The Fox And The Last Dragon
Chapter 94: When Frozen Meet Forensics
Kane stared at Rina’s flickering form, his mind racing through every protocol, every case study, every desperate possibility he could remember from his Bureau training.
Nothing prepared him for watching a friend dissolve before his eyes.
"We’ll figure this out together," he said, his voice steady despite the horror clawing at his chest.
"There has to be a way to reverse this. The binding agent, the transformation—everything has a counter-reaction."
Rina’s grateful smile wavered as her form shifted from solid to translucent again.
The temperature in the office plummeted, then spiked, making Kane’s breath mist momentarily before sweat beaded on his forehead.
Cyrus observed the temperature fluctuations with calculating eyes.
Kane barely noticed as Cyrus moved two steps closer, positioning himself at an angle that put him between Kane and Rina’s unstable form.
"Your energy signatures are bleeding into the environment," Cyrus noted, his tone clinical.
"How long has it been since the fragments first appeared?"
Rina pressed her palms together, concentrating. Her outline solidified for three seconds before dissolving again.
"I’m not sure; time gets... confused when you’re not entirely here."
Kane stepped forward to comfort her, but Cyrus’s hand touched his shoulder—light, but unmistakably restraining.
"The synthetic binding agent," Cyrus continued, ignoring Kane’s questioning glance.
"Do you still have samples?"
Rina nodded weakly. "Hidden in my apartment."
"But—" Her form flickered violently. "I don’t know how much time I have left."
Rina doubled over, clutching her temples as a strangled cry escaped her lips.
Her voice distorted, overlapping like two or three versions of herself speaking at once—one pleading, one furious, and one utterly alien.
"Kane... help me... no, stay back... who are you... I can’t..."
Kane lunged forward, but Cyrus’s voice cracked through the chaos like a whip.
"Don’t touch her."
The command froze Kane mid-step.
Cyrus’s eyes blazed with crimson warning as he assessed the situation.
The lights in the office flickered erratically.
Rina’s shadow began moving independently, elongating unnaturally across the wall behind her.
It stretched and writhed like something alive, reaching toward Kane with grasping tendrils that defied the position of her actual body.
Kane watched in horror as Rina’s shadow-self turned its head toward him, its movements completely disconnected from Rina’s convulsing form.
"Rina," Kane whispered, his hand hovering uselessly in the air between them. "Fight it. You’re stronger than whatever this is."
Rina’s body convulsed one final time before splitting apart like torn fabric.
One version of her remained slumped in the chair, translucent and barely breathing, while something else tore itself free from her essence—a writhing mass of shadow and corrupted spirit energy that wore her face like a grotesque mask.
Kane’s stomach lurched.
It wasn’t just a fragment anymore—it was Rina ripped in half, everything human and everything corrupted clawing to survive.
The Shade’s hollow eyes fixed on Kane with predatory hunger.
It lunged without warning, claws extended toward his throat.
Kane threw himself sideways, rolling behind Cyrus’s desk as the creature’s talons raked the wall where his head had been.
The impact left dark ichor in the drywall, spreading outward like infected veins.
"Kane!"
Cyrus’s dragon aura exploded outward in crimson waves, filling the office with scorching heat.
He intercepted the Shade’s next attack, his fist wreathed in dragonfire as he struck at its center mass.
His hand passed through empty air.
The Shade dissolved like smoke, reforming instantly behind Cyrus with a sound like breaking glass.
Its claws swept toward his exposed back, aiming for his spine.
"Behind you!"
Kane’s warning came a heartbeat too late.
Cyrus spun, catching the Shade’s wrist just before its talons found their mark.
The creature’s touch sent dark ichor racing up his sleeve, burning the expensive fabric and numbing his arm to the shoulder.
The real Rina whimpered from her chair, tears streaming down her flickering face.
"I’m sorry... I can’t control it..."
Suddenly, the office door burst open. Isabelle strode through the wreckage, her ice-blue eyes scanning the chaos in microseconds.
Isabelle didn’t hesitate.
She slammed her palm against the nearest wall.
Ice erupted from the point of contact, racing along every surface in crystalline veins that sealed windows, doorframes, and ventilation grates.
Within seconds, a barrier of absolute frost encased the entire office.
The Shade snapped its attention toward her, dropping Cyrus to lunge at the new threat.
Its hollow eyes burned with frustrated hunger as it tested the barriers, finding no escape route.
"Containment established," Isabelle announced coldly, frost still pouring from her extended hand.
Kane scrambled to his feet behind the desk, gun drawn but useless against an incorporeal enemy.
The Shade writhed against Isabelle’s crystalline prison, its form becoming increasingly unstable as the ice barriers pulsed with supernatural cold.
Kane watched in horror as tendrils of frost crept toward the real Rina, still slumped translucent in her chair.
"Stop! You’re going to hurt her!"
Isabelle’s pale eyes flicked toward him without breaking her concentration.
The ice barriers thickened, creating a complex lattice that seemed to slow even Rina’s flickering between states.
"If I wanted her destroyed, she’d already be gone. I’m keeping her intact."
Her voice carried the absolute zero of winter storms, matter-of-fact and emotionless.
She knelt beside Rina’s flickering form; her frost-rimed hand hovered a breath away from Rina’s chest.
Instead of the brutal cold Kane expected, gentle crystalline patterns spread across Rina’s skin like delicate snowflakes.
"I’m not freezing her," Isabelle murmured, her voice softer than Kane had ever heard it. "I’m dampening the chaotic frequencies."
The ice worked like a conductor, drawing the wild spirit energy into manageable channels.
Rina’s translucent form began to stabilize, the violent flickering slowing to a steady pulse.
But the fragments fought back.
Rina’s scream tore through the crystalline chamber, her back arching as competing energies warred within her essence.
The Shade writhed against the barriers, its hollow eyes blazing with fury as Isabelle’s ice severed its connection to its host.
Kane dropped to his knees beside Rina, gripping her hand despite the supernatural cold radiating from Isabelle’s technique.
"I’ve got you," he whispered fiercely. "You’re not alone."
