The Fox And The Last Dragon
Chapter 245: The Raven And The Ruined Resurrection
"Keth’var nos, shi’ren."
The Old Draconic words cracked on his tongue, vowels fracturing under the weight of grief. "Forgive me."
Kane’s silver hair stuck to his forehead in sweaty tangles.
Cyrus smoothed it back with trembling fingers, tucking strands behind pointed ears that had lost their usual flicker of awareness.
"Nos keth var’shien. Ver’dan keth." I failed you. Again.
Cyrus pressed his forehead against Kane’s, crimson eyes burning as he whispered the final damning prayer.
"Shi’mara nos ver’kan. Eth’nor vas shi."
Take my soul instead. Let him live.
Cyrus’s fingers closed around the Roaring Shard.
The crystal pulsed once against his palm—recognition, or perhaps greeting—before heat flooded up his arm in waves that felt too alive for simple magic.
He positioned Kane flat on the bed, adjusting limbs into ritual formation with methodical care that belied the panic clawing at his throat.
Arms spread wide like wings. Legs straight. Head tilted back to expose the hollow of his throat, where silver markings had faded to ash-gray.
Cyrus dragged his thumb across the obsidian blade he’d summoned, splitting skin until blood welled dark and rich.
He pressed the wound to Kane’s sternum, directly over the fractured spirit core that had given up fighting.
"Ver’kan shi’mara," Cyrus whispered. "Bind to me."
The blood-seal flared crimson, sinking into Kane’s skin like water into parched earth.
Cyrus positioned the Roaring Shard over Kane’s chest, holding it suspended above the bloodmark with both hands.
The Shard responded immediately.
Violet-red light erupted outward in concentric rings that washed the white sheets in shades of wine and fire.
The crystal vibrated against Cyrus’s palms, humming with a frequency that bypassed hearing and went straight to bone.
It knew what Cyrus intended.
Kane’s body lifted off the bed—not violently, but with the slow, inevitable drift of something caught in an invisible current.
His silver hair floated upward, strands spreading around his head like he’d been submerged in deep water.
No breath moved his chest.
No pulse beat beneath pale skin.
But the Shard saw him anyway.
"Keth’var nos shi’ren, ver’dan keth," Cyrus murmured, the Old Draconic rolling off his tongue in measured cadence.
He pulled crimson energy from his core, channeling it through the blood-seal and into Kane’s dying spark.
The Shard pulsed brighter with each syllable.
Cyrus’s vision blurred as he poured more spirit energy than was safe into the connection, feeling his reserves drain like water through cupped hands.
"Shi’mara eth’nor vas. Nos ver’kan shi."
The Roaring Shard split open.
Not fracturing, but blooming.
Crystalline petals unfurled from the core with geometric precision, revealing inner chambers that glowed with divine essence so pure it hurt to witness.
The light inside wasn’t violet-red anymore.
It burned white gold—ancient, terrible, and hungry.
Cyrus’s hands shook as he held the flowering Shard steady above Kane’s motionless form.
Divine energy spilled outward in slow, deliberate spirals, descending toward Kane’s chest like liquid starlight seeking its vessel.
"Please," Cyrus whispered, abandoning ritual for raw desperation. "Please work."
Cyrus pressed the blooming Shard to Kane’s sternum. Divine energy surged downward, seeking entrance—
Kane’s body convulsed.
Silver foxfire erupted from his skin in wild, defensive bursts that scorched Cyrus’s hands and sent sparks ricocheting off the villa walls.
Even without a heartbeat, Kane’s spirit core spasmed violently, the last remnants of foxfire instinctively rejecting foreign divinity.
His spine arched impossibly high, vertebrae cracking with the strain as his spirit core rejected the offered power like poison.
"No—Kane, stop—"
Cyrus wrestled the thrashing form back down, pinning Kane’s shoulders with his forearms while keeping the Shard pressed to his chest.
The foxfire intensified, blazing hotter until Cyrus’s palms blistered beneath the onslaught.
"Please," Cyrus choked out, crimson eyes burning with unshed tears. "I know it hurts, I know—but you have to accept it—"
Kane’s head whipped side to side, silver hair plastering to his sweat-soaked face.
His lips moved soundlessly, forming words Cyrus couldn’t hear over the roar of conflicting energies.
Another violent spasm nearly threw Cyrus off entirely.
The lights stuttered—once, twice—plunging the villa into strobing darkness that made Kane’s convulsing form appear frozen in violent snapshots.
Glass rattled in the window frames.
The obsidian egg case pulsed frantic crimson, distress signals flaring brighter with each tremor that shook the foundation.
Something in the Spirit Realm itself was screaming.
Kane’s foxfire blazed hotter, silver flames licking up his arms in defensive spirals that Cyrus couldn’t control—
Just then, a shriek like tearing metal ripped through the villa.
The massive glass window exploded inward.
Shards scattered like knives, spinning through air in glittering arcs that sliced curtains and embedded in furniture.
Cyrus threw himself over Kane’s body as a shadow blotted out the stars.
A gigantic synthetic raven burst through the destroyed window, wings spanning twelve feet across.
Metal feathers caught moonlight, each one sharpened to blade-edge precision.
Glowing glyph-eyes swiveled with mechanical precision, scanning the room.
Spirit-thread veins pulsed beneath its chassis like exposed circuitry, visible through gaps in the plating where organic tissue had been replaced with weaponized augmentation.
The creature’s head snapped toward the bed.
Toward the blooming Roaring Shard still pressed against Kane’s chest.
Cyrus snarled, unfurling obsidian wings to shield them both—
The raven ignored him entirely.
It dived.
Talons extended—not natural keratin but reinforced steel wrapped in crackling energy fields—reaching straight for the divine artifact radiating white-gold light.
Cyrus grabbed Kane with one hand and the Shard with the other.
But the raven struck with precision.
Its beak, sharpened to a surgical edge, clamped around the Roaring Shard and tore it from his bloodied grip.
Pain exploded through Cyrus’s palm as scales split apart, flesh peeling back to expose bone.
The ritual collapsed instantly.
Kane fell back to the bed, limp.
Silver light guttered out like a candle snuffed by wind, leaving only wisps of smoke that dissipated into nothing.
The resurrection energy dispersed, unraveling in threads that sparked once before fading entirely.
Cyrus lunged after the raven, crimson dragonfire already building in his throat—
The raven banked hard, mechanical wings slicing through air.
Cyrus’s dragonfire scorched empty space where the creature had been a heartbeat prior.
The synthetic beast clutched the Roaring Shard against its chest—then the crystalline artifact sank inward, absorbed into the raven’s hollowed core like water into sand.
A burst of electromagnetic static erupted outward in concentric rings.
Then the raven vanished.
Leaving just the sharp ozone smell of displaced space-time and the fading crackle of stolen energy.
Cyrus slammed into the destroyed window frame, obsidian scales cracking against twisted metal.
