The Extra Who Inherited Ragnarok
Chapter 167: The Ancient Prisoner
Something climbed out of the abyss.
At first, Noah saw fingers.
They were thin, blackened, and wrapped in golden chains. Each finger dug into the edge of the broken realm, widening the opening beneath the battlefield. A low scraping sound rose from the darkness, followed by a breath that carried the weight of centuries.
The Watcher recoiled.
Its enormous body twisted backward, three eyes narrowing.
UNKNOWN PRESENCE DETECTED.
THREAT ASSESSMENT: IMPOSSIBLE.
The notification flickered.
ERROR.
The ancient figure pulled itself upward.
Only its upper body had emerged, yet its presence pressed against the entire realm. Its armor resembled the entity’s golden-black plating, though older and severely damaged. Rust-colored chains pierced its shoulders and disappeared into its back.
Its head remained bowed.
Noah felt a strange pressure against his mind.
Not an attack.
A memory trying to surface.
I know this place.
He saw flashes of a ruined battlefield. A red sky. Figures kneeling before a sealed gate. Someone screaming while golden chains wrapped around their body.
And a voice whispering:
Do not let the inheritor wake.
The vision vanished.
Noah stumbled.
Dead Zone caught his arm.
"Stay focused."
"You felt that too?"
"I felt something looking through you."
The ancient figure slowly raised its head.
Unlike the masked entity, it had a face.
Or what remained of one.
Cracks ran across its pale skin, exposing a dull golden glow beneath. Its eyes were sealed shut by thin black stitches. A crown of broken metal surrounded its skull.
When it spoke, the realm shook.
"Who opened the door?"
The entity beneath the floor stepped forward.
"I did."
The ancient prisoner’s stitched eyes turned toward it.
For several seconds, neither moved.
Then the prisoner laughed.
The sound was dry and hollow, like stones grinding beneath a collapsing mountain.
"You still wear that shape."
The golden-black entity’s hand tightened.
"And you still speak as though your chains are a throne."
The Watcher suddenly attacked.
Its massive spear dissolved into hundreds of crimson needles, which shot toward the ancient prisoner. The prisoner raised one hand.
Every needle stopped.
Not in the air.
Inside its palm.
The crimson weapons sank into its flesh, but no blood emerged. The prisoner closed its fingers, crushing the needles into sparks.
The Watcher shrieked.
Its body split apart, attempting to retreat into the crimson sky.
The prisoner finally opened its eyes.
Two empty golden sockets stared upward.
"Obedient things should not interrupt old conversations."
A wave of force struck the Watcher.
Its enormous body was ripped from the realm and dragged into the sky wound. The six crimson forms collapsed into one, struggling against invisible pressure.
WATCHER INTEGRITY: 42%.
RETREAT PROTOCOL DENIED.
The Watcher’s eyes snapped toward Noah.
For a moment, its attention was not analytical.
It was desperate.
Roana’s voice reached him again.
"Noah! Run!"
The connection flickered, revealing her physical surroundings.
Roana was on her knees in the forest, crimson threads digging into her arms. The Watcher’s body loomed behind her, its shape distorted by the battle. She gripped the threads with trembling hands, trying to sever them.
A shadow moved behind the trees.
Something was approaching her.
Noah tried to reach toward the vision.
"Roana!"
Her head lifted.
Their eyes met through the fractured connection.
She looked startled.
Not because he had heard her.
Because she had seen what stood behind him.
Her expression drained of color.
"Noah," she whispered. "Whatever you do..."
The connection began collapsing.
"Don’t let that thing learn your name."
The vision vanished.
The ancient prisoner turned its empty gaze toward Noah.
A faint smile appeared across its cracked face.
"Too late."
The golden chains beneath the realm began tightening.
And somewhere deep inside Noah’s body, something answered.
Something answered.
Noah felt it beneath his ribs, beneath the golden light, beneath the crimson core that had always seemed to belong to Dead Zone.
It was not a voice.
It was a heartbeat.
One pulse.
The entire realm shook.
A second pulse.
The golden chains beneath the floor snapped taut, dragging the ancient prisoner backward. Its cracked smile disappeared as its body sank several inches into the abyss.
Dead Zone turned toward Noah. "What did you do?"
"Nothing."
A third pulse.
Noah’s wounds erupted with golden light. The spear embedded in his hands disintegrated, leaving behind burning symbols that crawled up his arms. His body convulsed as an unfamiliar pressure pushed outward from his chest.
The system appeared.
UNKNOWN SIGNATURE RESPONDING.
IDENTIFICATION ATTEMPT: FAILED.
HOST AUTHORITY: DISPUTED.
WARNING: INTERNAL PRESENCE APPROACHING SURFACE.
Noah dropped to one knee.
Dead Zone reached for him, but the golden light violently repelled its hand.
"Don’t touch me!"
The words came from Noah’s mouth.
But the voice was wrong.
Deeper.
Older.
The ancient prisoner stopped struggling against its chains.
Its stitched eyes opened wider.
"Impossible."
The golden-black entity turned sharply. "You recognize it?"
The prisoner’s gaze remained fixed on Noah.
"That name was erased."
Noah clutched his chest. "What name?"
The pressure inside him increased.
Images flashed through his mind.
A massive hall illuminated by dying stars. A circle of figures standing around a sealed child. Three thrones covered in chains. A black sword lying across the floor.
And a name carved into the stone.
The letters blurred whenever Noah tried to read them.
He saw only the final symbol.
A jagged mark resembling a broken crown.
The vision shattered.
Noah screamed.
The Watcher, still trapped within the crimson wound in the sky, suddenly began moving again. Its body stretched across the opening, crimson threads pulling against the ancient prisoner’s invisible force.
WATCHER INTEGRITY: 42% → 67%.
NEW OBJECTIVE: EXTRACT INTERNAL PRESENCE.
The Watcher’s three eyes focused on Noah.
Not on Dead Zone.
Not on the ancient prisoner.
On the thing beneath Noah’s skin.
Its body compressed into a narrow spear of crimson light and launched downward.
Dead Zone moved first.
He stepped between Noah and the descending attack, Shadowfang raised in both hands.
"Get away from him!"
The spear collided with the sword.
The impact drove Dead Zone into the ground.
Cracks spread beneath his feet.
Noah forced himself upright, golden light spilling from his mouth and eyes. His consciousness felt unstable, stretched between two opposing forces.
Dead Zone was fighting outside.
Something else was waking inside.
The ancient prisoner pulled against its chains.
"Listen carefully, inheritor."
Noah looked toward it.
"Your body is not the prison."
The prisoner’s head tilted.
"Your name is."
The Watcher’s spear began piercing through Shadowfang.
Dead Zone snarled and pushed back.
The golden-black entity raised its damaged hand, preparing to strike.
And deep within Noah’s chest, the unknown heartbeat stopped.
For one terrifying second, everything became silent.
A voice whispered directly into Noah’s mind.
May I come out now?
Noah’s golden eye widened.
He knew that voice.
Not from a memory.
Not from a dream.
From somewhere he had been running from his entire life.
"No," Noah whispered.
The thing inside him laughed.
The Watcher’s spear shattered.
And Noah’s shadow opened its eyes.
