Chapter 25: Chapter Twenty-Three: The Guardian Hunt

The red signal appeared at dawn.

Lin Yue stood in the middle of her field, staring at it.

It wasn’t actually red.

There was no physical light.

Instead, the warning existed inside the Golden Space—a glowing crimson symbol floating above the horizon.

It pulsed once.

Then again.

[GUARDIAN AWAKENING CONFIRMED.]

[HUNT PROTOCOL ACTIVATED.]

Lin Yue’s stomach tightened.

"What exactly is the Hunt Protocol?"

The Golden Space remained silent.

"Of course."

She folded her arms.

"You can tell me about ancient civilizations, mysterious seeds, and magical Guardians, but when I ask a useful question, suddenly you’re shy."

Lumi gave a tiny chirp.

Lin Yue looked down.

The little golden Guardian was staring at the red symbol.

Her fur was standing on end.

"You know what it means."

Lumi nodded.

"Is it dangerous?"

A hesitant nod.

"How dangerous?"

Lumi thought.

Then raised one tiny hoof.

Lin Yue waited.

Lumi raised another.

Then another.

Lin Yue stared.

"Three?"

Lumi shook her head.

She raised all four legs.

Lin Yue sighed.

"Very reassuring."

The Message

A second notification appeared.

[WARNING.]

[HUNTERS MAY IDENTIFY GUARDIAN SIGNATURES.]

Lin Yue’s expression changed.

"Identify?"

[CORRECT.]

"How?"

[ANCIENT BIOLOGICAL DETECTION SYSTEMS.]

Lin Yue immediately understood.

"Then the Guardians aren’t simply being hunted."

She looked toward Lumi.

"They’re being tracked."

Lumi lowered her ears.

Lin Yue knelt.

"Can they track you?"

Lumi nodded.

"Can they track the Golden Space?"

Another nod.

Lin Yue’s expression became serious.

"Then we need to hide you."

Lumi shook her head.

Lin Yue blinked.

"No?"

Lumi stomped one hoof.

A golden pulse spread across the soil.

The plants around them brightened.

Lin Yue understood.

"You don’t want to hide."

Lumi shook her head.

"You want to protect the others."

Lumi nodded.

Lin Yue sighed.

"You’ve been here for barely any time at all, and you’ve already developed the same stubbornness as everyone in my family."

Lumi looked pleased.

The Emergency Council

By breakfast, Lin Yue had summoned the family council.

Shen Rui arrived first.

Her parents followed.

Then the village elders.

The agricultural managers.

The engineers.

The medical team.

The communication officers.

Even the printing master came carrying a stack of blank paper.

Lin Yue stood before them.

"We have a problem."

Her stepmother, Madam Zhao, immediately asked:

"How serious?"

"Potentially very serious."

Her father nodded.

"Explain."

Lin Yue placed the map on the table.

Three golden points appeared.

"These are Guardian signals."

Nobody spoke.

Then three red points appeared.

"These are the hunters."

The room became silent.

One elder swallowed.

"How many hunters?"

"We don’t know."

"Soldiers?"

"Possibly."

"Where are they?"

Lin Yue pointed toward the mountains.

"Not here yet."

The commander frowned.

"Then why are we worried?"

Lin Yue looked at him.

"Because they’re searching."

The Wrong Kind of Defense

The commander immediately suggested building watchtowers.

Another suggested increasing patrols.

A third proposed closing the roads.

Lin Yue listened.

Then shook her head.

"No."

Everyone stared.

"No?"

"Not yet."

The commander looked confused.

"Why?"

"Because we’re thinking like soldiers."

She pointed at the map.

"The hunters aren’t necessarily coming for our land."

She tapped the golden markers.

"They’re coming for the Guardians."

"And if we don’t know where the Guardians are?"

Lin Yue smiled faintly.

"Then the first thing we need is information."

The printing-master raised a hand.

"I can print information."

Lin Yue looked at him.

"That wasn’t what I meant."

"Oh."

He lowered his hand.

The Guardian Survey

Lin Yue divided the valley into observation zones.

No soldiers.

No weapons.

No magical equipment.

Just people carrying notebooks.

Farmers.

Herbalists.

Children accompanied by adults.

Bird watchers.

Beekeepers.

Hunters.

Foresters.

Anyone who understood the land.

They were instructed to record unusual phenomena.

Plants appearing where none had been planted.

Animals behaving strangely.

Golden lights.

Unusual dreams.

Changes in water.

Changes in soil.

Strange sounds.

Unexplained tracks.

Lin Yue emphasized:

"Do not touch anything unusual."

"Do not attempt to capture anything."

"And absolutely do not chase glowing animals."

Everyone looked at Lumi.

Lumi looked innocent.

Shen Rui coughed.

"She’s already offended."

The First Report

The first report arrived before noon.

A farmer from the eastern fields had found a patch of flowers.

Silver petals.

Golden stems.

The flowers had appeared overnight.

Lin Yue immediately went to investigate.

She found Lumi waiting at the edge of the field.

The little Guardian stared at the flowers.

Then walked toward them.

Lin Yue followed.

The flowers opened.

A faint golden mist rose.

Lumi touched one.

The entire patch glowed.

Lin Yue crouched.

She examined the soil.

"Interesting."

Shen Rui looked over her shoulder.

"What?"

"The roots."

They weren’t normal.

They connected to neighboring plants.

The flowers were functioning as part of a larger network.

Lin Yue smiled.

"They’re extending the Guardian network."

Lumi nodded.

"Why?"

Lumi looked toward the mountains.

Lin Yue followed her gaze.

Then understood.

"You’re creating safe pathways."

The Living Map

Over the next few days, the strange flowers appeared throughout the valley.

Not randomly.

They formed routes.

From forest to stream.

From stream to meadow.

From meadow to hill.

Each route connected different ecosystems.

Lin Yue mapped them.

The result looked almost like a giant web.

Shen Rui stared at the finished map.

"It’s beautiful."

"It is."

"But what is it?"

Lin Yue touched one golden line.

"A biological sanctuary."

The Guardian network was creating safe migration routes.

Animals could move through protected areas.

Plants could spread naturally.

Water could flow between ecosystems.

And Guardians could travel without exposing themselves.

Lin Yue smiled.

"They’re building their own protection system."

Shen Rui looked impressed.

"You sound proud."

"I am."

The Farmer’s Question

A farmer named Uncle Han approached.

"Lady Lin?"

"Yes?"

"If the Guardians are protecting the land..."

He hesitated.

"Does that mean we have to protect them?"

Lin Yue looked at him.

"Yes."

He nodded.

"Then we will."

The answer came so naturally that Lin Yue was surprised.

"You don’t even know what they are."

Uncle Han shrugged.

"They make the soil better."

He pointed toward his field.

"My harvest doubled."

Another farmer laughed.

"Mine too."

Someone else shouted:

"My orchard has fewer pests!"

Another called:

"My well water is cleaner!"

Lin Yue looked around.

The villagers didn’t care about ancient civilizations.

They cared about the land.

And the land was helping them.

She smiled.

"Then we protect each other."

A New Law

That evening, Lin Yue drafted a new law.

THE VALLEY ECOLOGICAL PROTECTION ACT

It established:

Protected forests.

Protected waterways.

Wildlife corridors.

Seed reserves.

No hunting in Guardian zones.

No uncontrolled logging.

No dumping into streams.

No destruction of old-growth forests without review.

No mining near critical water sources.

And one unusual clause:

Any unexplained magical organism must be reported rather than captured.

Shen Rui read it.

"You actually wrote that."

"Yes."

"People are going to think you’re strange."

"They already do."

He smiled.

"Fair."

The First Hunter

Three days later, the first hunter entered the valley.

He came disguised as a merchant.

He carried cloth.

Tea.

Salt.

Metal tools.

Nothing unusual.

He smiled politely.

He paid his taxes.

He complimented the local bread.

He even bought Moon Wheat.

But Lumi noticed him.

The little Guardian was sleeping in Lin Yue’s garden when suddenly her eyes opened.

She stared toward the eastern road.

Then growled.

Lin Yue looked up from her book.

"What’s wrong?"

Lumi stood.

Her golden mark glowed.

Lin Yue immediately closed the book.

"Where?"

Lumi pointed.

Lin Yue stood.

"Shen Rui."

He appeared moments later.

"What happened?"

"We have a visitor."

The Merchant

The merchant introduced himself as Wei.

He was perhaps forty.

Plain clothing.

Ordinary face.

Calm manner.

Lin Yue watched him carefully.

He was too careful.

His boots were clean despite traveling a muddy road.

His hands had no calluses.

Yet he claimed to have spent twenty years traveling between farming villages.

Lin Yue smiled.

Interesting.

She invited him to dinner.

Shen Rui looked at her.

She whispered:

"Don’t arrest him."

"Why?"

"I want to know what he’s looking for."

Shen Rui nodded.

Dinner

Wei praised the farm.

"You have an impressive operation."

Lin Yue smiled.

"We work hard."

"I noticed."

He looked around.

"You have unusual irrigation."

"Improved irrigation."

"Your grain storage is remarkably efficient."

"We’ve had problems with spoilage."

"And your printing press?"

Lin Yue paused.

"You’ve seen it?"

"Everyone has."

He smiled.

Lin Yue smiled back.

"Of course."

He drank his tea.

"You’ve developed quickly."

"Have we?"

"For a rural settlement."

Lin Yue studied him.

"Where are you from?"

"North."

"Which city?"

He named one.

Lin Yue knew the city.

His accent didn’t match.

Interesting.

She asked another question.

He answered smoothly.

Too smoothly.

Lumi quietly crawled beneath the table.

Then sniffed his boot.

The merchant froze.

Just for half a second.

Lin Yue noticed.

So did Shen Rui.

The Test

After dinner, Lin Yue gave the merchant a small bag.

"Some Moon Wheat."

Wei accepted it.

"Thank you."

"Take it home."

He smiled.

"I will."

Lin Yue watched him leave.

Shen Rui waited until the door closed.

"Hunter?"

"Probably."

"Why?"

"He asked about the irrigation system."

"That doesn’t prove anything."

"He asked about the printing press."

"Still nothing."

"He knew the Moon Wheat was special before I mentioned it."

Shen Rui’s expression changed.

Lin Yue nodded.

"And he never once asked about the Guardians."

Shen Rui frowned.

"That makes him suspicious?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because someone who knows nothing about them wouldn’t avoid the subject."

The Tracking Experiment

Lin Yue followed him.

Not herself.

She sent three trackers.

A farmer.

A hunter.

And Lumi.

Lumi was the smallest.

And apparently the best.

The merchant left the village.

He traveled east.

Then north.

Then stopped beside a stream.

He took something from his pocket.

A small metal device.

It began glowing red.

Lumi’s fur stood on end.

Lin Yue watched from behind a tree.

The device emitted a pulse.

The Guardian flowers nearby wilted.

Lin Yue’s eyes widened.

"That’s the detection system."

Shen Rui whispered:

"Can you disable it?"

"Not safely."

"What does it detect?"

"Guardian energy."

The merchant turned.

Lin Yue immediately ducked.

He looked around.

Then smiled.

"Come out, Keeper."

Silence.

He laughed.

"You’re not as difficult to find as you think."

The Trap

Lin Yue stepped out.

Shen Rui followed.

The merchant smiled.

"I was wondering how long it would take."

"Who are you?"

"You already know."

"No."

"You’re smarter than that."

Lin Yue crossed her arms.

"Try me."

He sighed.

"My name is Wei Jian."

"Who do you serve?"

"The people who built the Hunt Protocol."

"Who are they?"

He smiled.

"That’s the question everyone asks."

"And?"

"They don’t have one name."

Lin Yue frowned.

"Then who?"

Wei looked toward the mountains.

"The Order of the Red Root."

Lumi suddenly growled.

Wei’s expression changed.

"There you are."

The Chase

Wei activated the device.

Red light exploded through the forest.

Lumi cried out.

Lin Yue grabbed her.

"Run!"

Shen Rui drew his sword.

The device began humming.

Something moved through the trees.

Not soldiers.

Machines.

Small mechanical insects.

They crawled over branches.

Searching.

Lin Yue stared.

"Ancient drones."

"Can you stop them?"

"Maybe."

She grabbed a handful of wet soil.

Then remembered something.

"Water."

Shen Rui understood.

They ran toward the stream.

Lin Yue threw the device into the water.

Sparks exploded.

The mechanical insects stopped.

Wei cursed.

"You don’t understand what you’re doing!"

Lin Yue shouted back:

"I understand enough!"

The Red Root

Wei didn’t chase them.

Instead, he stood beside the stream.

"You think the Guardians belong to you?"

Lin Yue stopped.

"No."

"Then why protect them?"

"Because they’re alive."

Wei laughed.

"You’ve learned nothing."

"What does that mean?"

"The Guardians are not merely creatures."

Lin Yue looked at Lumi.

"I know."

"They are keys."

"To what?"

Wei smiled.

"The Root."

Then he disappeared into the forest.

The Root Beneath the World

That night, Huang Ming appeared in the Golden Space.

Lin Yue immediately demanded answers.

"What is the Root?"

Huang Ming looked at Lumi.

His expression softened.

"The oldest living network on this continent."

"How old?"

"Older than the cities."

"Older than the Central Engine?"

"Yes."

Lin Yue stared.

"What does it do?"

"It connects ecosystems."

She looked at Lumi.

"The Guardians are part of it."

"Yes."

"And the Red Root wants control of it."

Huang Ming nodded.

"Why?"

Huang Ming’s expression became grim.

"Because whoever controls the Root can influence every living ecosystem connected to it."

Lin Yue’s blood ran cold.

"Crops?"

"Yes."

"Forests?"

"Yes."

"Water systems?"

"In some places."

"Animals?"

"To a limited extent."

Lin Yue clenched her fists.

"So they could control food."

"Yes."

"And starve entire regions."

"Yes."

She looked at Lumi.

"That is why they’re hunting the Guardians."

The Wrong Question

Lin Yue paced.

"How do we defeat them?"

Huang Ming shook his head.

"That is the wrong question."

She stopped.

"What should I ask?"

"How do we make control impossible?"

Lin Yue went silent.

Then slowly smiled.

"I know."

Huang Ming looked surprised.

"What?"

"Decentralization."

She returned to the map.

"If the Root is one network, we divide access."

Huang Ming frowned.

"You cannot divide the Root."

"No."

Lin Yue pointed to the valley.

"But we can make sure no single person controls the ecosystems connected to it."

She began writing.

Community seed banks.

Independent farms.

Multiple water sources.

Distributed grain stores.

Local councils.

Open agricultural knowledge.

Redundant communication.

Shared ownership.

Local manufacturing.

Education.

She looked at Huang Ming.

"They can’t control what nobody owns."

Huang Ming smiled.

"Now you understand."

The Golden Space Changes Again

The Golden Space suddenly brightened.

A massive tree appeared on the horizon.

Its roots stretched across the landscape.

Its branches touched the sky.

Lumi ran toward it.

The tree opened its golden leaves.

A new message appeared.

[ROOT NETWORK SIMULATION AVAILABLE.]

Lin Yue stared.

"You’re giving me a simulation?"

[CORRECT.]

She smiled.

"Finally."

The system displayed an enormous map.

She could see soil.

Water.

Plants.

Animals.

Energy flows.

Everything connected.

Lin Yue’s eyes widened.

This was better than any textbook.

Better than any laboratory.

She could study an entire ecosystem in real time.

She whispered:

"This changes everything."

The Family Dinner

The next evening, Lin Yue explained everything to her family.

Her stepmother listened.

Her father listened.

Shen Rui listened.

Finally, her father asked:

"So what are you going to do?"

Lin Yue smiled.

"Build."

Her stepmother laughed.

"Of course."

"What else would I do?"

"You could rest."

"No."

"You could take a holiday."

"No."

"You could stop adopting mysterious magical creatures."

Lin Yue looked at Lumi.

Lumi was chewing a cabbage leaf.

Lin Yue sighed.

"No promises."

Everyone laughed.

The New Project

Lin Yue opened a fresh notebook.

On the first page, she wrote:

THE ROOT PROJECT Goal:

Create a resilient civilization that cannot be controlled through control of food, water, knowledge, or magical infrastructure.

Then she added:

Agriculture.

Water.

Sanitation.

Education.

Manufacturing.

Printing.

Accounting.

Engineering.

Ecology.

Governance.

Community ownership.

Shen Rui looked over her shoulder.

"You’ve just created another enormous project."

Lin Yue smiled.

"Yes."

"How long will it take?"

She considered.

"Probably my entire life."

He nodded.

"Then I’ll help."

She looked at him.

"You don’t even know what the project involves."

"I know."

"What?"

"You."

Lin Yue became silent.

Shen Rui smiled.

"So I’ll help."

Her cheeks warmed.

She quickly returned to her notebook.

"Fine."

A Small Promise

Later that night, Lin Yue stood beside the Moon Wheat fields.

Shen Rui joined her.

The moon was bright.

Lumi slept nearby.

The farm was peaceful.

For now.

Shen Rui quietly said:

"You know, you don’t have to carry everything yourself."

Lin Yue looked at him.

"I know."

"Do you?"

She smiled.

"I’m learning."

He held out his hand.

She looked at it.

Then placed hers in his.

No grand confession.

No dramatic declaration.

Just two people standing beneath the moonlight.

Building something together.

The Red Root Awakens

Far beyond the valley, beneath an abandoned mountain city, Wei Jian entered a hidden chamber.

Three figures waited.

All wore crimson robes.

At the center stood an enormous machine.

Ancient.

Broken.

But still breathing.

Wei knelt.

"The Keeper has awakened a Guardian."

One figure asked:

"Which one?"

"The Worldseed."

Silence.

Then:

"Impossible."

"She has activated the Root."

Another figure stepped forward.

"Then begin the second phase."

Wei hesitated.

"What about the valley?"

"Leave it."

"Why?"

The figure smiled.

"Because the valley is not our target."

Wei looked confused.

"Then what is?"

The figure placed a hand against the ancient machine.

Deep beneath the earth—

something enormous moved.

"Our target..."

he whispered,

"...is the Golden Space itself."

The machine awakened.

Across the continent, ancient red symbols began glowing.

One by one.

And beneath Lin Yue’s farm—

the Golden Root answered.

Thump.

Lumi’s eyes opened.

Thump.

Lin Yue woke suddenly.

Thump.

The entire Golden Space shook.

A message appeared before her.

[ROOT NETWORK UNDER ATTACK.]

Then another.

[GOLDEN SPACE BREACH DETECTED.]

Lin Yue sat upright.

"What?"

The final message appeared.

[UNKNOWN ENTITY ATTEMPTING ENTRY.]

She immediately summoned Lumi.

The little Guardian appeared beside her.

Her golden eyes burned brightly.

Lin Yue looked toward the horizon.

For the first time since receiving the Golden Space—

she saw something there that had never existed before.

A black crack.

Stretching across the sky.

Something was trying to enter.

Lin Yue clenched her fists.

"Not my farm."

The crack widened.

Shen Rui appeared behind her.

"What is that?"

Lin Yue stared at the darkness.

Then smiled coldly.

"Apparently..."

She picked up her shovel.

"...we have pests."
