“All right, Sister and the prince have something to discuss,” Zhiya sighed inwardly, thinking that Miss Kong was rather straightforward by nature.
Still, Li Zhiwei and Xu Heming had three children together. Whether for the children or for themselves, Zhiya felt that the two of them ought to have a proper talk.
“Hmph! What could that bastard possibly have to say to her? Sister doesn’t want to talk to him at all.” Though Kong Meng’er was displeased, she did not insist on staying and making things difficult for the two of them.
But inwardly, she wondered whether Sister would ask Prince An to return her little disciple.
If he refused, then in a few years, she would follow Sister’s instructions and storm Prince An’s residence to take him back.
He was still too young now. Even if she took him back, there would be nothing she could do with him.
Inside the room, Li Zhiwei and Xu Heming stared at each other.
Seeing how haggard Li Zhiwei looked, Xu Heming’s heart softened somewhat.
Thinking of their three children, Xu Heming knew that even if Li Zhiwei said nothing, these past few months must have been extremely hard on her.
He had never expected that, merely because of something he had said, Li Zhiwei would flee from him for a full nine months.
At the thought of this, even his hardest resolve suddenly melted.
It was his fault. He had not thought things through and had frightened her into hiding from him for nine whole months.
“I’m sorry. When I said I wanted you to give up the children, it was because I was worried you wouldn’t be able to bear it.” Xu Heming looked at Li Zhiwei guiltily and spoke in a low voice.
“Hmph!” Li Zhiwei turned her face away. Only she knew the bitterness she had endured over the past nine months.
What made her angriest was that Xu Heming had taken the children away without so much as a word.
She had not even had a proper look at them yet.
Taking the children away was bad enough, but he had even taken her parents away from her.
At the thought of this, Li Zhiwei could not help but begin to cry softly.
“Don’t cry. You’re still in confinement,” Xu Heming said helplessly.
“Hmph! What does it have to do with you? I’ll cry if I want to!” Li Zhiwei sobbed as she threw a pillow at Xu Heming.
She cursed him inwardly. He even had the nerve to tell her not to cry. If he had not made her sad, how could she have ended up feeling so wronged?
“Madam, if you’re angry, then hit me if you must.” Xu Heming sighed. He was genuinely worried that Li Zhiwei would hurt her eyes from crying.
He also knew that she was angry with him.
He wanted to explain, but Li Zhiwei had never given him the chance before.
“Hmph. You’re Prince An, while I’m merely a merchant’s daughter. How would I dare lay a hand on you?” Li Zhiwei snorted sarcastically.
“In front of you, I’m only your husband. When a husband makes his wife angry, it is only right for her to vent her anger however she wishes.” Xu Heming even placed a whip he had prepared earlier into Li Zhiwei’s hands.
Li Zhiwei stared at the whip in her hands and swallowed.
This…
Could she really hit him?
She looked at Xu Heming. She wanted to strike him, but she was also a little nervous.
Xu Heming, however, gazed at her encouragingly.
“If the princess consort has any grievances, vent them all.”
“Hmph! I’m not falling for your trick.” Li Zhiwei gripped the whip and turned her head away with a snort, unwilling to look at Xu Heming and feeling a little aggrieved.
How could all the pain in her heart be erased with a few lashes?
“Weiwei, think about it. Who was it that made you so hurt and miserable that you had to hide in this little village? Who was it that made you suffer through ten months of pregnancy? Who was it that took the children and your parents away the moment you gave birth? Wasn’t it me? Don’t you want to settle the score with me?”
Xu Heming took Li Zhiwei’s hand and made her look at him as he spoke.
Thinking of all the hardships she had endured over the past few months, how could she not be angry?
It was just that she hesitated to actually swing the whip and retaliate.
Xu Heming’s words, however, rekindled the fury in her heart.
Li Zhiwei picked up the whip and was about to lash out at Xu Heming.
But then she realized that this cunning man had clearly provoked her on purpose.
Could he really think that once she struck him, everything would return to the way it had been?
“Hmph! Don’t think I’ll fall for your trick!” Li Zhiwei angrily threw the whip onto the floor.
She cursed inwardly. That cunning bastard.
“Weiwei, I know you’ve suffered. If you’re angry, then whip me as much as you like, but…” Xu Heming paused and looked at Li Zhiwei.
“Please don’t leave me, all right?”
Xu Heming looked at her with an aggrieved expression.
“Xu Heming, what makes you think I’ll forgive you just because you say a few words?” Li Zhiwei sneered through her tears.
She did not want to forgive him at all. She only wanted to stay as far away from him as possible.
“Weiwei, when you first woke up from your coma, I was worried that a pregnancy would affect your health. That was why I thought you shouldn’t have the child yet. It wasn’t because I didn’t like children.” Xu Heming hurriedly explained.
“Weiwei, compared to the children, I’m even less able to lose you.” Xu Heming looked at Li Zhiwei with reddened eyes and spoke each word clearly.
Li Zhiwei lowered her head and secretly sobbed. In truth, she knew that Xu Heming’s words came from the heart.
It was just that at the time, all she could think about was that she could not lose the children.
Actually, if she had insisted back then, Xu Heming would not have forced the matter. But she had not dared to gamble.
“Who knows if that’s true?” Li Zhiwei replied, still stubbornly refusing to soften.
“Weiwei, the children are waiting for you to return home,” Xu Heming coaxed gently.
At the thought of the children, Li Zhiwei’s eyes reddened. That damned bastard had actually taken all the children away.
He had not left even one with her.
“Why did you take my children away?” Li Zhiwei asked, looking at Xu Heming unhappily.
“I was afraid you would run away again, so I had no choice but to take the children back to the residence first. I wanted to use them to keep you from leaving.” Xu Heming knew that if he said the wrong thing, Li Zhiwei would run away again.
“What are you doing here?” Li Zhiwei did not want to continue with that question and looked at Xu Heming unhappily.
“Weiwei, the children are waiting for their wet nurse.” Xu Heming looked at her with an aggrieved expression.
“Xu Heming, you had the nerve to take the children away, yet you couldn’t even arrange a wet nurse for them?” Li Zhiwei grew anxious the moment she heard this.
The children were still so young. How could they manage without a wet nurse?
“I… I didn’t expect you to give birth so soon. I didn’t have time to arrange for a wet nurse, and I didn’t feel comfortable finding one at the last minute. Weiwei, I was wrong. You can punish me or hit me, but please don’t leave me, all right?” Xu Heming said awkwardly.
“What are you standing there for?” Li Zhiwei rose to her feet and looked at Xu Heming, who was still standing there in a daze. She shouted unhappily.
“Weiwei, why did you get up? Hurry and lie back down. You’re still in confinement—you mustn’t get up.” Xu Heming spoke anxiously.
“You idiot! Weren’t we going back to Prince An’s residence? Are you trying to starve my children?” Li Zhiwei glared at Xu Heming in displeasure.
