The Game Where I Was Rank One Became Reality
Chapter 462: Ignition
The shift change at the Sector Four Industrial Hub was an exercise in staggering scale.
Every twelve hours, one hundred and fifty thousand Rootist laborers filed out of the massive subterranean foundries, while an identical number filed in to take their place. The central administrative plaza was a bottleneck of human misery—a sea of ragged, soot-stained bodies shuffling under the watchful eyes of five hundred heavily armed Imperial guards.
Nissa Tarvond stood at the apex of the plaza, an immovable, divine anchor of silver and steel.
She was a Rank 7 Hero of the Sovereign Imperium. Her physical presence was designed to project absolute security. But she was not a weapon. She was a shield. Her divine programming was written in binary absolutes: Preserve Life. Absorb Kinetic Threat. Do Not Strike.
The shift change was seventy percent complete when the geopolitical geometry of the continent suddenly, violently fractured.
A high-pitched, metallic whine cut through the dull roar of the crowd.
Crack.
An Imperial Guard captain on the eastern perimeter collapsed, his chest plate shattered by a localized implosion charge. Before the sound of the explosion even faded, a hundred dull-gray bolts of Korthane anti-magic alloy tore through the air, tearing into the ranks of the Imperial garrison.
The proxy war had ignited.
Nissa’s combat algorithm executed in a microsecond.
Threat registered. Civilian density critical. Deploying absolute preservation.
She did not draw a weapon. She did not scream a battle cry. She raised her arms, and a massive, blinding dome of silver aether exploded outward from her core, locking instantly at a perfectly calibrated radius of two hundred meters. The barrier encapsulated the central administrative plaza, shielding the panicked Ministry bureaucrats and the surviving Imperial guards.
The silver dome hummed with terrifying, immutable power. It was designed to withstand the broadside of a Kesseth naval dreadnought.
Outside the barrier, the sea of laborers transformed into a tidal wave of violence.
Tens of thousands of Rootists threw off their ragged cloaks, revealing the sleek, dull-gray glint of Korthane rapid-cycle bolt throwers and thermal cutters. The Arbiter’s massive, silent logistical operation had armed a starved demographic right under the Sovereign’s nose.
The Imperial guards who had been trapped outside Nissa’s two-hundred-meter bubble were slaughtered in less than three minutes. The laborers simply overwhelmed them with sheer, suicidal momentum.
Inside the barrier, a Ministry administrator screamed, pointing frantically as a mob of armed laborers rushed the silver dome.
"They’re attacking the shield! Strike them down, Hero! Strike them!"
Nissa did not move. She did not speak.
CF-004. Absolute silence.
CF-003. Incapable of offense.
Nissa watched through the translucent silver aether as a Rootist laborer, missing his left arm from an industrial accident three years prior, threw himself against the barrier. He carried a heavy Korthane cutter in his remaining hand. He activated the cutter, pressing the screaming, superheated blade directly against Nissa’s shield. Sparks cascaded over the silver dome.
Nissa’s logic engine struggled to process the tactical reality.
Usually, the deployment of a Rank 7 barrier was a psychological weapon. When rioters or criminals saw the impossible scale of divine magic, they broke. They scattered, terrified of the Sovereign’s wrath.
But these laborers did not scatter. They did not retreat when the Imperial guards fired upon them from the administrative towers. They simply climbed over the bodies of their dead and kept firing.
Deterrence failed. Analyzing psychological anomaly.
Nissa’s algorithmic mind processed the political cruelty floor.
Zephyr’s twenty percent quota increase had stripped these people of their future. They were already dying of starvation and exhaustion in the foundries. The Sovereign had made living so mathematically agonizing that the prospect of a quick death in a holy war held absolutely zero terror. The Arbiter had not just given them Korthane steel; he had capitalized on Zephyr’s own domestic cruelty to erase their fear.
The one-armed laborer pushed harder, his face twisted in a mask of desperate, fanatical rage, shouting Vossk’s original heresy.
He was the enemy. He was attacking the Imperium.
But he was also a civilian of the Sovereign Imperium. He was a citizen Nissa was built to protect.
The paradox paralyzed her divine logic. She could not attack him. She could not drop the barrier, because doing so would allow him to slaughter the administrators behind her. She was forced into a purely passive, agonizing defense. A statue in the middle of a burning city.
The combat was entirely static on her end. She stood perfectly still, absorbing the kinetic energy of ten thousand Korthane bolts striking her shield, physically embodying Zephyr’s stubborn refusal to adapt.
The mob quickly realized the silver dome was impenetrable. The Korthane cutters could not pierce a Rank 7 preservation matrix.
But they did not waste time mourning the failure. The mob flowed around the barrier like water around a stone in a river.
Nissa analyzed their macro-movements.
Tracking hostile vectors. Evaluating target prioritization.
She expected the mob to swarm the massive granaries on the southern edge of the Hub. They were starving; logic dictated they would seek food. Or perhaps the local treasury, to steal the Imperial mint.
They ignored the granaries. They ignored the treasury.
The entire mass of armed laborers, moving with chilling, surgical discipline, surged toward the massive, towering iron spires of the Faith Point condensers.
The realization hit Nissa’s logic engine like a physical blow.
This was not a riot for food. This was not a desperate plea for freedom. This was a highly coordinated military strike designed by a tactical genius.
The condensers were the massive engines of faith extraction. They were the economic foundation of the Sovereign’s timeline. The Arbiter had directed the mob to attack the exact resource Zephyr needed for his Rank 10 threshold. Korthane was using the Rootists to starve Zephyr of his Faith Points, mathematically delaying his Ascension.
Strategic threat critical. Ascension timeline compromised.
Nissa looked up at the towering condensers.
Tens of thousands of Rootists swarmed the base of the massive iron spires. They were planting Korthane implosion charges directly onto the primary coolant lines. They were tearing the infrastructure apart by hand, destroying the machines that had enslaved them.
Inside the safety of the silver dome, the fifty surviving Ministry administrators wept in terror, begging Nissa to do something.
But Nissa could do nothing.
Her barrier was locked at two hundred meters. She could not expand it to protect the condensers without thinning the aether to the point of collapse. She could not drop it without sacrificing the administrators she was sworn to preserve.
The first FP condenser detonated.
A massive plume of black smoke and blue aether erupted into the sky, shaking the earth so violently that the administrators were thrown to the ground.
Nissa Tarvond, the greatest defender in the Sovereign Imperium, stood perfectly still beneath her invincible silver dome. She had successfully protected fifty bureaucrats.
And she could only watch in silent, suffocating helplessness as thirty thousand rebels burned the Sovereign’s economy to the ground.
