The Fox And The Last Dragon
Chapter 219: Tides And Twisted Fates
"Look Cyrus, a cave!" Kane pointed toward the cliff face, his nine tails perking up behind him.
"We should check it out. There could be tide pools inside, or maybe some kind of sea grotto with those glowing plankton—"
"It’s an old lava vent," Cyrus cut in smoothly, already steering the kayak away from the opening.
"The air inside is toxic. Volcanic gases."
Kane’s ears drooped.
"Seriously? It looks so cool though." He craned his neck, trying to get a better view before the kayak drifted further down the coastline. "Maybe we could just peek inside real quick—"
"No."
The word came out sharp enough that Kane’s attention snapped back to Cyrus.
Those crimson eyes held something Kane couldn’t quite name—warning, maybe. Or recognition.
It was as if Cyrus knew exactly what that cave contained.
Before Kane could press further, the sky shifted.
Shadows raced across the water as dark clouds rolled in from the horizon, swallowing the sun. The wind picked up, sending small whitecaps dancing across the previously calm surface.
"We should head back," Cyrus said, already turning the kayak toward shore. "Storm’s moving in fast."
Kane glanced between the darkening sky and the mysterious cave entrance, now barely visible through the thickening mist.
His curiosity burned, but the first fat raindrops were already hitting the water around them.
"Fine," Kane muttered, gripping his paddle as the waves began to swell. "But I’m coming back to that cave later."
Cyrus’s only response was to paddle harder toward the beach.
Kane tried to help, but his paddle sliced through the water at awkward angles, fighting against the current instead of working with it.
Each stroke sent them veering sideways, undoing Cyrus’s efforts to steer them toward shore.
"Kane—stop paddling!"
"I’m trying to help!"
A wave slammed into the kayak’s side, sending cold spray across Kane’s face. His grip tightened on the paddle, knuckles white.
The rain intensified, turning from scattered drops into a solid sheet of water that hammered the ocean’s surface.
Visibility dropped to almost nothing—the shore disappeared behind the curtain of grey.
The kayak rocked violently.
Kane’s stomach lurched as another wave hit them broadside, tilting the small craft at a dangerous angle. Water sloshed over the edge, pooling around their feet.
"Cyrus—"
Thunder cracked overhead, so close Kane felt it in his chest.
The kayak spun, caught in a current Kane hadn’t noticed forming.
Cyrus’s paddle dug deep, muscles straining against the water’s pull, but they were moving parallel to the beach now instead of toward it.
The cave entrance emerged from the rain—closer than before. The current was dragging them straight toward it.
Another large wave loomed ahead, its crest white with foam.
The kayak rocked harder, lifting onto one edge. Kane grabbed the sides, his tails wrapping instinctively around the bench.
Then—nothing.
The water went flat. Eerily calm.
"Get ready," Cyrus growled, his large obsidian wings erupting from his shoulders. "I’m flying us—"
Suddenly, a wall of water came from nowhere.
Ten feet high. Maybe fifteen.
It crashed down with the force of a collapsing building.
The kayak flipped.
Kane’s world inverted—sky became sea, air became water, and up became down.
Cold shocked through his system as the ocean swallowed him whole. Salt burned his eyes and nose. His tails tangled around his legs, dragging him deeper.
He kicked hard, lungs already screaming.
Which way was up?
Everything was dark water and churning foam.
His hand broke the surface.
Kane gasped, choking on seawater and rain. A wave slapped him in the face before he could fill his lungs properly.
"Cyrus!"
Another wave pushed him under.
Kane fought toward what he hoped was air, his waterlogged clothes weighing him down like anchors.
Cyrus surfaced with a roar that split the storm.
His wings hung useless and heavy.
There were waterlogged and refused to lift, instead pulling him sideways with each attempt to beat them.
Rain hammered his face as he spun in a circle, searching.
"Kane!"
Nothing.
Just grey water and greyer sky.
Cyrus dove.
His wings tucked tight against his spine as he cut through the churning water.
The ocean pulled at him—currents twisting in directions that made no sense, like invisible hands dragging him toward the cave.
There.
A flash of silver beneath the surface.
Cyrus kicked harder, ignoring the burn in his muscles. His fingers closed around Kane’s wrist just as another current yanked the fox deeper.
Not happening.
Crimson energy flared along Cyrus’s arms, wrapping around Kane like chains of light. He hauled them both upward, breaking the surface with a gasp that tasted of salt and fury.
Kane coughed violently, clinging to Cyrus’s shoulders.
"Got you." Cyrus shifted his grip, one arm locking around Kane’s waist. "Hold on."
The cave entrance loomed closer.
Fighting the current was useless—it pulled with a strength that felt deliberate. Purposeful.
Cyrus stopped resisting.
He spread his wings wide and let the ocean carry them forward, into the darkness of the lava vent.
The cave entrance swallowed them whole.
One moment—chaos. Rain, waves, the ocean’s roar.
The next—stillness.
The storm’s fury became distant thunder echoing off stone walls. Water lapped at the cave’s edge, almost gentle now compared to the violence outside.
Cyrus dragged them both onto a narrow ledge of volcanic rock, his wings dripping with seawater. He collapsed against the cave wall, chest heaving.
Kane rolled onto his hands and knees, retching.
Seawater poured from his mouth in harsh, painful gulps. His tails hung limp and soaked, plastered against the stone.
"Careful..." Cyrus’s voice came rough, edged with exhaustion. "...what you wish for."
Kane coughed again, spitting salt.
"Not—" Another cough. "—funny."
"I wasn’t joking." Cyrus tilted his head back against the stone, crimson eyes half-lidded. "You wanted to explore this cave."
Rain hammered the entrance behind them. The current still churned just beyond the ledge—a living barrier keeping them trapped inside.
Kane wiped his mouth with a shaking hand.
"How long until the storm passes?"
Cyrus’s silence said everything.
They were stuck.
