Xu Heming was stunned at first, and a faint sense of displeasure welled up in his heart. Why did everyone seem to have eyes only for Li Zhiwei?
Did no one care about him?
Whenever he returned to the residence before, his mother would ask whether he was tired or injured. But this time, the first thing she asked about was Li Zhiwei.
For once, Xu Heming felt jealous.
“What are you standing there for?” The Old Princess looked displeased as she questioned her son, who had remained silent at the side. “You’re always busy, busy, busy. Fine, you don’t have time for this old woman or Qingshi, but after traveling all that way, don’t tell me you’ve actually forgotten that you have a wife?”
The more she spoke, the more convinced The Old Princess became that this must be what had happened. An ominous feeling suddenly rose in her heart. Could her unreliable son have actually left Li Zhiwei behind in Lu City?
The moment she imagined Li Zhiwei waiting all alone in Lu City for Xu Heming to bring her back to the capital, The Old Princess could no longer remain calm.
Xu Heming’s lips twitched. He had to admire the old lady’s imagination. Looking at the way she was carrying on, he thought that if he did not explain himself soon, The Old Princess might very well have a carriage prepared and personally travel to Lu City to bring Li Zhiwei back to the capital.
“Mother, don’t worry. Weiwei has already returned to the capital. She’s safe and sound at the Li residence,” Xu Heming hurriedly explained, afraid that if he said nothing, The Old Princess would continue imagining all sorts of things.
However, after hearing his explanation, The Old Princess became even more displeased.
Li Zhiwei had returned to the capital, yet she had not gone back to Prince An’s residence. What did that mean?
It meant the young couple had quarreled, and Li Zhiwei had returned to her parents’ home in a fit of anger.
Yet her own son had come back alone as if nothing had happened, clearly not taking the reason for Weiwei’s anger seriously.
At the thought of this, The Old Princess glared furiously at Xu Heming. “Did you bully Weiwei? You’re a grown man, and someone was finally willing to marry you, so you should be grateful. Weiwei is just a young girl. Can’t you give in to her once in a while?”
The Old Princess could not help worrying that if Li Zhiwei no longer wanted Xu Heming, where would he ever find another daughter-in-law as obedient and sensible as her?
Xu Heming’s brows drew tightly together. He had to admit that his mother’s mind was filled with far too many ideas.
He had said only one sentence, yet she had managed to imagine an entire pile of nonsense.
How could he possibly bear to quarrel with Li Zhiwei?
Thinking of Li Zhiwei’s current condition, Xu Heming still explained, “Mother, stop letting your imagination run wild. Weiwei is with child, but the pregnancy is unstable. That’s why she’s staying at her parents’ home to rest for now. Once her condition improves, I’ll bring her back to the residence.”
Xu Heming feared that if he did not make things clear soon, The Old Princess might already have imagined him beating Li Zhiwei—or even worked out exactly how he had struck her.
At the thought, Xu Heming felt utterly helpless. He could not help wondering who, exactly, was her biological child.
Other people forgot their mothers once they had wives. How had it become the opposite with him—once she had a daughter-in-law, she forgot her own son?
The Old Princess was stunned when she heard this. Only after a moment did she understand what her son had said.
Li Zhiwei was pregnant?
Wouldn’t that mean she was about to become a grandmother?
“Oh, this is wonderful! I’m finally going to have a precious grandson to hold!” The Old Princess exclaimed excitedly.
“Mother, I’ll love a daughter just as much,” Xu Heming said with a frown, correcting her.
Whether Li Zhiwei gave birth to a boy or a girl, the child would be precious to him.
“I’ll love a granddaughter too!” The Old Princess said, grinning from ear to ear.
She was already considering what kind of gift she should prepare for her grandchild’s first meeting with the family.
Xu Qingshi had just been about to enter the room when he happened to hear the conversation between the two of them.
He suddenly remembered that someone had once told him that once his father and stepmother had a child of their own, they would no longer want him.
At the thought, Xu Qingshi grew gloomy. A voice in his heart reminded him that his father and mother would stop loving him.
After learning that Li Zhiwei was pregnant, The Old Princess no longer paid any attention to her son, who had only just returned. Instead, she had Nanny Luo prepare some gifts and headed to the Li residence.
“Grandmother, I want to go see Mother too.” As The Old Princess was getting into the carriage, Xu Qingshi cautiously tugged at her hand and asked.
The Old Princess glanced at Xu Qingshi. Although she suspected that this grandson was not actually her son’s child, his eyes looked five or six parts like her son’s had when he was young. Because of that, The Old Princess steadied herself and said, “Then you may come along.”
In her heart, she thought that the child had always been close to Li Zhiwei. Besides, everyone in the capital knew that Xu Qingshi was the heir to Prince An. She could not erase his existence simply because of her personal prejudice.
Before Xu Heming had any other children, Xu Qingshi could temporarily hold the position of heir to Prince An. But The Old Princess had also been thinking that if Xu Heming had another child, then the position of heir—
At this thought, The Old Princess looked at the child beside her, whom she had raised with her own hands, and sighed inwardly. Forget it. Children and grandchildren had blessings of their own. From now on, the younger generation could worry about these matters themselves.
Besides, none of the Xu family’s children were useless.
Who occupied the position of heir was no longer that important.
What mattered was that her daughter-in-law was pregnant. In another ten months, there would be another child in the world.
Looking at The Old Princess’s delighted expression, Xu Qingshi felt both nervous and curious. Had Grandmother been just as happy when she learned that his mother was pregnant with him?
However, he did not dare ask. Grandmother did not seem to like his birth mother.
The Old Princess was too caught up in her own happiness to notice the child’s feelings.
When they arrived at the Li residence, The Old Princess hurried inside at a brisk pace.
“Oh, Your Highness, please slow down,” Nanny Tang said, deeply worried that the old lady might fall.
“Have them unload the gifts,” Nanny Tang instructed before quickly hurrying after The Old Princess.
Li Zhiwei was startled when she saw that The Old Princess had come in person.
“Mother, what brings you here?” Li Zhiwei had not seen Xu Heming, and a sense of unease arose in her heart. Could the old lady have come to reprimand her for not returning to Prince An’s residence and demand an explanation?
“Oh, my dear child, lie down,” The Old Princess said gently.
Yet her eyes kept drifting toward Li Zhiwei’s still-flat stomach, as if she could see her beloved grandchild simply by looking hard enough.
“Mother, I’ll return to Prince An’s residence tomorrow,” Li Zhiwei hurriedly said, afraid that The Old Princess might be angry.
She thought that if she told the old lady she would return tomorrow, The Old Princess should not be upset anymore, right?
