Chapter 1395: Chapter 911: Never-Ending (Part 2)

An Abyssal Rage Demon, eager to Charge and massive enough to rival a Siege Hammer, roared impatiently as its colossal foot came down at random; several Inferior Demons that failed to dodge were pulped into flesh slurry in an instant, viscous filthy blood and shattered bone splattering, smearing across the scale-covered lower half of its body.

It did not care in the slightest; in its eyes there was only the "White Wall" ahead, exuding a stench of Order that it loathed.

Its maw bellowed and howled.

"For the Abyss!"

"Flesh! Souls!"

"Crush those Order maggots!"

The chaotic roars, laced with the pure catharsis of bestial instinct, swelled into a humming tide that froze the soul.

Among the Demons there was no shortage of colossal, hideous forms.

Frenzy Demons clad in Bone Armor, swinging Giant Axes.

Abyssal Abominations that spewed acid.

And some twisted, unnameable aberrant Giant Beasts.

Their vast bodies were Weapons in themselves, becoming path-clearing machines in the Charge, grinding over weaker kin to open a road for the Impact behind.

The theme of the Abyss is chaos.

Even these Abyssal Demons, in essence, are still chaotic.

Within Demon-kind, all manner of individuals constantly emerge; they always appear to resemble some particular type of Demon, yet in essence are nothing of the sort.

This is chaos made manifest.

The outside world has imposed a multitude of Race names upon Demons to distinguish them.

But all who study demonology must clearly understand: a Demon’s appearance is only one of the reference conditions.

Some Demons can only be analyzed by traits, because the range of variation in the outward form of any given Demon is of enormous scale.

Even Succubi, who represent desire, are like this.

Traditionally people assume Succubi are only female, yet males appear among them as well—indeed, even sexless or hermaphroditic individuals.

Every possibility appears.

As for the outward form of a Succubus, that is even more elusive.

For the world’s Races are so many, and every group’s tastes and aesthetics are so vastly different.

Succubi do not possess an innate power of infinite shapeshifting; in the end they rely on their own bodies to enchant.

Thus there are Demons with petite figures and fair skin, resembling Humans or Elves.

And there are Succubi of towering stature, muscles knotted, three heads and two pairs of arms.

This is the chaotic Abyss, birthing chaotic Races.

These gigantic Demons are no exception.

Every time a colossal foot came down, it was accompanied by tooth-aching cracks of bone and short, sharp screams.

The Demons’ formation was chaotic and frenzied; sheer numbers were their only "Order", and they sought to drown all things with raw Impact and the tally of Death.

Very soon, the black line on the horizon grew clear.

They were closing fast.

Facing the surging tide of Demons, cold, crisp orders rang out from the Night Watcher commander atop the first wall, cutting through the Demonic roars and suppressing the initial battlefield clamor.

"Range confirmed! Crossbow Cannons arrays Three and Six, saturation barrage!"

"All Archers and Mages! Firepower coverage! Target—the Charging mass!"

At the instant the orders were issued, the sky abruptly dimmed.

Then came the shrill, tearing whistle of things rending the air.

A dense storm of Enchanted Bursting Arrows, Burning Arrows, and Frost Arrows poured out from every firing slit in the walls like a squall.

They traced tight arcs of Death and fell with precision into the Demon rear ranks a kilometer out.

Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!

Spheres of annihilating flame, freezing blizzards, and blasts of energy that tore flesh bloomed one after another among the Demon horde.

The Charging ranks of Horned Demons toppled like wheat cut by scythes, while the more weakly defended Inferior Demons were outright blasted into chunks.

Yet the Abyssal tide is without end.

It is always so.

The fallen Demons did not die at once; they rolled and howled on the ground, only to be mercilessly Trampled by the comrades surging from behind, pressed into the charred soil to become a carpet of meat that leveled the road.

The Demons’ speed only increased as they trod upon the corpses and remains of their own.

Their madness turned Death itself into a force that drove them forward.

In every battle against Demons, the number they consumed internally, by calculation, may well have reached thirty percent.

In extreme cases, it could be even higher.

"Scale seven! Target: deformity beasts on the right flank! Third squad, rapid volley!"

A Night Watcher bed-crossbow squad Captain roared.

Woooo——whumm——

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Several thick Alchemy Crossbow Arrows, wreathed in potent Armor-Breaking Runes, tore through the air with a shriek that made hearts clench.

Their targets were several Abyssal Giant Beasts mixed in the tide, bodies swathed in heavy Bone Armor.

These massive presences were the greatest threat to the wall.

If they were allowed to reach it, a single simple Charge would make even the tallest rampart shudder, or even punch a breach straight through.

Because of that, their threat was always singled out for priority attention.

Crossbow Arrows hit with precision!

Splurch!

The hard Bone Armor was like paper before the Alchemy Runes, pierced through in an instant.

These Crossbow Cannons were custom-built for the Night Watchers.

The Crossbow Arrows were as well.

They had been designed specifically to counter these massive, extremely dangerous giant units.

The Crossbow Arrows drilled into the Giant Beasts’ bodies; the etched runes triggered instantly, detonating scalding or freezing energies within their flesh and blood, leaving indelible wounds, even ripping their organs apart outright.

One Giant Beast let out a sky-shaking scream, its colossal body crashing to the ground, and in falling it toppled a swath of Demons Charging behind it.

As the Demon Legion pressed closer, dense black specks appeared in the sky.

Abyssal bat-wing Demons, shrieking winged Demons, and other Flight Demons of twisted form pressed in like storm clouds, trying to break through from above.

"Sky, Flight units! Free hunt!"

The commander’s voice rang out again.

Behind the wall and atop the watchtowers, Elf Shooters already in full battle readiness—Night Watchers and Avengers alike—moved as one.

Their gazes were hawk-sharp, their movements swift and exact.

Arrow after Arrow streaked from the string, gleaming with Demon-Breaking or Purification light, like Death itself calling names.

Unlike the earlier lobbing shots.

Those still using bows now, shooting at the Flight units in the sky, were the masters of archery.

And Elves were beyond doubt the best among them, so almost all of these units were Elf troops.

They acted as snipers.

Whissh! Splurch!

The head of a shrieking winged Demon diving down to spew acid was suddenly pierced clean through by an Elf Long Arrow; it wailed, spinning as it fell.

"Left side! Three bat-wing Demons approaching at high speed!"

An Avenger Elf Ranger calmly called the mark, even as three Arrows were already nocked.

But their numbers were limited, after all.

To try to match the Demons in numbers would be sheer delusion.

The Elves’ numbers were even more incomparable, so these Elite Archer units still focused their aim on the most dangerous targets.

After all, their experience lay in dealing with extremely high-threat entities.

They aimed at those hidden within the Flight swarm that always caused large-area casualties, or could affect wide swathes of the battlefield.

Though the Demons were creatures of Chaos, after you’ve stayed in the Abyss long enough, you can pick out the truly dangerous individuals in an instant.

Almost at the same time, the launch pads behind the wall erupted with piercing eagle shrieks and furious Griffin roars.

The Night Watchers’ Giant Eagle Flight squad and the Griffin Knight Order took to the air in full formations, their gear refined, their mounts clad in light Enchantment Armor, Knights gripping Long Spears or heavy crossbows, formations tight and ordered.

Beside them rose the Avengers’ own Flight units.

These forces, drawn from many Races across the Abyss, bore varied arms and armor, looking like Mercenaries—and in truth, that was likely what they were.

Two-legged Flying Dragons, chimeras, even Casters astride Magic brooms; their ranks were relatively ragged, but just as bloodthirsty.

The two sides’ aerial units slammed together in an instant.

Magic flares, the scream of Arrows, the shrieks of mounts, the howls of Demons, all roared across the sky.

Griffins’ razor talons tore the meat-wings of bat-wing Demons; Giant Eagle Knights’ Crossbow Arrows picked out the cores of Flight Demons with precision strikes.

The Avengers’ Flying Dragons spewed blazing fire, grappling with Demons that breathed toxic mists.

Burning wreckage and torn corpses fell endlessly from the sky, smashing into the Demon masses below.

The Demons’ vanguard finally reached the foot of the wall! The distance closed to within a hundred meters.

"Free fire! Suppress the climbers!"
