The Fox And The Last Dragon

Chapter 82: Sunset And Something Else

Cyrus’s hand hovered just inches from his face, close enough that Kane could feel the warmth radiating from his skin.

His crimson eyes lowered, focusing on Kane’s mouth with an intensity that made Kane’s stomach flip.

Kane’s pulse hammered against his ribs so loudly he was sure Cyrus could hear it.

The plush dragon in his hands was crushed against his chest as every nerve ending sparked to life.

Time seemed suspended at the peak of the Ferris wheel, the golden sunset painting everything in warm hues.

The couple in the next gondola had gone quiet. Even the wind had stilled.

Kane’s lips parted slightly, an unconscious invitation.

Cyrus’s fingers lightly brushed a strand of silver hair away from Kane’s face, the touch feather-soft and deliberate.

Then he plucked something small and sticky from the strands—a tiny tuft of bright blue cotton candy, clinging stubbornly to the silver locks.

He held it up between them.

"You’re a mess."

Kane blinked, the spell broken so abruptly he felt dizzy.

Heat flooded his cheeks as reality crashed back to the swaying gondola and the distant sounds of the park below.

Relief and frustration warred in his chest, leaving him breathless for entirely different reasons.

Cyrus’s mouth quirked upward in the barest hint of a smirk as he flicked the cotton candy over the side of the gondola, watching it drift away on the evening breeze.

"You ruined the moment."

Kane’s voice came out more accusatory than he’d intended, betraying the flutter of disappointment in his chest.

"What moment?"

Cyrus’s tone was perfectly deadpan, his expression returning to its usual composed mask as if nothing had happened at all.

As if he hadn’t just been staring at Kane’s mouth like he wanted to devour it.

"Nothing, forget it," Kane huffed, pressing the dragon plushie against his face to hide his burning cheeks.

"Also, personal space is a thing, you know."

Cyrus settled back into his seat with that infuriating composure intact, as if he hadn’t just made Kane’s heart attempt escape velocity.

The Ferris wheel began its descent, carrying them back to earth and away from whatever moment had almost happened at the top.

The gondola rocked gently as it settled into the loading platform.

Kane stepped onto the platform, feeling slightly unsteady on his legs. The evening air hit his face, cooler now as the sun dipped lower on the horizon.

Around them, the path buzzed with families heading toward the exit, children clutching oversized prizes, and parents checking phones for the time.

Kane glanced back at the Ferris wheel, its lights beginning to twinkle against the deepening sky.

The gondola they’d occupied swayed empty now, innocent of the tension that had filled it moments before.

But Cyrus was already walking toward the exit, his expression unreadable as always.

Kane hurried to catch up, the plushies bouncing in his arms.

Suddenly, the hairs on the back of Kane’s neck stood up as they approached the park’s main gates.

His fox instincts prickled with familiar unease—the sensation of eyes tracking his movements through the thinning crowd.

Kane shifted the plushies to one arm and casually glanced over his shoulder, scanning the families and couples streaming toward the exit.

There, a figure in a dark hoodie lingered near the churro stand, face obscured but body angled in their direction.

When Kane looked again, the person had moved to browse a souvenir cart.

"The parking lot’s this way." Cyrus’s voice cut through Kane’s assessment.

A warm hand settled on Kane’s back, guiding him away from the main flow of foot traffic.

The touch was subtle but unmistakably protective, steering Kane toward a less crowded path that led to the parking area.

"You notice it too?"

Kane kept his voice low, casual enough to pass for normal conversation.

Cyrus’s stride didn’t falter, but his fingers pressed slightly firmer against Kane’s spine.

"Just enjoying the evening air."

The non-answer was answer enough.

Kane’s mind raced through possibilities—was this connected to the spirit trafficking case?

Or was he just being paranoid after a long day?

The parking lot came into view, mostly empty now except for scattered vehicles under the yellow glow of security lights.

Their footsteps echoed against the asphalt as they moved toward the Mercedes.

Cyrus unlocked the car with a soft beep that echoed across the nearly empty lot.

Kane slid into the passenger seat, still clutching the plushies, and watched through the side mirror as the hooded figure emerged from the park’s main entrance.

The person paused at the edge of the lot, scanning the vehicles as if searching for something.

"Friend of yours?"

Cyrus’s voice held a dangerous edge as he started the engine.

"Not unless my friends have started hiding their faces." Kane shifted in his seat, tracking the figure’s movements.

"Could be anyone; trafficking contacts, Bureau surveillance, or just some random creep who thinks we look interesting."

Instead of heading straight for the exit, Cyrus looped the car around the lot.

As they passed, the figure turned away sharply, hands deep in pockets.

Kane caught a glimpse of pale hands and dark clothing, but nothing else identifying.

"Want me to—"

"No."

Cyrus’s tone brooked no argument as he accelerated toward the exit.

"Tonight was supposed to be a break from all that."

Kane settled back into his seat, surprised by the protective note in Cyrus’s voice.

The city lights stretched before them as they left the park behind.

The drive back to the penthouse passed in comfortable silence, the earlier tension from their mysterious observer fading as they navigated through the city’s evening traffic.

Kane clutched the plushies against his chest as they waited at a red light, the dragon’s soft fabric comforting against his fingers.

"Thanks for today."

His voice was quieter than usual, almost shy.

"I know amusement parks aren’t exactly your thing."

Cyrus’s hands tightened on the steering wheel, his gaze fixed on the traffic ahead.

"Well, the day isn’t over yet."

Cyrus turned onto a different street, away from the route to the penthouse.
