second floor, so he wasn’t helping out on the third.
The customer who asked let out a disappointed "Oh," but not before craning his neck to peek through the window a few times.
"They clearly have a bunch of ingredients laid out, but he says they’re not selling anything. That guy isn’t being very honest. You think he’s slacking off while the boss is away?"
"Probably. There are all sorts of people nowadays. Let’s find their boss later and report him!"
The two youngsters whispered furtively for a few more moments, then hurried over to get in line at Zhang the Second’s station.
"Did you hear that, Boss? They’re going to report you for slacking off!"
"Tch!" Su Chen stuffed a few more sunflower seeds into his mouth. "Wouldn’t they just be complaining to me about myself? What’s the damn point of that."
"Hey! They’re here!" Zhang Li saw two middle-aged men enter the third-floor area and immediately recognized President Feng from that morning.
The moment Feng Yaoyang and Ah Wu stepped onto the third floor, they were clearly taken aback by the scene before them.
"President Feng, why are there so many people eating? Weren’t we supposed to have a private tasting of custom snacks?" Ah Wu was clearly displeased.
