The Fox And The Last Dragon

Chapter 253: A Counterfeit Crown

Isabelle pressed her thumb against the frozen platinum coin, willing it to respond.

Still nothing.

The hold music cut off mid-note.

"This better not be another false alarm." Ginsei’s voice carried sharp irritation. "We’re already stretched handling the spirit surge—"

"Cyrus Veyr Drakhal has failed to report for seventy-two hours," Isabelle interrupted. "His emergency beacon is offline. Spirit-linked channels are dead."

A keyboard clattered.

"What was his last known location?"

"A private volcanic island in the Pacific. Tiamara Resort"

More typing.

Then Ginsei’s breath caught.

"We’ve been tracking unusual spiritual disturbances around that location for two days. Assumed it was natural volcanic activity interacting with nexus energy."

Isabelle straightened.

"What kind of disturbances?"

"The readings don’t resemble ordinary dragonfire," Ginsei admitted. "They show synthetic spirit signatures interwoven with divine energy. The pattern structure—"

Rina’s voice cut in from another line.

"—matches the technology recovered from St. Mariel’s."

Isabelle’s hand tightened around the phone.

"How certain are you?"

"Ninety-three percent correlation," Rina confirmed.

"Same resonance frequency. Same structural matrix. Whoever built those chimeras has escalated operations significantly."

Isabelle opened the secure vault beneath her desk and retrieved a titanium case.

Inside: a data crystal labeled CONTINGENCY PROTOCOL: THORNE.

She inserted it into her terminal.

Files cascaded across the screen—partial lists of suspected research facilities, records of suspicious Veyr Corp transactions linked to synthetic spirit technology, emergency authorization granting Isabelle full cooperation with the BSA.

And a warning, written in Cyrus’s precise script:

Elias Thorne may have developed methods of controlling ancient spirits through hybrid technology. If this file is accessed, assume the worst.

"Sending you encrypted files now," Isabelle said.

Her fingers flew across the keyboard.

"Cyrus suspected Elias Thorne was involved in advanced synthetic research. He didn’t know the full scope."

Data transferred with a soft chime.

Ginsei’s breathing quickened as he scanned the documents.

"These facility coordinates—half are already flagged in our investigation. The others..."

He trailed off.

"What?"

"The synthetic signatures around the island don’t originate there alone," Ginsei explained. "The island was merely a transit point. Something transported a large concentration of divine energy elsewhere. Recently."

Rina spoke up.

"Can we trace the destination?"

"Not through conventional spatial tracking."

Ginsei enlarged the spectral readings, his screen glowing faintly through the connection.

"But whatever opened that portal left a resonance trail."

Isabelle leaned forward.

"Can you follow it?"

Ginsei’s expression darkened.

"I can try."

"And if you succeed?"

"Then we’d better hope we’re not too late."

Cyrus returned to the forging chamber, each step dragging against the floor’s polished obsidian.

The stabilizer Elias administered numbed the worst of the synthetic corruption, but his core still burned with foreign energy.

Two technicians monitored the Shard pillars from a reinforced control station. They didn’t acknowledge his entrance.

Elias stood at the central terminal, reviewing holographic projections of the karmic bond extraction.

"You recover quickly," Elias observed without turning.

"Dragon physiology."

Cyrus approached the array’s outer ring, studying the Shards’ containment pillars.

Each one hummed with distinct divine resonance—Whispering, Singing, Silent, Screaming, Roaring.

"I need access to the synchronization schematics."

Elias glanced over.

"Why?"

"The karmic bond method destabilized faster than expected," Cyrus stated.

"If you want successful extraction without destroying Kane’s core entirely, I’ll need to refine the spiritual frequency."

Elias considered this.

Then he gestured toward a monitored terminal positioned against the chamber’s curved wall.

"There. Read-only access."

Cyrus moved to the workstation, ignoring the security camera mounted above. His fingers navigated the interface, pulling up energy distribution models.

The Roaring Shard’s pillar branched into two distinct systems.

One fed directly into the forging array’s central matrix.

The other connected to a separate network threading throughout the facility—suppression wards, containment fields, the Ravens’ control nodes.

And the Royal Command Seal.

Cyrus expanded the diagnostic overlay.

The Seal’s energy signature pulsed with crimson-and-gold resonance, radiating authority that should have forced immediate submission.

But something felt off.

He overlaid his own memories of authentic royal command magic—the weight of ancestral power passed through Black Dragon lineage for millennia.

This was close.

Nearly perfect.

But manufactured.

Cyrus traced the Seal’s power flow backward through the facility’s infrastructure.

It didn’t originate from Elias.

The energy was being transmitted.

From somewhere else.

Cyrus expanded the energy distribution schematic, tracing the Roaring Shard’s crimson-gold threads through the facility’s infrastructure.

The suppression circuit revealed itself layer by layer.

Synthetic conduits extracted measured pulses of divine authority from the Shard’s core.

Those pulses filtered through a lattice of crystalline nodes—each one carved with draconic glyphs Cyrus recognized from ancestral records.

The glyphs weren’t original.

They were copied.

Flawlessly reproduced from temple ruins, throne room carvings, the very bones of dead Dragon Kings.

The conduits channeled divine authority through those stolen patterns, reshaping raw power into something that felt like royal command.

But It wasn’t royal.

It had never been royal.

The Seal possessed none of the ancient bloodline’s living authority—no inherited weight of millennia, no direct connection to the gods who first forged draconic sovereignty.

Elias had taken fragments of divine power, forced them through synthetic conduits, and taught the resulting imitation to speak in the language of dragon instinct.

A counterfeit crown.

And Cyrus had knelt before it.

His claws scraped against the terminal’s surface, leaving shallow grooves in the metal casing.

The technicians glanced over. Cyrus forced his hands to still.

Brilliant.

Absolutely brilliant.

And maddening.

Because the counterfeit worked.

His body responded to the false authority exactly as it would respond to genuine royal command.

Instinct didn’t recognize the difference between authentic divine lineage and manufactured spiritual pressure.

The Seal exploited biological reflexes hardened into dragon physiology over countless generations.

He traced the suppression network’s power flow again.

The Roaring Shard maintained continuous output—small enough to avoid depleting the fragment’s core, large enough to sustain the Seal’s command over every system in the facility.

Disconnecting the Shard wasn’t possible.

The containment pillar’s defenses would incinerate anything that tried breaking through its wards.

And the blood contract binding him to Elias specifically prohibited deliberate sabotage of the forging array.

His spirit core would collapse before he successfully severed the connection.
