The Fox And The Last Dragon
Chapter 31: Chains Of The Moonlight Chamber
Kane watched as the moonlight intensified, its silvery beam narrowing to pierce the darkness above.
The light struck a precisely carved crystal embedded in the ceiling directly above the portal, previously hidden in shadow.
"Look," he whispered, pointing upward.
The crystal captured the moonlight, splitting it into dozens of thin beams that danced across the chamber.
Each ray found its mark on silver runes etched into the floor—symbols that had remained invisible until this exact moment.
The runes awakened, pulsing with ethereal light, forming connections between themselves like a complex circuit.
Energy flowed through the patterns, converging on the sealed portal.
The metallic surface began to glow, first dull red, then brilliant white-hot.
A deep groan echoed through the chamber as ancient mechanisms stirred to life.
The portal’s segments rotated and retracted, stone grinding against stone after centuries of stillness.
Dust billowed upward, and with it came swirling arcane vapors.
"Well..." Kane whispered tensely, his hand hovering near his weapon, "Either it’s the chalice or a cursed tomb. Wanna flip a coin?"
As the portal opened fully, Kane and Cyrus stepped into a small, circular chamber that seemed to exist outside of normal space. The air felt charged, as if reality itself thinned here.
At the center floated a pedestal of polished obsidian.
Ancient chains hung suspended around it, neither touching the floor nor ceiling, swaying slightly despite the absence of any breeze.
Kane approached cautiously. "Do you feel that? It’s like the air is... watching us."
On the pedestal’s surface was a perfect chalice-shaped indentation.
As they drew closer, glowing script appeared around the rim, ancient characters shifting into modern language before their eyes:
"The Keeper remains until the vessel returns."
Cyrus’s jaw tightened. "It’s not here. Someone took it."
Kane stared at the empty pedestal, then at the elaborate temple defenses they’d battled through, and finally at the mystical chamber that had remained sealed for centuries.
"So we came all this way for a... receipt?" He ran a hand through his hair in frustration.
"Whoever has it must have gotten here years ago," Cyrus muttered, his expression darkening.
Kane sighed dramatically. "Great. So we fought stone golems for nothing."
Cyrus stepped forward, placing his palm on the empty pedestal to examine the inscription more closely.
The moment his fingers touched the obsidian surface, the chamber reacted violently.
The entrance slammed shut behind them with a thunderous boom.
The ancient chains, suspended in midair, suddenly became taut and glowed with ethereal blue energy.
"Okay, this time it’s on you!" Kane hissed, snapping his pistol into position.
The mist that had been lazily drifting around them suddenly thickened and swirled with purpose, coalescing into a massive form.
It towered nearly ten feet tall, a humanoid shape of pure spirit energy wearing ceremonial armor crafted from what appeared to be the bones of ancient spirit beasts.
The guardian was faceless, just a blank expanse where features should be, yet somehow Kane felt its rage directed squarely at them.
Its massive hands, wreathed in crackling energy, flexed menacingly.
Kane aimed his pistol at the guardian. "I think we just triggered the alarm system."
The guardian’s voice thundered without a mouth, resonating directly in their minds.
"Thieves. Defilers. You will join the others."
Kane fired three shots in rapid succession.
The bullets tore through the guardian’s form without resistance, embedding in the stone wall beyond.
"Others?" Cyrus’s eyes narrowed as he stepped forward, wings unfurling. "Who came before us?"
The guardian swung a massive fist that Cyrus barely dodged. The impact crater it left in the stone floor made Kane wince.
"Maybe save the interrogation for when it’s not trying to pulverize us?" Kane backed away, searching for any weakness in the spectral entity.
Cyrus unleashed a blast of crimson energy that momentarily disrupted the guardian’s form before it reconstituted itself.
"Physical attacks won’t work," Cyrus growled. "It’s bound to this chamber by those chains."
Kane’s eyes followed the glowing chains to where they connected to small anchor points around the room. "So we break the chains?"
He squinted through the swirling mist, counting the glowing chains that anchored the guardian to the chamber.
"There—six chains, evenly spaced." He pointed quickly, ducking as the guardian’s massive fist swung overhead.
"I can take them out with the rune pistol, but I need time."
Cyrus nodded, his crimson eyes flaring with intensity. "How many shots per chain?"
"No idea." Kane checked his ammunition. "But I’ve got eighteen rounds left."
The guardian roared, the sound vibrating through their bones rather than their ears. The guardian lunged toward Kane, sensing his plan.
"Go!" Cyrus shouted, launching himself between Kane and the spirit. His wings unfurled fully, creating a barrier of black scales and sinew.
Crimson energy crackled around his fists as he launched into a blur of strikes—each blow rippling through the air like thunder.
"Whatever you’re doing," Cyrus growled through gritted teeth as he grappled with the massive entity, "do it quickly. I can’t hold this thing forever."
Kane rolled to the side, taking aim at the first chain. The guardian howled as it sensed his intention, struggling against Cyrus’s hold.
The bullet struck true, its arcane energy shattering the ethereal link. The guardian’s howl of rage reverberated through their minds.
"One down!" Kane called, already moving to the next position.
The second and third chains fell in quick succession, each shot weakening the guardian’s connection to the physical realm.
Its misty form flickered and wavered, becoming increasingly unstable.
Cyrus grappled with the entity, his muscles straining as crimson energy flowed from his hands.
"Hurry!"
Kane’s fourth shot rang out, then the fifth.
The guardian thrashed violently, its power diminishing with each broken tether.
"Last one!" Kane shouted, taking careful aim at the final chain.
The bullet streaked across the chamber, striking the glowing anchor point. As the chain disintegrated, the guardian let out a deafening psychic scream.
But instead of dissipating, it summoned one final surge of power.
With impossible strength, it broke free from Cyrus’s hold, sending the dragon spirit crashing into the wall.
For a heartbeat, everything went silent. Then the guardian moved—faster than it should, faster than Kane could track.
It charged directly at him with terrifying speed, its ghostly hands outstretched for his throat.
