The General's daughter
Chapter 27
The blast doors shrieked as they forced open a tomb, tearing away from the frame to unleash a wall of liquid poison.
Ramona didn't hesitate. She plunged straight into the suffocating gale, her boots smashing through crusts of glowing radioactive salt and black ash that drifted down like the skin of a burned world. Above them, the sky had liquefied into a churning ceiling of toxic violet and bruised sulfur, vomiting perpetual fallout storms across a continent stripped bare of flesh and breath.
Behind her, Gary and Lina stumbled out from the dark, gagging as the freezing air slammed into their lungs. Gary jammed his respirator valve tight, his Geiger counter instantly exploding into a deafening, continuous whine of lethal decay.
"The atmosphere is eating through the seals!" Gary roared over the shriek of the tempests, his visor instantly glazing over with greasy radioactive condensation. "We've got hours, maybe minutes before our lungs turn to glass! Where the hell do we run?!"
Ramona stared out from the edge of the shattered escarpment, her eyes fixed on the graveyard of a dead civilization. Mile upon mile of skeletal skyscrapers clawed at the choking gloom like broken ribs, buried beneath suffocating dunes of black industrial slag. No campfires. No smoke. No heartbeat left on the surface—only the apocalyptic howl of a wind carrying the phantom death-rattle of a species that had devoured itself.
They had smashed Joshua's machine. They had locked the Gate and severed the digital leash meant to harvest what was left of mankind. But out here in the screaming hell of the open waste, the brutal truth clawed at their throats: freedom wasn't salvation. It was a slow execution.
"South!" Ramona screamed back, her voice iron against the gale. She gripped Fang so hard her knuckles turned white, the steel humming with static under the dying clouds. "To the coast! We find the old shipping lanes and see if the ocean is just as dead as we are!"
Lina shouldered her rifle, her eyes burning as she scanned the jagged, ash-choked horizon where dead mountains bled into the haze. "And Joshua?"
"Let him rot in his cage!" Ramona snarled. "He wanted to preserve a corpse. We're going to see if we can claw our way out of the grave!"
She hurled herself off the concrete apron, hurtling down the fractured switchback trail straight into the toxic abyss of the wasteland.
The wind struck like a physical bludgeon, a crushing wall of pressure trying to break her spine and hurl her back into the dark. She leaned straight into the fury. Every step was a brutal war against the dying earth, heavy, deliberate, and entirely her own. Behind her, boots ground relentlessly into the ash as Gary and Lina locked in behind her, a ragged, bleeding line cutting through the night.
The world was frozen, poisoned, and utterly damned.
And for the first time in two lives, it belonged to the living.
