The Fox And The Last Dragon
Chapter 132: Threads On The Table
Cyrus’s penthouse welcomed them with its usual pristine silence, marble floors gleaming under soft recessed lighting.
Kane kicked off his shoes the moment they crossed the threshold, sending them skittering across the polished stone.
He stumbled toward the sofa and collapsed face-first into the perfectly arranged cushions, arms sprawling wide as he destroyed their geometric precision.
Cyrus paused in the entryway, watching Kane’s form sink into expensive Italian leather.
Before, such casual destruction of his ordered space would have triggered sharp words, maybe even forcible ejection.
Now he simply sighed, hanging his coat with care while Kane groaned into the cushions.
"These seats are freezing." Kane’s voice came out muffled, face still buried in leather.
"It’s like sitting on an ice cube wrapped in dead cow."
Without a word, Cyrus retrieved a cashmere throw in deep charcoal. He draped it over Kane’s sprawled form, tucking the edges around his shoulders.
Kane made a satisfied sound, burrowing deeper into the warmth.
"I’m going to shower." Cyrus’s fingers lingered briefly on Kane’s silver hair before he stepped away.
"Try not to destroy anything while I’m gone."
Kane lifted his head just enough to stick his tongue out, earning another soft sigh from the dragon.
Cyrus disappeared down the hallway, leaving Kane cocooned in cashmere and contemplating the spiraling chaos of their investigation.
When Cyrus emerged from the shower twenty minutes later, he found his pristine penthouse transformed into a conspiracy theorist’s fever dream.
Kane had commandeered the elegant glass dining table, spreading documents across its surface in chaotic layers.
Maps of Feilun overlapped with printed articles and handwritten notes scattered between coffee-stained napkins from various restaurants they’d visited.
"What is all this?" Cyrus asked, his hair still damp as he surveyed the organized chaos.
Kane looked up from where he was crouched on the floor, surrounded by additional papers.
"I’m connecting the dots." Kane gestured wildly at the makeshift investigation board.
"Look—Madam Xiu’s riddle about halls of stone, Bob’s text about Mercy’s Echo, and this faction symbol from the commission record."
He scrambled to his feet, grabbing a marker to draw connecting lines between different clues.
"The binding agent that’s killing Rina, the sound-dampening case, the fragments that sing or scream—it’s all connected somehow."
Cyrus studied the extensive spread of documents, his eyes moving from the detailed maps to the carefully annotated articles scattered across his dining table.
"When did you prepare all of this?" His voice carried genuine curiosity as he picked up a printed report marked with Kane’s handwriting.
"I didn’t see you printing anything at Veyr Corp today."
Kane froze mid-gesture, his marker still poised over a connection he’d been drawing between two locations on the Feilun city map.
"I’ve been... collecting information." Kane’s voice came out smaller than usual. "Since the warehouse incident. Maybe before."
He set the marker down, suddenly finding the floor fascinating.
"I started mapping things after my apartment got ransacked. The Whispering Shard theft, the trafficking patterns, even some of the Bureau’s closed cases that didn’t make sense."
Cyrus moved closer, noting timestamps on several documents that predated their partnership.
"You’ve been investigating this conspiracy for weeks." It wasn’t a question.
Kane nodded reluctantly.
"I printed most of this at the Bureau during downtime. Some from internet cafes when I didn’t want digital trails."
He gestured at the organized chaos surrounding them.
"I never thought I’d need it all in one place until Rina..." Kane’s voice trailed off, the weight of their friend’s condition settling between them.
Cyrus studied the elaborate web of information Kane had constructed, noting the connections between seemingly unrelated incidents.
The fox had been thorough—more thorough than most Bureau agents would have been.
Color-coded strings connected locations across Feilun, timestamps aligned with precision, and marginal notes revealed insights that spoke to genuine investigative instincts.
"So with all this preparation," Cyrus said, gesturing at the comprehensive display, "are you getting any closer to solving the mystery?"
Kane’s shoulders sagged, the enthusiastic energy draining from his posture.
"No." The word came out flat, defeated.
"I have all these pieces, but they don’t form a picture yet. Just... fragments that might connect to other fragments."
He rubbed his face with both hands, exhaustion finally catching up.
"I keep thinking I’m missing something obvious, but every lead just creates more questions."
Cyrus glanced at the antique clock on his mantelpiece—the digital numbers read 12:47 AM.
They’d been running on adrenaline and determination for hours, chasing leads across the city while worry for Rina gnawed at both of them.
"Kane." Cyrus approached the disorganized investigation, his voice carrying a gentle authority.
"It’s past midnight. We’ve had a very long day."
Kane started to protest, but Cyrus continued.
"The mystery will still be here tomorrow. Come to bed first, little investigator."
The endearment slipped out naturally, causing Kane’s cheeks to flush pink.
"You need rest if you’re going to solve this conspiracy."
Kane looked between his carefully arranged evidence and Cyrus’s extended hand.
"Five more minutes?"
"Now."
"But I need to organize these papers first," Kane protested, gesturing frantically at the scattered documents.
"If I don’t put them back in order, I’ll lose track of the connections I was making."
He started gathering the nearest stack, but Cyrus’s patience had reached its limit.
"The papers will survive until morning."
Before Kane could mount another argument, Cyrus bent down and hoisted Kane over his shoulder like a sack of flour.
"Cyrus!" Kane’s voice pitched higher as he found himself dangling upside down, his view suddenly reduced to the dragon’s back and the marble floor passing beneath them.
"Put me down! I’m not a piece of luggage!"
Kane’s fists drummed against Cyrus’s shoulders, but the dragon’s grip remained steady as he carried his protesting burden down the hallway.
"This is abduction," Kane complained, though his voice lacked real anger.
"I’m a professional investigator, not some—"
"Tired fox who doesn’t know when to quit," Cyrus finished, pushing open the bedroom door with his free hand.
Cyrus deposited Kane onto the bed with surprising gentleness despite his earlier caveman tactics.
Kane huffed but crawled under the silk sheets anyway, his body betraying him by immediately relaxing into the luxurious bedding.
He wriggled deeper into the warmth, glaring at Cyrus’s silhouette in the dim light.
"I hate you."
Cyrus turned off the light with a decisive click.
"Good. Sleep faster."
