Chapter 310: Chapter 257: Hunting the Black Goat (Part 2)

Han Su sat up, staring at the door, waiting for him to come.

SQUEAK!

The door was gently pushed open.

A small, skinny boy with a turban wrapped around his head, which made it look a size larger, appeared silently at the doorway.

When he realized Han Su was in the room, watching him quietly, he seemed to startle for a moment.

Han Su smiled at him and said, “Where’s your mother?”

The little boy blinked but didn’t answer Han Su’s question.

But in those dark, clear eyes, a hint of greed seemed to surface, and a GULP sounded from his throat.

Faintly, his eyes seemed to transform into the yellowish-brown horizontal pupils of a goat.

“CRUNCH… CRUNCH…”

The faint chewing sound started up again. Han Su finally recognized it; it was the sound of a goat chewing fodder. It was as if a goat were munching on fresh grass right beside his ear, but he couldn’t see it.

The little boy, who was staring intently at him, slowly raised his hands and began to unwind the turban from his head.

Layer by layer, slowly, the turban came off, revealing two pointed black goat horns on his head.

The moment the horns were revealed, a strange smile appeared on the little boy’s face.

He lowered his head slightly and began to chant in a language Han Su couldn’t understand, like an ancient and devout Spell.

The surrounding light seemed to dim.

The Spell merged into the air, burrowing into Han Su’s mind like a living thing. It suppressed his Spiritual Activity and tried to affect his Divine Material. Han Su didn’t resist, allowing the corruption to invade and then directing it into his briefcase.

“RUSTLE, RUSTLE…”

The illusory sound of the Emperor’s Book’s pages turning arose, easily overpowering the sound of the little boy’s chanting.

Immediately, lines of text crawled across Han Su’s vision:

[Clan Level Totem: Black Goat]

[Origin—North American Rhode Island Lovecraft Hill]

[This type of anomaly possesses the ability to influence the growth of flora. It is often worshipped as a god of harvest and fertility by remote tribes and villages plagued by famine. When its chewing sound manifests in reality, the local area will experience several years of bountiful harvests and prosperity.]

[Effects: Prolonged consumption of crops grown under its influence will cause one to mutate. The main symptoms are a drastic increase in libido, physical mutation, and the unrestrained growth of negative emotions, turning one into a devout follower of the Black Goat.]

[With sufficient worship and sacrifice from its followers, one among them will evolve into a true Black Goat!]

[…]

‘It sounds a bit like that group of Sea Beasts living in the waters around Qinggang,’ Han Su thought to himself, flexing his wrist. ‘Except this isn’t as developed as the Sea Beasts, which have already formed a clan…’

On the other side, the little boy continued to chant his Spell in a low voice. The “CRUNCH, CRUNCH” of chewing fodder grew clearer and louder. But when he saw that Han Su remained sitting there, perfectly composed, unease began to stir in his heart.

From start to finish, Han Su hadn’t done a thing, yet for the boy, it was already becoming unbearable.

Suddenly, he gave up the chant. If he were an adult, he probably would have felt fear and retreated at this point.

But a flash of viciousness and malice crossed his horizontal pupils instead.

All of a sudden, he lowered his head and charged straight at Han Su with his two still-tender horns.

“BANG!”

But he had only taken a single step when a loud gunshot rang out from behind Han Su.

A bullet flew straight out. The little boy was thrown backward, a bloody hole in his head. He lay stiffly on the ground as his horizontal pupils reverted to normal eyeballs, dilating bit by bit. His body twitched twice, then went still.

Han Su turned his head to see Akbar, dressed in black combat gear, climbing in through the window.

She slid the still-hot pistol into a holster at her side.

As she climbed into the room, she sneered, “You’ve been in the village this long, and not a single message sent out?”

“I was starting to think you’d been eaten by these sheep.”

“…”

“I was just about to send the intel.”

Han Su replied casually, turning his head to look at the little boy on the floor. His body was no longer twitching, and blood was pooling beneath his head.

“What? Feeling sorry for it?”

Akbar shot him a cold glance. “What do you think this job is? We’re here to slaughter the village.”

“Otherwise, I wouldn’t mind taking it home as a pet!”

By then, she had fully entered the room. Her cold gaze swept across the space and landed on the open ink bottle and the dip pen beside it. It seemed Han Su really had been about to write a report, which cooled her anger slightly.

“BANG! BANG! BANG!…”

But at that same moment, a fierce volley of gunfire suddenly erupted from all directions. Han Su was taken aback, not expecting the assault to begin so quickly.

Akbar said, “Your mission is canceled. The negotiations over there ended faster than we thought. The Independent Investigator from Giant Horn City and the steward from Skinning Manor came to blows right at the negotiating table. But both sides are being restrained; they’re not sending in troops.”

“So, the job falls to us.”

“I’ve arranged for the guys to storm in from the outside. You’re with me. We’re handling the most important task: find the Black Goat and hand it over to the Independent Investigator from Giant Horn City.”
