The Fox And The Last Dragon
Chapter 255: The False God Takes His Throne
Elias withdrew toward the observation platform, leaving Cyrus to recover on the laboratory floor.
The blood sigil’s burn faded slowly.
"The physical destruction of the egg is technically permissible," Elias said over his shoulder. "Your contract specified survival. The hatchling’s spirit will survive. The shell is incidental."
Cyrus pushed himself upright.
His breathing steadied.
"Must the resonance be extracted, or can it be channeled through the intact shell?"
Elias paused at the console.
"Theoretically? Yes. Practically? Inefficient and dangerous to the forging sequence."
"Explain."
"The egg’s protective runes create interference. Separating the spirit from the shell eliminates variables."
Elias pulled up holographic projections.
"The shell is replaceable once the Crystal is complete. The spirit is not."
Cyrus studied the display.
Saving Kane and protecting the hatchling had become the same problem.
He needed to make Elias’s ritual work without destroying either of them.
His chest tightened.
A small voice touched the edges of his awareness.
Father?
Cyrus closed his eyes.
I’m scared.
I know.
Is Fox Daddy coming?
I’m going to bring him back.
Silence.
And you?
Cyrus’s throat tightened.
I’m not leaving you either.
The telepathic connection faded.
Cyrus opened his eyes.
"I need access to the egg’s resonance readings."
Elias glanced back.
"Why?"
"Destroying the shell could introduce unnecessary instability into the ritual. If the protective runes are already synchronized with both parents, forcing separation risks damaging the catalyst before the forging begins."
Elias considered this.
"Your concern is noted."
The laboratory transformed as mechanical infrastructure retracted into the walls.
Ancient draconic architecture emerged beneath.
Obsidian pillars carved with glyphs older than written language rose from the floor.
Five containment vessels occupied the cardinal points of the ritual chamber.
The Roaring Shard pulsed blood-red at the northern pillar, its crystalline petals opening and closing like a predatory flower. Primary divine energy and authority radiated outward.
The Screaming Shard hung suspended in the eastern pillar, violet light strobing violently against its containment field. It amplified spiritual resonance with aggressive intensity.
The Silent Shard occupied the southern position, pure white and utterly still. Sound died within three feet of its presence.
The Singing Shard at the western pillar glowed pale green, its harmonic frequencies creating delicate interference patterns across the chamber. Restoration. Harmony between fragments.
The Whispering Shard twisted in the central pillar, smoky gray tendrils distorting the space around it. Reconnecting fractured spiritual boundaries.
Technicians moved between stations, calibrating equipment.
Elias descended toward the ritual chamber with the obsidian egg case.
Cyrus intercepted him.
"The egg’s protective runes are already synchronized with both parents."
Elias set the case down.
"That doesn’t change my assessment."
"Forcibly removing the hatchling’s spirit could damage its resonance permanently."
Cyrus gestured toward the containment pillars.
"We have one convergence window. You cannot risk destroying your only living catalyst before the forging begins."
Elias’s expression remained neutral.
"You’re stalling."
"I’m ensuring success."
Cyrus met his gaze.
"The interference from the egg’s runes is manageable during the initial synchronization phase. If the resonance fails, you can proceed with extraction then."
Elias considered this.
The hawk-spirit technician approached with a datapad.
"Sir, the convergence window opens in twenty-three minutes."
Elias glanced at the readings.
"Very well."
He looked back at Cyrus.
"The hatchling remains in the egg during the first phase. If synchronization fails, I proceed with extraction immediately."
Cyrus nodded once.
A temporary victory.
Not enough.
Cyrus reviewed the forging sequence one final time while technicians completed their preparations.
The Roaring Shard would channel its full divine authority into the central matrix during initial synchronization.
Approximately four seconds after the sequence began, the suppression network would lose access to the Shard’s power.
The Royal Command Seal would destabilize.
His instincts would be free.
Four seconds.
He needed those four seconds to do something Elias couldn’t control.
Something that wouldn’t trigger the blood sigil.
Something that would protect Kane and the hatchling simultaneously.
The hawk-spirit technician called out from the observation platform.
"Convergence begins in two minutes."
Elias stood at the center of the ritual chamber.
"Take your position, Cyrus."
Cyrus moved toward the northern pillar.
The Roaring Shard pulsed inches from his face.
Its divine resonance pushed against his dragonfire instincts like a physical weight.
Elias raised his hand.
"Begin synchronization."
The five Shards ignited.
Elias stood at the central control platform, surrounded by the Raven Prototype IX network.
Twelve synthetic ravens spread their mechanical wings in perfect synchronization.
Ancient runes ignited across their synthetic bones—draconic script mixed with spirit-binding glyphs stolen from a dozen extinct clans.
Their eyes blazed gold as necromantic energy flowed between them, forming an enormous lattice above the forging array.
The air grew thick.
Elias raised both hands, speaking an invocation—not to a god, but to the machinery he had created.
"The gods abandoned their creation."
His voice carried weight that had nothing to do with volume.
"Today, creation will answer to its creator."
The five Shards rose from their pillars.
Slow. Inevitable.
The Roaring Shard floated above the center, its crystalline structure catching light from the other four fragments.
Its crystalline petals unfurled with geometric precision, exactly as they had during Cyrus’s failed attempt to resurrect Kane.
Cyrus recognized the resemblance immediately.
For a moment, he wasn’t in Elias’s facility at all.
He was back in the ruined villa, holding Kane’s lifeless body and begging the heavens for a miracle that never came.
His dragonfire faltered.
Elias noticed.
"Focus, Cyrus."
Cyrus forced his gaze back to the array.
"I am focused."
"Then stop mourning the dead and start bringing him back."
Crimson dragonfire poured from Cyrus’s palms, flowing into the northern pillar in controlled streams that wrapped around the Roaring Shard’s crystalline petals.
Violet lightning danced between the Shards, creating a web of raw divine energy that crackled and sparked.
The Silent Shard created pockets of absolute stillness where sound died instantly, leaving vacuum-pockets that made the air pressure fluctuate wildly.
The Singing Shard produced a melody that resonated through Cyrus’s bones—not pleasant, but hauntingly familiar, like hearing a lullaby sung in a dead language.
The Whispering Shard bent the chamber’s geometry.
Reality twisted around it, revealing fleeting images of the ruined Spirit Realm through cracks in dimensional boundaries—marble spires collapsing, dragons falling from burning skies, foxfire scattering into ash.
The Roaring Shard unfurled fully into a crown of crystalline petals around a burning divine core.
White-gold light spilled outward.
The Eternal Forging Array activated.
