The Fox And The Last Dragon

Chapter 181: Green-Gold Requiem

Kane’s fingers closed around Rina’s still hand, her skin cold as winter stone. The flatline’s shrill tone carved through the silence.

"She’s gone." The words escaped him in a broken whisper.

His silver tails drooped, foxfire extinguishing as grief crushed down on his chest.

They’d been so close. The essence had worked—he’d seen the healing light flow through her veins and heard that impossible music.

All for nothing.

Isabelle’s breath hitched, a sound so foreign from the composed ice spirit that

Kane’s head snapped up. Moisture gathered at the corners of her pale blue eyes, threatening to spill.

"I miscalculated," she said, voice fracturing. "The integration ratio, the timing—I should have—"

"You did everything right." Cyrus’s tone remained steady, but Kane caught the tightness around his eyes and the rigid set of his shoulders.

Dragon instincts demanded action, solutions, and conquest over death itself. But even dragons couldn’t resurrect the dead.

Kane stared at Rina’s peaceful face, his mind already spiraling. How would he tell Ginsei? Commander Qi?

The BSA would want answers—why hadn’t Kane reported her disappearance immediately? Why had he taken her to a private corporation instead of Bureau medical?

They’d been so close. The essence had worked, Kane was certain. The light, the music, the way her spirit signature had stabilized...

A faint vibration thrummed through Rina’s fingers.

Kane’s breath caught. "Wait—"

The vibration came again, barely perceptible. Then another, and another, building into a steady harmonic pulse that seemed to emanate from deep within her bones.

The same melody they’d heard during the infusion whispered back to life—distant, ethereal, and growing stronger with each beat.

"The machines," the technician stammered, backing away from the monitors. "They’re not reading anything."

Green-gold light sparked beneath Rina’s skin, tracing delicate patterns along her arms like illuminated veins. The light pulsed in rhythm with the music, forming intricate runes that shifted and danced across her flesh.

The flatline continued its monotone wail, but Kane felt the truth singing through their joined hands.

"She’s not gone," he breathed, silver tails blazing back to life. "The essence—it’s still working."

Luminous symbols spiraled up Rina’s neck, across her cheeks, weaving through her dark hair like living starlight.

Pure spirit resonance beyond any technology’s ability to measure or comprehend.

The Singing Shard’s song grew stronger, filling the sterile room with impossible harmony.

Kane’s foxfire erupted without conscious thought, silver flames dancing around his fingertips as his aura reached toward the dying light within Rina.

The green-gold essence responded instantly, threading through his spirit energy.

Their combined radiance poured into Rina’s chest, seeking the fractures where synthetic compounds had torn her apart.

Kane felt the moment their energies found her fading core—a spark so dim it barely registered, yet stubbornly refusing to surrender.

The Singing Shard’s mercy wrapped around that fragile flame, while Kane’s foxfire fed it strength.

Green and silver spiraled together, rewriting the damaged pathways of her spirit, weaving new connections where others had been severed.

Rina’s back arched off the bed. Her lips parted in a sharp, desperate gasp that shattered the monitor’s flatline.

Her eyes snapped open, blazing with molten gold before fading to their familiar brown. She blinked, confused, her gaze finding Kane’s face.

"Kane?" Her voice came out as barely a whisper, but clear and strong. "What—where am I?"

Kane laughed, a sound caught between relief and hysteria. "You’re safe. You’re alive."

Behind them, Isabelle stood frozen, her usually perfect composure shattered. Her mouth hung slightly open, ice-blue eyes wide with something Kane had never seen from her before—complete, undiluted shock.

"Impossible," she breathed. "The readings... they’re not just stable, they’re perfect."

Cyrus moved to the monitors, his sharp gaze scanning the displays.

"Her spirit signature." His voice carried a note of wonder. "It’s completely harmonized. The synthetic elements aren’t fighting her natural essence anymore—they’re integrated."

"Integrated?" Kane helped Rina sit up.

"The Singing Shard didn’t just heal the damage," Cyrus said, turning from the screens.

"It rewrote her entire spiritual framework. She’s not human with spirit grafts anymore—she’s a true hybrid. Stable and self-sustaining."

Rina flexed her fingers, watching as faint traces of luminescence flickered beneath her skin before disappearing.

"I can feel it," she murmured. "Everything’s... different."

Isabelle finally found her voice. "The decay markers are gone. All of them. Whatever process was fragmenting your core has been completely neutralized."

Rina shifted toward the edge of the bed, determination flashing in her eyes. "I need to—"

Her legs buckled the moment they touched the floor.

Her muscles, caught between corporeal and spirit states for days, had atrophied, unaccustomed to bearing her weight.

Isabelle moved in and caught Rina before she could fall. Ice-cold fingers steadied her with surprising gentleness.

"Easy," Isabelle murmured, her usual crisp authority softening. "Your body needs time to adjust."

Rina leaned against the support, embarrassment coloring her cheeks. "I feel like I’ve been asleep for weeks."

"Close enough," Kane said, his tails swishing with nervous energy.

Rina’s gaze moved between the three of them—Kane’s rumpled clothes and exhausted expression, Cyrus’s rigid posture that couldn’t quite hide his relief, and Isabelle’s uncharacteristic dishevelment.

"You all look terrible," she said quietly, then her voice cracked. "What did you have to go through to save me?"

The weight of everything they’d endured—Elias’s facility, the enhanced wolves, Kane’s transformation, the desperate search for the Singing Shard essence—hung unspoken in the sterile air.

Kane’s hand found hers, squeezing gently. "Nothing we wouldn’t do again."

Isabelle’s professional mask slipped back into place, though her voice remained softer than usual.

"I’ll monitor your recovery personally. The integration process should stabilize within forty-eight hours, and you should regain full mobility by then."

She helped Rina settle back onto the bed, adjusting the pillows.

"Thank you." Rina’s fingers brushed against Isabelle’s hand. "Especially you, Isabelle. When everything was falling apart, when I was fragmenting... I could feel you there. Your presence, keeping me anchored."

Isabelle’s pale blue eyes widened slightly, a flush of something almost vulnerable crossing her features before she composed herself.

"I simply applied the most logical stabilization protocols."

"No." Rina’s grip tightened. "It was more than that."

Kane caught Cyrus’s subtle nod toward the door. They were intruding on something private, something neither woman would acknowledge with an audience present.

"We’ll check on you later," Kane said quietly, his tails curling around him.

Cyrus placed a protective hand on Kane’s lower back.

As they slipped from the room, Kane glimpsed Isabelle sitting beside Rina’s bed, her usual rigid posture finally relaxing.
