Seated on the weathered log overlooking the rugged valley, Zevryn watched the initial fortification grid take shape around the cave entrance. Below, the captain of the guard was directing the placement of iron-reinforced barricades while the city's engineers drove deep anchor-spikes into the stone.

Suddenly, a faint, sub-audible chime hummed against his right hand. The dark iron ring etched with combat-resonance runes flickered with a wisp of grey smoke.

A heartbeat later, Vax materialized in a silent blur at the edge of the tree line, its stony wings folding inward as it knelt before Zevryn.

"Master," Vax hissed softly, its amber eyes glowing with urgency. "A column of thirty armed men is marching up the western pass. They bear Sundergard colors and are moving fast toward the mine."

Zevryn’s pale eyes narrowed. He stood up from the log, his coat snapping in the mountain wind, and walked down the slope to where the innkeeper and the guard captain were overseeing the supplies.

"We have company," Zevryn stated flatly. "Thirty armed men from Sundergard are less than ten minutes out, riding up the pass to check on their operation."

The innkeeper's single eye flashed with cold calculation. "Let them come. We'll give them a proper Vandermir welcome."

Moments later, the heavy boots of the Sundergard detachment crunched against the gravel as they crested the ridge, weapons drawn and ready to demand answers from their illicit diggers. But instead of a quiet, hidden cave, they ran straight into a wall of fully deployed municipal enforcers and raised steel.

The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

At the front of the Sundergard column, a scarred garrison lieutenant halted abruptly, his face pale as he took in the Vandermir banner flying above the newly erected barricade.

The innkeeper stepped forward from the shadows of the blockade, his arms crossed over his leather cuirass, projecting the heavy authority of the city council's fifth seat.

"Going somewhere, officer?" the innkeeper called out, his voice cutting cleanly across the cold air.

The Sundergard lieutenant swallowed hard, forcing a hostile glare. "This land is unclaimed frontier! What business does Port Vandermir have here, deploying troops and making mining operations outside your traditional boundary?"

The innkeeper let out a dry, chilling laugh. "Unclaimed? This bedrock has belonged to Vandermir for centuries. The real question is: what interest does Sundergard have operating a clandestine excavation miles outside your own borders?"

Trapped by their own illegal sabotage and facing an overwhelming defensive line with no element of surprise left, the Sundergard lieutenant clenched his jaw. Realizing they were heavily outnumbered and outmaneuvered, he spat on the ground, barked a sharp order, and motioned for his thirty men to fall back down the trail.

As the hostile scouts retreated into the distance, Zevryn stepped out beside the innkeeper, his gaze fixed on the empty ridge.

"They'll be back with a much larger force," Zevryn said quietly. "This is going to be war."

The innkeeper turned to the drow, his expression grim and absolute. "Agreed. Sundergard won't let go of a black mithril vein without a siege."

Without wasting a second, the innkeeper summoned a courier runner, dispatching an urgent, high-priority message back to Port Vandermir. If Sundergard wanted a war over the seams, Vandermir would drown them in steel.

By afternoon, the mountain road trembled under the thunderous march of reinforcements. Streaming up the pass came an unstoppable wave of military might: one hundred battle-hardened city soldiers, one hundred heavily armed mercenaries ready for contract work, twenty elite council battle-mages crackling with raw arcane energy, and an extended train of miners carrying heavy extraction gear to strip the mountain bare.

The outpost was no longer just a secured mine. It was a fortress.
