The Fire Of Divinity
Chapter 32: I Am Smarter And Better.
She stomped on his shattered spine even harder as she said, "Until you evolve, you’re to hop when I say so and dance when I ask for it. Do you understand me?"
"Yes, Big Boss," he said through the pain.
"Good," she said as she removed her foot from his abdomen.
Then she turned and began walking away, saying, "Now follow me."
There was a gaping wound in his stomach. He was bleeding all over, and the pain was blinding, but he still pushed himself to obey the order.
He turned over and tried to get on all fours to stand up. But his spine was damaged, and he couldn’t control his legs. So he could only manage to crawl after her with his arms.
Dragging his incomplete leer body across the ground created friction that ground against his wounds, causing more pain. But as bad as it was, he didn’t dare to stop.
He was too afraid to disobey her, and it had something to do with that time he saw her put her arm down Robert’s throat to pull out a chicken leg he wasn’t supposed to eat.
He didn’t want her to push her fingers into his neck to grip his spine and pull him with it. So he didn’t dare to let his spine heal before following her.
Meanwhile, the gluttony worm was shouting in his mind, saying, "That bitch. I’ll kill her one day."
"Shut up," he roared in annoyance. "This is your fault, you know that?"
"Of course not," the worm said, denying it with an offended shriek.
It didn’t stop at denial. It even said, "This is your fault. You refused to let me eat that girl, so I refused to let you stand up."
"You can’t just control our body to do what you like. You have to do what I want once in a while, or I will make it impossible for you to do anything."
"How do you like it now, when I arrest the body?" it asked with a sneer.
He thought he was roaring at the top of his mental lungs, but it turned out he was wrong because he shouted even louder as he said, "You fool."
"I refused to eat that girl to help us pass. What I did was for our good. And as it turned out, I was right when I said we shouldn’t eat anything."
"But look at you. You refused to let me stand just to spite me. You heard Tessa say that we would have failed if we ate the girl, and you still refused to let me control my body."
"What does that make you?" he asked with a sneer.
Before the worm could reply, he said, "It makes you a fool. Not only are you stupid, but you’re also too stubborn to admit that you’re stupid."
"I’m not stupid. I was just hungry and angry," it retorted stubbornly.
"Whatever," he said with a mental snort. "You’re always hungry and angry. If you continue to throw your tantrums, this is the kind of thing we’ll get."
"I, on the other hand, am always calm and collected. I am also smarter than you. This is why I should be the one making all of the decisions."
"No," came the instant response.
"Do you want more of this kind of pain? Or do you want us to eat what we shouldn’t eat and be killed for it? You do know that we will be hunted and killed if we lose control, right?" he asked, his voice dripping with disdain.
The worm stayed silent for a while, unable to answer. So Alexander pressed, saying, "You do know that if we had done what you wanted, we would be dead by now, right?"
"And you do know that I like eating food too. I like growing stronger and eating, so growing stronger by eating is the best for me. So you won’t starve to death with me in control."
His words finally reached the worm, and it said, "Fine. You win, for now. But I’m watching you."
When he heard this, he thought, ’At least something good came out of the worm eating my mind. It can become smarter, and I can finally reason with it.’
By now, his spine had healed somewhat so that he could crawl on all fours. He still couldn’t stand yet, though. Tessa’s attack had been very thorough, and it showed just how easily she could have killed him.
"Look at what you did to us?" he grumbled in frustration once again.
With a mental eye roll, it said, "Why are you only blaming me? You should blame Tessa too."
"In fact, you should blame her more. She was the one who stomped your spine out of your back, not me."
"Tessa wouldn’t have done this to me if you had listened to me, so I blame you," he said, snorting in anger.
"What more do you want from me? I already said you were right. Do you want me to apologize too?" the worm asked sarcastically.
Even though he knew it was unlikely, Alexander didn’t hesitate to say, "I would appreciate an apology if you have it."
"Dream on," the worm said with disdain.
So Alexander could only continue to grumble, saying, "Look at me. A great and powerful Apostle forced to walk in the posture of some animal."
He felt that it was humiliating to crawl on all fours and didn’t hesitate to use it to berate the worm. But for what it was worth, no one batted an eye at the scene of an Apostle crawling over the ground.
No one mocked him either. Squires and servants didn’t dare to mock him, and Small Bosses didn’t dare to make fun of him for fear of drawing Tessa’s ire.
The Small Bosses kept their heads low and minded their business so that Tessa wouldn’t throw them through a wall and stomp through their abdomen to teach them a lesson. But they would surely make fun of him when the Big Bosses were no longer around.
