Chapter 2052: The Dana Space Has Formed

Then, the backlash of the broken Soul Bond hit.

Karl staggered as it felt like every molecule of his body, and every point in all five dimensions of his power matrix was struck by lightning at the same time.

It was pure agony, and his mind faded for a moment, as he contained the backlash to keep it out of the beast spaces. Dana’s was just forming now, and he couldn’t risk destabilizing it with the backlash of the bond.

Karl nearly collapsed under the backlash, so Leon placed a padded chair from his inventory under the Pet Sitter, and settled him down to work through the pain of severing a Soul Bond.

This would be the hardest part.

If that backlash had hit Dana, it would have killed her instantly.

However, the System would help Karl through it. Not just because he had damage reduction skills that worked on everything, but because he was the Avatar of the World Dragon, and it was exceedingly difficult to kill an Avatar that still had the favour of their God.

And this should actually improve his favour, not decrease it.

The word in the Upper Planes was that the World Dragon also kept his wife as a pet, as it was the closest bond that he could form, and the Soul Bond spell was a newer one, designed by the White Dragons barely two hundred thousand years ago.

The Seraphim remembered. They didn’t share all their memories like some species did, but the species was one of order, usually born in the rank that they would forever remain at, to provide structure to the Upper Planes.

Forgetting was not in their nature.

Silently, he called in Luminaria, the White Dragon among the Supreme members of the Darklight Host, as his own skills were not going to be able to keep up with the damage that Karl was taking, and Tian was also falling behind.

Holy Magic was best for spiritual damage, but breaking a Soul Bond brought Divine Punishment level backlash. It was not meant to be escaped or mitigated, but Leon knew that the victims could be healed through it.

It was precisely this effect that gave the spell the reputation that Soul Bonded partners died together. If one died permanently, the other would suffer this backlash.

The white dragon appeared next to the Seraphim and shook her head.

"Only Karl would try this insane stunt. Most would have just suggested that she alter her bloodline to that of a Stonefur Divine Fox, so that she would live until he was at least Supreme."

Leon shrugged at the Dragon. "We worked out a spell that will bond her like a beast master’s beast. It seems to have stabilized her soul, and she’s safely in her space, I think. If she wasn’t safe, at least one of the beasts would be panicking by now, but they’re all just sitting here watching.

What can you do for Karl? He should survive the backlash, but I can’t do much to heal him."

Luminaria sighed and transformed into dragon form, so that she could bathe Karl in the healing breath of a white dragon, while she cast [Soul Rejuvenation] on him.

She did briefly consider casting a [Transmigration] spell on him, so that he would reappear in a new body with a soul that was undamaged, but knowing the Karl, that would only make things worse, and very well might unleash a pureblooded Ancient upon this Immortal world.

That would be a worst case scenario for everyone else around them, and only the badger would think that outcome was entertaining.

However, if he was already taking sentient pets, Karl couldn’t be that far off from becoming an Ancient. He had already transformed to look nearly like one. Much smaller than a real one, but very similar in appearance.

What had actually happened was that the backlash had wiped every spell effect and passive buff from him, nearly severing him from the System entirely.

So, he could rely on a Peerless Grade constitution to keep his body intact, but he couldn’t hold his form, and he couldn’t do anything himself that would undo the damage he suffered. Then, he felt the healing breath of the white dragon flow over his body, and spread the thin wings on his back, catching as much as possible.

The power flowed into him, slowly rejuvenating his damaged soul, which caused the backlash to intensify.

However, Karl could see the thread of the link rapidly unravelling, and knew that it was only a matter of time before the damage had all been inflicted and the backlash had run its course. Healing him was only accelerating the process.

In a way that was a good thing, and he wasn’t taking any more damage than he was before.

However, he still felt all the pain that would have come from the backlash, had it not been healed. And the faster that it ended, the better that it was for him, so Karl didn’t try to say anything, and simply focused on maintaining the stability of his internal energy, his power matrix and his soul.

Then, he realized that there was an actual way to mitigate most of the damage.

His power matrix was set in five dimensions. The fourth was time. He could actually spread that damage out, and have the backlash hit his Power Matrix over the course of hours instead of minutes.

But that felt a bit too masochistic to him.

He wasn’t in danger of dying, so there really wasn’t a reason to change the way that he was handling the backlash. If he were, then this would be an amazing hack, and he would have to tell Remi all about it, in case she could come up with a Runic Potion that would mitigate soul damage and spiritual curses.

Time element magic might be beyond them, but they could definitely use runes describing the fourth dimension to spread the damage out and allow natural resistance or lesser healing potions to overcome it.
