The Fox And The Last Dragon
Chapter 45: Hot Tub In The Living Room
Marcus led them through a series of pristine corridors. The polished brass fixtures shone against rich mahogany paneling, and plush carpet muffled their footsteps.
"Here we are, gentlemen. Marcus announced the arrival of the Poseidon Suite and produced an ornate key card.
He swept it across a gold-plated sensor, and the double doors swung open silently.
Kane’s jaw fell open.
The suite opened into a vast living area with floor-to-ceiling windows that showcased the endless blue of the Aegean Sea.
Sunlight spilled across Italian marble floors, illuminating furniture that looked too expensive to touch.
"Holy sh—" Kane caught himself. "This is incredible."
A gleaming grand piano occupied one corner beside a fully stocked bar with rare liquors.
The centerpiece of the room was a circular hot tub, surrounded by mood lighting that cycled through subtle oceanic hues.
"Is that a hot tub in the living room?" Kane whispered, eyes wide.
Marcus smiled. "It features seven different jet settings and chromotherapy lighting. The temperature can be adjusted via the tablet."
Kane wandered through the space, touching everything with barely contained excitement. He paused suddenly, a new thought crossing his mind.
"Um, are there separate bedrooms?" he asked, trying to sound casual.
"Of course, sir," Marcus replied.
"The master suite is through those doors, and the second bedroom is just beyond the library alcove. Both have en-suite bathrooms with rainfall showers."
Kane exhaled with visible relief. "Perfect."
Cyrus surveyed the suite with indifference, but his eyes tracked Kane’s movements.
"Would you care for a tour of the Silver Mermaid?" Marcus asked, gesturing toward the door.
"I’d be happy to show you our world-class amenities—the spa, casino, exclusive dining..."
"That sounds—" Kane began enthusiastically.
"Perhaps later," Cyrus interrupted. "We’d like to settle in first."
Marcus nodded. "Of course, sir. Simply call the concierge when you’re ready."
As Marcus retreated, Kane wandered to the balcony doors and slid them open. The Mediterranean breeze caressed his face as he stepped outside.
The balcony wrapped around the forward section of the ship, offering a breathtaking view of the sea.
Kane noticed an identical balcony adjacent to theirs, separated by an ornate partition.
"Do we have neighbors?" he asked as Cyrus joined him.
Marcus, who was just leaving, paused.
"Yes, sir. There are only two premier suites on board—yours, the Poseidon Suite, and the Neptune Suite next door. The Holloway family is currently occupying it."
Kane’s eyes widened, exchanging a significant look with Cyrus.
"The occupants of our premier suites are also entitled to dine at the Captain’s Table," Marcus added with practiced smoothness.
"It’s our most exclusive dining experience on board, limited to just eight guests per evening."
Kane caught Cyrus giving him a subtle nod.
"That sounds perfect," Kane said, casually leaning against the balcony railing. "Could you book us a reservation? Preferably tonight, if possible."
Marcus pulled out a slim tablet from his jacket pocket.
"Let me check availability... You’re in luck, gentlemen. We have two seats available for this evening at eight o’clock."
"Excellent," Kane replied, already imagining the Holloways at the same table. "We’ll be there."
"Very good, sir. Formal attire is required." Marcus gave a small bow. "Will there be anything else?"
"That will be all," said Cyrus.
When Marcus departed, Cyrus moved to the bar and poured two glasses of water.
"The Artemis Suite on the Celestial Voyager was more impressive," he remarked, handing Kane a glass. "But this will suffice."
Kane gulped the water, staring at Cyrus over the rim of his glass.
"Are you kidding me? This place is incredible. I’ve never even seen a hotel room this nice, let alone a cruise ship suite." He gestured wildly at their surroundings.
"There’s a hot tub in the living room, Cyrus. A hot tub!"
He walked back to the balcony, taking in the endless blue horizon.
"And talk about luck—Holloway’s literally next door. Plus we’ve already got seats at the Captain’s Table tonight. The arrangements couldn’t have gone more smoothly if we’d planned it ourselves."
Cyrus set his glass down on a marble coaster, his expression unchanged.
"I expected as much."
"You expected—" Kane shook his head.
"Holloway’s predictable. He always books the best accommodations and never misses the Captain’s Table. It’s where he networks with potential buyers." Cyrus straightened his collar.
"We should prepare for dinner. Holloway appreciates punctuality."
Kane sighed, downing the rest of his water. "Fine. But I’m trying that hot tub later."
"You’re free to explore the ship," Cyrus said, removing his jacket and draping it over a chair.
"I need to rest and catch up with work."
Kane snorted. "You’re no fun at all. We’re on a luxury cruise ship, and you want to work?"
He walked to the window, gazing at the people lounging by the pool several decks below.
"Besides, I couldn’t go far anyway." He tapped his chest where the karmic seal burned beneath his shirt.
"Remember what happened last time we tried distance?"
Cyrus frowned. "The bond’s range has been extending. We might manage separate decks now."
"And risk collapsing in agony in front of Bernard Holloway?" Kane raised an eyebrow. "Great first impression."
He grabbed Cyrus’s sleeve and tugged.
"Come on. We’ll check out the pool, grab a drink, and maybe scope out Holloway’s security detail."
Cyrus remained unmoved, but Kane persisted.
"Consider it reconnaissance. The more we know about this ship, the better prepared we’ll be."
Cyrus exhaled slowly, recognizing the futility of resistance.
"Fine," he conceded, retrieving his jacket.
Kane beamed, practically bouncing toward the door.
"Perfect! I saw a map by the elevator. There’s a casino on deck eight, three restaurants, a spa—oh, and a nightclub called ’The Trident’ that looks promising."
He was already halfway into the corridor, forcing Cyrus to quicken his pace to keep up.
"We should start at the upper deck," Kane continued, pressing the elevator button repeatedly as if that would make it arrive faster.
The elevator arrived with a soft chime, and Kane pulled Cyrus inside.
The doors closed, and Cyrus realized he was trapped, inevitably drawn into the fox spirit’s orbit once again.
