Chapter 81: Chapter 81: The Empress Dowager Covets You

Feng Qing looked at him like this, and in the end, couldn’t bear it. She couldn’t help but speak up, "The Emperor is now of age and should be regent. Why does the Prince not return power to the Emperor? Holding onto the court like this will only make more people rise against you. Those people all want to step on you to climb up."

"They are well aware that sooner or later, the Prince will return power to the Emperor. They just come out against the Prince now to register themselves in front of the Emperor. Once the Emperor takes charge, these people will be meritorious ministers. Why does the Prince want to be someone else’s stepping stone."

As Feng Qing finished speaking, Rong Ling, who had been keeping his eyes closed, suddenly opened his phoenix-like eyes. A chilling light burst forth from his eyes, filling the carriage with a cold atmosphere.

Feng Qing suddenly realized she had said too much and secretly regretted it, wondering why she couldn’t control her own mouth.

However, surprisingly, Rong Ling, who was on the soft couch, did not blame her. He merely glanced at her calmly and then withdrew his gaze. Surprisingly, he even spoke a few words.

"Do you think I don’t want to return power to the Emperor? Although the Emperor is of age, his nature is docile and indecisive. The courtiers of Dayan are strong. If the Emperor were to become regent, it would form a situation where the subjects are strong and the ruler is weak. Moreover, the Empress Dowager is shrewd, and the Su Family is powerful. Do you know that my two brothers still remain at their posts as feudatories?"

"If the Emperor were to become regent, those two might stir up trouble. Besides these, the Northern Land of Dayan has the Twelve Tribes eyeing us covetously. Those Twelve Tribes were originally composed of fugitives from several countries, each more ferocious than the last."

"Internal strife and external threats — if the Emperor becomes regent, within three years, Dayan will undoubtedly fall into chaos. How could I return power to the Emperor?"

After finishing, Rong Ling realized something wasn’t right. What was he doing discussing this with a woman like Feng Qing? Perhaps it was because these thoughts had been bottled up with no one to confide in.

"Forget it, why am I telling you all this?"

After saying this, he collected his emotions and reverted to being the aloof and inaccessible Prince Regent.

Feng Qing hadn’t expected that the seemingly powerful Dayan had so many worries. Thus, the reason Rong Ling held onto the court was to prevent Dayan from falling into chaos. Yet, the Little Emperor and the Empress Dowager believed he wanted to seize their position.

Not only them, but there were probably many in the court who thought the same. He was truly putting in hard work without any appreciation.

While Feng Qing was thinking this, Rong Ling, from the soft couch, suddenly asked, "Earlier in the hall, judging by the Empress Dowager’s expression, was she harboring murderous intent toward me?"

Rong Ling hadn’t spoken until now, but once he did, Feng Qing remembered what she had observed earlier and didn’t know what to say.

Rong Ling turned to look at her, noticing her strange expression.

"What’s the matter?"

Feng Qing pursed her lips and said, "Maybe I shouldn’t say anything. I’m afraid I’ll suffer misfortune if I speak."

Rong Ling’s phoenix eyes instinctively narrowed, filled with a dark chilling light, "Speak."

Feng Qing looked at Rong Ling and said, "I’m afraid if I tell you, you won’t believe me, and I’ll suffer misfortune. I swear I am not lying, but you might not believe it."

The more Rong Ling listened, the stranger it sounded. He shifted slightly to sit up straight, looked at Feng Qing, and said, "Speak, I will not blame you."

"You said it yourself, you can’t blame me."

After Feng Qing finished, she still didn’t feel assured and added, "I guarantee what I say is absolutely true, but you cannot take your anger out on me."

The more Rong Ling listened, the more something felt wrong. Seeing Feng Qing dilly-dallying, his expression grew colder.

"Speak quickly."

As soon as Feng Qing heard this, she felt a chill down her spine and quickly said, "Prince, the Empress Dowager, she covets you."
