The Fox And The Last Dragon
Chapter 206: Resurrection, Rewritten, And Revelations
Kane’s vision tunneled, focusing on those three words burned across the screen: Resurrection Protocol.
"Elias isn’t trying to reassemble the crystal," he breathed. "He’s trying to resurrect it."
Rina scrolled down, revealing layers of technical specifications that made Kane’s head spin. Chemical formulas intertwined with ancient spirit glyphs. Molecular diagrams overlaid with draconic symbols.
"He’s documented everything," Rina said quietly. "Every experiment. Every failure. Every breakthrough."
Kane leaned closer, his enhanced senses picking up details even on the digital display. Dates stretched back years—long before Kane had ever investigated Veyr Corp.
"This started before we met," he murmured.
"Look at the material requirements." Rina highlighted a section.
Kane read through the list, his stomach dropping with each line:
Shard essence: Five fragments minimum
Dragon blood: 500ml minimum viable concentration
Divine catalyst: Synthetic alternative under development
Living vessel: Undetermined
His eyes caught on that last line.
"Living vessel," he repeated slowly.
Rina met his gaze, her expression grave.
"Kane," she said carefully. "Look at the test subject designation."
Kane’s eyes tracked to the subject designation column, and his blood turned to ice.
PRIMARY CANDIDATE: Black Dragon (Adult, Pure Bloodline)
SECONDARY CANDIDATE: Black Dragon (Synthetic, Artificial Construct)
TERTIARY CANDIDATE: Black Dragon (Embryonic Stage)
CONTINGENCY: Hybrid Specimens (Dragon-Adjacent Lineage)
"Oh gods," Kane whispered.
The dragon egg. Cyrus. The synthetic dragon they found in the lab.
"Project Chimera wasn’t just about creating super-spirits," Rina said quietly.
"It was about breeding contingency options. Dragon-adjacent hybrids that could serve as vessels if Elias couldn’t acquire a pure bloodline specimen."
Kane’s hands trembled as he scrolled further, finding detailed genetic profiles. His own file sat among them, marked with amber flags.
HYBRID SPECIMEN 47-K: Silver Fox Spirit (Nine-Tailed, Dormant)
Genetic Compatibility: 65% (Dragon-Adjacent)
Status: ACTIVATED - Enhanced Resonance Achieved
Recommendation: Priority Acquisition for Contingency Protocol
Kane’s vision swam. The room tilted.
"He didn’t just kidnap you to lure Cyrus," Rina said softly. "He needed to test your compatibility. To see if forcing your transformation would make you viable."
Kane’s hand shot to his chest, where nine tails now existed beneath his glamour. Elias had injected him with the Screaming Shard essence, not just to torture him—
But to unlock his full potential as a backup vessel.
Kane’s mind raced. Had Elias orchestrated everything from the beginning? The warehouse ambush where Cyrus saved Kane. The karmic bond. The gradual intertwining of their lives.
Or had Cyrus’s intervention been the variable Elias hadn’t anticipated? A wild card that forced him to adapt his plan?
Maybe Elias expected Kane to die in that warehouse. Maybe the bond changed everything.
Kane scrolled down, his breath catching when another name appeared.
HYBRID SPECIMEN 31-G: Serpent Spirit (White, Highborn)
Genetic Compatibility: 72% (Dragon-Adjacent)
Status: MONITORED - Baseline Resonance Stable
Recommendation: Secondary Acquisition if Primary Options Fail
Kane’s finger trembled over Ginsei’s designation.
"Ginsei," he breathed. "He’s tracking Ginsei too."
"And his compatibility rating is higher than yours," Rina observed, leaning closer to the screen.
Kane stared at the numbers. Seventy-two percent. Seven points higher than his own sixty-five.
"I’m not surprised," Rina said quietly. "White serpent spirits are closely related to dragons. Both are mythic-class beings."
Kane had never thought about it that way. Ginsei always seemed like an irritating rival, not a—
Not a potential vessel for a resurrected god.
"Does Ginsei know?" Kane asked.
"I doubt it." Rina scrolled further. "Look at the surveillance dates. Elias has been monitoring him for eighteen months. Long before any of this escalated."
Kane’s mind raced. Ginsei worked at the BSA. Had unrestricted access to classified files. To evidence lockup.
To the Whispering Shard.
"He wouldn’t," Kane said, but doubt crept into his voice.
Rina’s expression remained neutral.
"Ginsei can be ambitious," Rina admitted, drumming her fingers against the desk.
"But white serpent spirits are inherently just. Loyal, even when they seem calculating."
Kane thought about Ginsei’s cold exterior, the way he always operated by the book. How he’d helped them infiltrate Elias’s facility without hesitation. How he’d kept the dragon egg’s existence off official records.
"You’re right," Kane said finally. "I trust him. For now."
He rubbed his temples, forcing himself to focus past the paranoia clawing at his thoughts.
"Let’s recap what we actually know," he said.
"Elias is trying to recreate the Eternal God Crystal. Maybe not the original—that required actual gods—but something functionally similar."
"Agreed." Rina pulled up another file.
"The material requirements are clear. Five shard fragments minimum. Dragon blood in viable concentrations. Some kind of catalyst."
"And a living vessel," Kane finished grimly.
His eyes tracked back to the candidate list. Cyrus. The dragon egg. Himself. Ginsei.
"He’s hedging his bets," Kane continued. "Multiple contingencies. If he can’t get Cyrus, he’ll use the egg. If not the egg, then me or Ginsei."
"Or all of the above," Rina suggested quietly.
"These protocols don’t specify exclusivity. What if the resurrection requires multiple vessels? A network of compatible hosts?"
Kane’s blood chilled.
"Like nodes in a circuit," he whispered.
Rina nodded slowly.
"Dragon at the core. Hybrids amplifying the resonance. It would explain why he deliberately forced your transformation. Why he’s monitoring Ginsei."
"That actually makes sense," Kane admitted, rubbing the back of his neck. "Twisted sense, but sense."
He leaned over Rina’s shoulder, watching the cursor hover over folders within folders.
"What else can you pull from these files? Anything about human hybrids? Augmented soldiers?"
Rina opened another directory, revealing dozens of encrypted documents.
"Give me a second." Her fingers flew across the keyboard, bypassing security protocols.
Files bloomed across multiple monitors.
"Here," she said, highlighting one. "Project Chimera had a human division. Volunteer soldiers augmented with synthetic spirit essence."
Kane scanned the reports, his stomach turning at the casualty rates. Seventy percent rejection. Twenty-five percent unstable mutations. Five percent viable enhancements.
"They’re disposable test subjects," he breathed.
"Worse." Rina pulled up tactical assessments. "They’re foot soldiers. Enhanced humans who can bypass spirit-based security systems."
Kane straightened, pieces clicking into place.
The BSA breach. The penthouse infiltration.
Kane’s jaw tightened.
"What about timelines? Does anything indicate Elias’s next move? Target locations? Acquisition schedules?"
Rina scrolled deeper, then paused.
