Chapter 299: Seeking guidance
Chapter 299: Seeking guidance
A man walked down a long, dark corridor, his steady footsteps echoing off the polished marble of the grand palace.
Bluish magical crystals glowed on the walls at regular intervals, casting flickering shadows across the tall columns and bathing the passage in a pale, spectral light.
He was tall, noble, and strong, with black hair, golden eyes, and an arrogant face—yet one worthy of such arrogance.
His attire was luxurious: an elegant, form-fitting suit and a red half-cape draped over the right side of his back, swaying with the rhythm of his steps.
That man was the current king of the Burning Ice Kingdom, Godric Vorhn.
He stopped before a massive black steel door, the place of rest and seclusion for one of the five Ancestors who protected the royal family of the Burning Ice.
Ysara Vorhn, his grandmother.
Godric raised his hand to knock, but it wasn’t necessary.
"Come in." A soft voice drifted from the other side, sweet and mature, smooth as if wrapped in silk.
Godric sighed, pushing the door open.
A deep creak filled the hallway as the heavy, multi-ton structure yielded to the touch of his palm.
He was a fourth-stage warrior—not the most powerful in the kingdom, but still strong enough.
The moment he crossed the doorway, his eyes fell upon Ysara.
She sat upon an ornate throne, her white hair cascading over her shoulders like a veil of snow, her golden eyes shining with a calm, ancient light.
Her voluptuous body was draped in a luxurious, comfortable gown, the soft fabric elegantly hugging every full curve.
"Royal Grandmother." Godric bowed gently before her, lowering his head slightly.
It wasn’t necessary to bow, since he was the king, but he did so out of custom nonetheless.
"Little Godric." Ysara’s lips curved into a familiar smile. "What brings you here?"
Godric smiled back, walking over and handing her a spatial ring filled with bottles of green fairy wine he’d received directly from Ron. Twenty third-stage bottles and a hundred second-stage bottles.
"Oh..." Ysara’s eyes sparkled with a flash of interest as she accepted the gift. "I appreciate the gesture, little Godric... but that’s not the only reason you came here, is it?"
"That’s correct." Godric nodded, his smile fading into a more serious expression. "Royal Grandmother, I seek guidance. You must already be aware of the situation between Amelia and her husband, David, aren’t you?"
"Hm..." Ysara thought for a brief moment, her eyes slowly closing.
"Has Amelia finally made her move? I knew this would happen..." She let out a weary sigh.
The relationship between her and Amelia was... complicated, though not in a negative way.
Ysara had been a close friend of Amelia’s grandmother, and when she discovered that a granddaughter of her old friend still lived in this world, she became the girl’s greatest supporter.
It was thanks to Ysara’s protection that, even after Amelia’s family had been exterminated on charges of treason, the girl was able to continue living.
Ysara provided the resources for Amelia to grow up, introduced her to the master of the Blue Tower, and, over the years, eventually became friends with the young woman herself.
When she learned what was happening to Ethan, Ysara even considered taking action herself to help her friend. But in the end, it was already too late.
In her isolation, she only received news of what had happened to Ethan Darkwall months after the events took place.
That was the worst part of being isolated. She only had access to information passed on to her with the highest priority—matters that posed a great risk to the kingdom.
The centuries she had spent in isolation both helped her maintain her sanity and blinded her to what was unfolding around her.
She had even considered traveling to the region of the Eternal Forest to search for Ethan herself. But she was only one of the five Ancestors. To leave, she needed permission from the High Ancestor, the sixth-stage expert of the Burning Ice Realm.
Normally, this would be a minor matter. But with the realm preparing for war, she had not been authorized to leave.
Knowing her friend well, and aware that she would never leave her own son without some means of defense, Ysara limited herself to sending a messenger to warn Amelia of what was happening.
In the end, she even warned David about the danger his actions would bring, though she knew full well that he had earned every consequence that might follow.
Ysara still remembered the day Amelia had appeared at the door of her chambers, a few weeks after her marriage to David.
Ysara herself had felt the urge to finish the job and step over Maerick’s body if necessary, given what David had tried to do to Amelia. But in the end, she had controlled herself.
She was in no position to start a civil war and condemn hundreds of thousands of people to death.
"Amelia acts under my protection," Ysara finally said, her voice taking on a firm tone that left no room for question. "Her orders regarding this matter are my orders."
"But... Royal Grandmother..." Godric hesitated before laying out all of Amelia’s demands on the Darkwalls and the Cadia.
The moment she finished hearing everything, Ysara let out a laugh full of amusement, shaking her head slightly.
"Ah... I knew she wouldn’t show any mercy," she murmured with an amused chuckle.
"Well, she didn’t kill David, so the conflict shouldn’t escalate too much." Ysara rose from her throne, stretching with slow, feline movements. "Tell the Great Ancestor that I plan to leave soon."
Godric sighed and, in the end, decided simply to remain neutral, ready to intervene on Amelia’s behalf if necessary.
It had been Ysara who had supported him in becoming king among all his brothers. He couldn’t let her down.
As for the possibility of a revolt by the Cadia family or the Darkwall family, he barely gave it a second thought.
They were among the most powerful in the kingdom, but Amelia had the support not only of Ysara but also of the master of the Blue Tower.
If they were to revolt, they would find no support at all, since no one wanted to get on the wrong side of either of these powerhouses.
