Chapter 259: The Castle Beyond the Sands
Chapter 259: Chapter 259: The Castle Beyond the Sands
Several hours had passed since the expedition began advancing deeper into the S-Rank Gate, and the landscape had gradually changed from an endless stretch of barren desert into a vast expanse of weathered stone formations and towering cliffs. The further they ventured, the heavier the atmosphere became, as though the dense mana permeating the surroundings was slowly gathering toward a single location.
Eventually, after crossing another stretch of rocky terrain, the expedition arrived before a colossal castle standing in the distance.
Its appearance was unlike anything they had encountered within the Gate thus far. Enormous white walls rose above the surrounding landscape, their surfaces resembling polished ivory weathered by countless centuries. Massive sandstone structures extended from the main fortress, blending seamlessly with the pale desert beneath them, while several towering spires pierced the sky like the fingers of some ancient monument. The outer walls stretched across the horizon, enclosing an area so vast that the castle seemed more like a fortified city than an ordinary stronghold.
Despite its magnificent appearance, there was something profoundly unsettling about the structure. No movement could be seen along its towering battlements, and the enormous entrance remained shrouded in darkness, yet an oppressive presence emanated from within, spreading across the surrounding desert like an invisible tide.
Ha-eun narrowed her eyes as she examined the fortress, her usually composed expression becoming noticeably more serious.
"Such a powerful presence..." she murmured, her gaze fixed on the castle. "Even from this distance, I can feel the mana radiating from within. Whatever awaits us inside, it certainly isn’t an ordinary dungeon boss."
Kang Ji-hoon stood beside her, his sharp gaze moving across the enormous walls as he silently assessed the situation. Although he had participated in numerous dangerous dungeon expeditions throughout his career, the pressure coming from the castle was unlike anything he had experienced before.
"Indeed. I’ve never encountered anything quite like this, either," he replied, his expression grave. "It seems the boss of an S-Rank Gate is on an entirely different level, even compared to the creatures we’ve encountered so far. We should exercise caution rather than assume that our previous victories guarantee an easy battle."
Park Tae-hyun crossed his arms, studying the castle with a mixture of anticipation and impatience. Having spent most of the expedition at the forefront of the fighting, the muscular guild master appeared more eager than intimidated by the imposing fortress.
"The second expedition team should arrive soon," he said. "Let’s wait here until they catch up with us. There’s no point in rushing into an unfamiliar stronghold when we can consolidate our forces and prepare properly."
Neither Kang Ji-hoon nor Ha-eun objected to the suggestion. With the castle occupying such a vast area, advancing without adequate information would be an unnecessary risk, especially when they had yet to determine the exact nature of the dungeon boss.
Kang Ji-hoon then turned toward Ares, who had been standing slightly apart from the others, his expression as tranquil as ever.
"Mr. Tae-ho, if there’s anything you require before we proceed, please don’t hesitate to let us know. We would be happy to make the necessary arrangements."
Ares regarded him with a faint smile.
"Thank you for your consideration, Mr. Kang. I appreciate the offer, but I have everything I need. Please don’t concern yourself with me."
"Very well. Nevertheless, don’t hesitate to ask if anything changes."
Their conversation ended there, and the expedition settled into a brief period of rest while several scouts were dispatched to observe the castle’s surroundings. Some Awakeners took the opportunity to replenish their supplies, while others discussed the possible dangers awaiting them beyond the fortress walls.
It was not long before a commotion arose from the direction they had come.
"Reinforcements have arrived!"
The announcement drew the attention of the nearby Awakeners, many of whom turned toward the distant figures approaching across the desert. Dozens of Awakeners were advancing toward the main expedition, their equipment bearing the insignias of several prominent guilds. At the forefront of the group walked three individuals whose presence immediately distinguished them from the others.
The first was a tall, handsome man with slightly messy silver-black hair, sharp eyes, and a confident smile that suggested he was accustomed to receiving attention wherever he went. His stylish attire stood out among the practical combat equipment worn by the other Awakeners, giving him the appearance of someone who could attend a formal gathering as effortlessly as he could enter a dangerous dungeon.
Walking beside him was a slender woman with long black hair tied into a high ponytail. Her narrow eyes and cold expression gave little away, while her measured steps and composed bearing suggested that she was accustomed to maintaining control of whatever situation she found herself in.
The third individual was an elegant woman with long, dark-blue hair and calm blue eyes. Her refined features were complemented by a pristine white-and-navy uniform that gave her a distinguished appearance, and unlike the other two, she carried herself with a certain effortless grace that made her seem approachable despite her formidable status.
The trio approached the waiting guild masters, exchanging greetings with the people they recognized.
"Looks like you’ve all been busy," the silver-black-haired man remarked with a confident grin as he looked around the expedition’s temporary staging area. "I was beginning to wonder whether you had decided to clear the entire Gate without waiting for us."
Park Tae-hyun let out a hearty laugh.
"If only it were that simple. We’ve made decent progress, but the deeper we go, the more unusual the environment becomes. Fortunately, things have been going well so far."
"That’s reassuring to hear," the man replied, before turning his attention toward the enormous white-and-sand-colored fortress looming in the distance. His smile gradually faded into an expression of interest as he felt the tremendous mana radiating from the structure. "I take it that enormous castle is our next destination?"
"That’s right," Kang Ji-hoon answered. "Based on the presence we’ve detected, the dungeon boss is almost certainly inside. We haven’t entered yet, so we still need to investigate its interior and determine what kind of monsters we’re dealing with."
One of the newly arrived Awakeners glanced toward the fortress, visibly unsettled by the oppressive aura that seemed to hang over it.
"If the boss is hiding in there, then we’re probably in for a serious fight," he remarked. "I can feel its presence even from here, and it doesn’t feel like anything I’ve encountered before."
"Which is precisely why we’re waiting for everyone to assemble before making our next move," Park Tae-hyun replied.
He then appeared to remember something and turned toward Ares, who had remained quietly beside the other guild masters throughout the exchange.
"Before we go any further, allow me to introduce someone to you."
The silver-black-haired man raised an eyebrow.
"Oh? Someone worth introducing personally, I assume?"
"Naturally. Tae-ho, come over here for a moment."
Ares approached without any apparent reluctance, meeting the man’s curious gaze with his usual composed expression.
The man looked between Park Tae-hyun and Ares, his confident smile returning as he waited for an explanation.
"And who might this gentleman be?"
Park Tae-hyun placed a hand on Ares’s shoulder in a familiar gesture before beginning the introductions.
"This is Lee Min-Jae, he’s an S-Rank Awakener and the guild master of Black Out Guild."
He then gestured toward the woman standing beside Min-jae.
"This is Moon Ji-hye, the vice guild master of his guild. She’s an A-Rank Awakener and one of the most reliable combatants you’ll find in their ranks."
Finally, he turned toward the elegant woman with dark-blue hair.
"And this is Choi Soo-jin. She’s an S-Rank Awakener in her own right and the guild master of Guardian Guild, as well as the strongest healer in South Korea. If there’s anyone you want keeping you alive when a battle turns ugly, she’s the person you should be grateful to have on your side."
Meanwhile, Lee Min-jae had been staring at Park Tae-hyun with an increasingly suspicious expression.
"Hold on a second. Why are you making such a big deal out of introducing him to us? You’ve introduced plenty of Awakeners before, but I’ve never seen you go out of your way to do something like this."
Park Tae-hyun grinned.
"Because this one’s different."
"Different how?"
"This is Yoon Tae-ho, a newly registered S-Rank Awakener."
For a brief moment, the surrounding conversation seemed to fade into silence.
Lee Min-jae’s confident smile faltered, and his eyes widened as he looked at Ares again, this time with considerably more scrutiny. Moon Ji-hye’s cold expression changed only slightly, but even she seemed surprised by the revelation, her narrow eyes lingering on the young man before her.
Choi Soo-jin, on the other hand, reacted as though someone had just presented her with the most extraordinary gift imaginable.
"An S-Rank?!"
Her voice rose sharply enough to draw the attention of several nearby Awakeners.
"Wait, seriously? You’re an S-Rank Awakener? Oh my goodness, that’s fantastic! Another one! Do you have any idea how rare that is? And you’re not affiliated with a guild yet, are you? Please tell me you aren’t, because if you aren’t, then we absolutely need to talk!"
Lee Min-jae recovered from his initial surprise and turned toward Park Tae-hyun.
"You’re telling me this guy is an S-Rank Awakener, and you somehow managed to keep him under wraps until now?"
"Don’t make it sound as though I’ve been hiding him in my basement," Park Tae-hyun replied with a laugh. "He only recently completed his registration. Naturally, it takes time for news like that to spread."
He then draped an arm around Ares’s shoulders with the familiarity of someone who had already decided they were close.
"Besides, Tae-ho and I are going to become close friends from now on. We’re practically sworn brothers already!"
Ares turned his head slightly to look at the muscular guild master.
’Sworn brothers? We have exchanged a few conversations and fought in the same expedition, yet he has already decided that we’re practically family.’
He maintained his polite smile, choosing not to comment on Park Tae-hyun’s rather enthusiastic declaration.
Lee Min-jae stared at his friend as though he had just announced something utterly incomprehensible.
"What? Since when did you become so friendly with people you barely know?"
"Since I met someone worth being friendly with, obviously!" Park Tae-hyun replied without the slightest hesitation. "What’s wrong with that? A man should recognize a good friend when he meets one!"
"That’s not what I meant, you muscle-brained idiot!"
"Then what did you mean?"
"Forget it!"
Before the two could continue their argument, Lee Min-jae turned his attention toward Ares, his earlier surprise giving way to the familiar confidence of someone accustomed to recruiting talented individuals.
"Anyway, Mr. Yoon, since you haven’t joined a guild yet, why don’t you consider joining mine? We have excellent facilities, generous compensation, access to high-ranking dungeons, and plenty of opportunities for you to develop your abilities. With your potential, I’m certain we could offer you an arrangement that would be difficult to refuse."
Moon Ji-hye glanced at her guild master before adding her own words in a cool, measured voice.
"Our guild also provides comprehensive support for its members, including dedicated training facilities, specialized equipment, and access to experienced instructors. If you’re concerned about maintaining your independence, we can discuss a contract that allows you considerable freedom while still granting you the benefits of membership."
Her proposal was considerably more restrained than Min-jae’s, but the sincerity behind it was unmistakable.
Choi Soo-jin immediately raised her hand.
"Wait, wait, wait! You two can’t just start recruiting him without giving me a chance!"
She stepped closer to Ares, her blue eyes sparkling with enthusiasm.
"Mr. Yoon, what if you joined my guild instead? We have the best medical facilities in the country, an entire team of dedicated healers, and absolutely wonderful working conditions! I’ll personally make sure you receive the finest treatment whenever you’re injured, and if you ever need someone to take care of you, you can always come straight to me!"
She paused, then leaned forward slightly, lowering her voice into a playful, almost seductive tone.
"And if that’s still not enough to convince you, I’m perfectly willing to offer you something a little more personal. How about becoming my future husband? I promise I’ll be a very devoted wife!"
