The Drifting Blade of the Moon [Grimdark][Dark Fantasy][Sword and Sorcery]
Chapter 56: The Fifth Seat and the Price of War
The heavy timber doors of the Salty Kraken groaned shut behind Zevryn as he stepped out of the midnight fog and into the stale warmth of the taproom. Bypassing the main counter, he slipped straight into the familiar back booth where the innkeeper was nursing a mug of dark ale.
Without sitting down just yet, Zevryn fixed his pale, unblinking eyes on the single-eyed broker.
"I have a direct question for you," Zevryn said, his voice dropping to a low, quiet hum. "Are you part of the city council? The fifth seat, representing the underworld?"
The innkeeper froze mid-motion, his mug hovering inches from the scarred wood. For a long, tense moment, the ambient noise of the taproom seemed to vanish entirely. He stared hard at the drow, realizing there was no point in denying it. The dark elf was simply too cunning, too sharp to be lied to.
A slow, dry exhale escaped the innkeeper's lips, followed by a faint, reluctant nod. "You never miss a beat, do you? Yes. I hold the fifth seat."
"Good," Zevryn replied smoothly, finally sliding into the seat opposite him.
He reached into his coat and pulled out a jagged, obsidian-dark chunk of raw mineral, placing it softly on the table. The dim amber candlelight caught a dull, wicked shimmer across its surface.
"Black mithril," the innkeeper murmured, his eye widening instantly at the sight of the war-metal.
Zevryn tapped the dark chunk of ore, his expression cold and sharp. "Tell the council to move fast. Another city is bleeding our territory dry."
The innkeeper's tactical mind raced instantly, leaning forward over the scarred wood. "You have intelligence on an active extraction operation?"

"Precisely," Zevryn said. "I want to sell this information directly to the city council. How much will they buy it for?"
"A more than modest amount," the innkeeper answered, weighing the political and state security value. "The council would pay handsomely to secure state sovereignty over an active black mithril source."
"Add two percent to the baseline payout, and it's a deal," Zevryn countered.
The innkeeper raised a skeptical eyebrow. "If you want long-term returns, why not take a percentage share of the extraction rights?"
Zevryn shook his head with a flat look of disdain. "Too much time spent looking at ledgers and dealing with administrative headaches. I have no time for that. Just give me the cash payout plus the two percent."
The innkeeper stared at him for a second, then a grin broke across his scarred face. "Done. It's a deal. Now, where is the source?"
Zevryn leaned back, his pale eyes locking onto the broker. "I found a vein of it beyond the western foothills, tucked inside a hidden mining shaft operated secretly by Sundergard, a bronze-grade rival city carving straight through our bedrock within Vandermir's borders."
The moment the full geopolitical weight of the sabotage registered, the innkeeper's face darkened into an absolute, chilling mask of rage. Sundergard encroaching on Vandermir's borders wasn't just a localized dispute. This meant war.
The broker stood up abruptly, leaning across the table. "Listen to me, Zevryn. Please wait for me at your estate in an hour. Can we mobilize today? We need you to guide the strike force straight to the hidden shaft."
"Agreed," Zevryn said, standing up and adjusting his cloak. "Do not keep me waiting."
Back at the safehouse, the heavy iron gate clicked shut behind him. When Zevryn stepped into the main quarters, Xel was already waiting quietly, having anticipated his master's return. In the adjoining chamber, a steaming, fragrant bath laced with soothing recovery herbs had been prepared.
Zevryn unbuckled his tactical harness, letting the heavy gear fall away as he stepped into the warm water.
He sank back against the stone edge, letting out a long, quiet breath. I haven't even finished absorbing the last influx of gold, and yet another colossal fortune is rolling in. A faint, weary smile touched his lips at the sheer irony of it all. Wealth followed him like a shadow, built entirely on blood, strategy, and the impending collapse of his enemies.
The council was about to march, Sundergard was walking into a massacre, and Zevryn's empire was growing heavier by the day.
